    I heard on the radio a young woman from New Zealand who said, the day after the attack, that she didn't feel safe wearing her head scarf, and that she's never felt that way before. That really broke my heart.

    This whole situation hurts my heart.
    What sickens me more is that through the aftermath of this terrible, terrible tragedy, I've discovered people in my social media circles that have been fully supportive of this massacre (and of Fraser Anning) even going so far as saying that the entire incident is fake and made up.
    How do you respond to that..?? I want to be able to debate them, but after a couple of days of failed attempts, I've had to 'unfriend' them because: 1. it seemed to fuel their desire to dive deeper into the internet to find "news articles" and videos that supported their views to share with their friends, and 2. I was getting far too angry to even attempt a continuance of civil conversations.
    I want to help. I want to stand up and fight for what I feel is right. I want to be able to stand with those that are hurting. I want to be able to hold my head high and call out racism when I see it occurring, even if it's only in a social media post in my own small circle of the world.
    But I don't know how anymore. And that just breaks my heart.

    • @skipindarskipindar8308
      @skipindarskipindar8308 5 лет назад +20

      I too, have had to defriend people who I've discovered are racists. You are doing the right thing by rejecting racism among your circle. It might seem small but an ocean is made up of drops of water.

    • @AuntieWelly
      @AuntieWelly 5 лет назад +9

      I was forced to create a second social media account as too many people in my unavoidable work circle hold varying degrees of sickening views, not just on immigration issues but all kinds of things. I had a crisis in my own life that brought the issue to a head - I had no resources to keep arguing or deciding which to argue and which to let go, so I created a safe space for myself and only allow genuine friends in. I brace myself when I log in to work. Thankfully I don't need to do that often as the phone alerts me of any messages and the rest I can do from my safe account, but even so, it's really tough sometimes. Plus, I don't want my friends from all over the world to be subjected to the hate that passes for humour from these toxic people. They are everywhere infecting decent but gullible people. The biggest irony is Remembrance for World War II and "lest we forget" and that sickens me to the core ... if we learn nothing then remembering is futile, and I see daily from these same people that nothing has been learned.

    • @jonnylumberjack6223
      @jonnylumberjack6223 5 лет назад +12

      You can't help. There is a psychological reason for people believing in conspiracy theories and it can't be undone by a rational conversation with an online pal. And the racism is fear based - stupid, uneducated, terrified little people who blame others for their own failings, because that is easier than face their own shortcomings. I had to come off social media altogether (except on here, obv!) because the attitude of millions of people depresses the hell out of me. I literally ceased to be able to cope with the amount of hatred out there.

      The best way to help is focus your attention on those who are hurting and mourning. And as Adam has said before look to the heroes and help them. Contribute time, money or positive attention towards supportive charities. Channel the same effort as your ex contacts into searching the net for information on the mosque that was attacked and share the stories of the people who prayed in peace while this was happening. Those who hate want the world to validate them with attention. Invalidate them by overshadowing them with the positive and the loving. I have something to get you started. Jacinda Ardern has had a lot of great publicity here in Australia, we all want to steal her as our pri minister. She has shown strength and compassion and put herself amongst the people as a true leader should. So sorry that Anning is getting so much publicity world wide, he is a very sorry excuse for a human. Also pleased you have not mentioned the name of the shooter, he needs to stay anonymous so he cannot become a hero. Pity Australia does not do the same.

    The way this video is being passed around is the equivalent of the media scandal surrounding the Black Dahlia.
    Innocent people have been killed, and instead of respecting their deaths, we are supporting the hype and worse the killer's ego.

    Let his ego starve, just as people should have let the paparazzi starve back when Elizabeth Short was killed.
    Don't feed their greed and hate.

    • @FishMr3
      @FishMr3 5 лет назад +5

      Martyre20 there is an interesting side to this argument which I hadn't considered before yesterday. When the orlando club shooting happened, right wing pundits like Ben Shapiro, Lauren Southern etc were quick and happy to denounce Islam and name the terrorist. Now that a far right white nationalist has shot up a mosque, they fall back on the standard arguments of "don't share his name. Don't share his manifesto. *don't let people know that his ideology is what we people represent*"
      So I say no. DO share his name. Shame how much of a shit stain he is. Shame his ideology. Make people KNOW that it isn't okay to have these views, that this is what it leads to. Let people know that this is what the far right stands for, explicitly or not. Let people know that the far right stwnds for the murder of innocent people.

      @@FishMr3 There's that, true enough. From what I learnt of media though, there's never a shortage of paparazzi or rubberneckers willing to pass over moral lines in order to have their slice of the pie.
      If showing the video helps detail why horrible people like this are wrong, then I think it's a good cause.
      However, this is not new, and past the issue that concerns the abhorrent treatment of these victims, I don't want this shite to have any more attention than a footnote. Let them be forgotten, but let the injustice be remembered.

      If I was the only source, I'd agree. Maybe. However, if those opposed to this evil act do not comment, do not cover it, do not speak of it... then the narrative will be entirely made up of those who sensationalise or promote such acts.
      There needs to be a counter. There needs to be a voice of rationalism, and of reason. Of compassion for the lost and condemnation not just of the terrorist act, but of the conflict that spawned it.
      I'm an Atheist, and further I'm an Antitheist. I have a very low opinion of Islam and almost all of the world religions, too. They're is no justification for murder. Not muslims, not anyone. Everyone has the right to be wrong. My ideology, My culture, are not so weak that they cannot withstand the presence of different views. They are not so fragile that they cannot exist without silencing or supressing other positions. This terrorist was weak, and fearful. A coward. Those that praise his actions, or attempt to frame them in a less despicable light, are cowards. They have given into fear and xenophobia. Their worldviews, their cultures, are weak and cannot stand. That is why they must try to stoke division and the tyranny of prejudice.
      Humans should not kill Humans. We have far too much in common to kill each other over our differences.

    Yes, it is worth remembering that these things are rare, but I'd actually argue it's not okay to feel worried or upset. By definition, terrorists of any kind thrive on creating terror, and the best way to end their illusion of having any impact on the world is to not be terrified. Unless you have personally lost loved ones in an attack like this, it should be easy enough to suppress whatever emotions you have about it, and just carry on as if nothing happened, because that is the only way to make these people stop making political points over the dead bodies of innocents.

      Yoda Man - ‘people are the problem’ is a meaningless platitude that does nothing to address societal problems. Limiting problematic people’s access to weaponry is a reasonable response to the misuse of those items. Knife sales and carry is restricted in Australia too, and while there may have been a moderate increase in knife crime in the decades since gun ownership was restricted, the overall homicide rate is down.
      It’s undeniable that knifes are less deadly than guns. You can never legislate away all weaponry, every day life brings with it dangers and threats. No one is denying that. However it IS reasonable to restrict people’s access to inordinately powerful weaponry they have no logical use for. By your logic we should allow the average citizen to own military vehicles, explosives etc because at the end of the day, tanks don’t kill people, people do.

    I have never shared a meme that Islam is violent, but I accept that Muhammed waged war, killed his enemies to a man, enslaved their children and concubined their women. This is all documented in the Koran. So what exactly am I "not helping"? Avoiding the truth? It is okay to criticise a philosophy, all ideas are up for debate. That the philosophy is held by a vulnerable minority does not give it a free pass. That such criticism might be appropriated by the hateful is unfortunate. Does Hitler's vegetarianism discredit veganism by association? Ideas and criticism have merit independent of who is saying them.
    I am saddened by the appalling murders in Christchurch. I'm sure most Muslims' relationship with their religion is just as unexamined as most Christians. Those that do closely investigate their beliefs often reject the absurdity of super beings, or double down on that belief leading to intolerance and violence. I know I'm "not helping" by saying this, but Truth is more important to me than comforting platitudes.
