  • A northbound Canadian National freight train heads up CN's Waukesha Subdivision at Honey Creek Road, north of Honey Creek, WI. The 78.7 defect detector gives a read out after the train passes.
    ***I keep getting the same question, asking what's up with the bell at this crossing. At the time I filmed this, they were in the process of installing new crossing signals and detection equipment. You can see a little bit of the gate mechanism of the new signal in the upper right hand corner of the screen and the other new mast and gate mech on the other side of the crossing. The Safetran bell had been disconnected by this point. The GS bell you're hearing is on top of the new signal, on my side of the tracks, out of the camera's view.

This video will always be legendary, with the older CN locomotive, the older gateless signals with the disconnected Safetran Type 1, the old Wisconsin Central defect detector and even the signals shutting off with the train still in the crossing! Even though this was filmed and uploaded long ago, great video and catch!

    Love it when that first headlight appears over the rise, right at the beginning! I can hear Richard Strauss's "Night and Sunrise" from the Alpine Symphony in my mind's ear.
    I'm glad you didn't sweep the camera around to follow the locomotive. Lots of railfans do, and then they stay pointed along the tracks, getting an angle to the tracks similar to yours, except now shooting the train moving away from the camera. I like a stationary camera-keep it simple.
    Great video! Thanks for uploading!

    The grandmaster of all railroad videos! This even made me start filming trains on my channel. Do you remember if there was ever a Mechanical Bell here? And they could have added separate gates and saved a ton of money.

    • @Brenton81
      @Brenton81  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, there was a mechanical bell and 8" lights there at one time. They couldn't just add gates to the crossing. They had to install new detection equipment and electronics with the gated signals.

    • @k.b.5079
      @k.b.5079 5 лет назад

      Brenton81 interesting. Also, I never realized how rare Safetran Type 1 E-Bells are, especially since I never seen one. Maybe they could’ve reused it?

    • @Brenton81
      @Brenton81  5 лет назад

      Possibly. They may have saved the light assemblies and bell, if it still worked. Masts and crossbucks more that likely ended up in the scrap heap.

    well for anyone really from the western racine county wi area , this was a popular spot to hang out and watch wi. central traffic and this was the hardest regency radio to hear without a professional radio. the crossing was already in the process of getting new gates installed. this is also a dispatcher radio location 161.295(79).as a csx employee now we have talked about this video because of the warning light terminated too soon. maintainers fear these issues. great video brenton81.

    The engineer doesn't control the crossing signals. There are no buttons or anything that are pressed to activate / deactivate them. They're triggered by the metal wheels of the train passing over a stretch of track wired to the crossing signal control system. The railroad was in the process of installing new signals at the time this was taken, so it's simply a glitch in the track circuit. The new signals are now up and the problem has been corrected.

    Lead unit is a CN SD50F (5430, I believe). Second unit is a WC 6900-series SD40-3 (looks like either 6901 or 6911). Neither unit is still on the CN roster. The SD50F's were sold out of CN's (ex-IC) Woodcrest shops in Homewood, IL (Markham Yard) several years ago through a locomotive auction. The 6900's were also sold, many of them acquired by Québec Gatineau Railway/QGRY. I work for St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad/SLR, one of QGRY's sister roads at Genesee & Wyoming Canada, so this is why we now have the QGRY 6904.

    Years ago when we were kids we knew when the train was coming thru town, we'd run out to meet it at the crossing and stand just feet away from the tracks and do the "honk at us" arm pull. They would always blare the horn more than they usually did for us. Feel the power rushing by, the noise, the ground shakes, quite exhillerating! :) Good times. Miss it!

      Both videos are great. These videos also inspired children to like and film trains.

    Glad they updated these signals with crossing arms since this video shows the lights and bells going off prematurely with the last car of the train still crossing on the road! Yikes!!!! Never had seen that before. Sure would love to see this same area in the winter with snow on the ground and a train passing by. Must be pretty. Thanks for posting since I enjoy your videos just about every night. Nice camera work!

    This was so interesting, especially the defect detector. I love standing near the tracks in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada when I visit. I love trains, the engines design-wise are quite beautiful. Great Video!!!! 5 stars!!!

      This was the second train video for me. The first video I watched was the one where a train gets hit by a tornado. I saw this video in the list of videos beside it so I decided to click on it. I've been watching train videos on RUclips ever since.
