    Thanks for the comparision. I'm strongly considering the Surface Studio for my daughter, who is an artist and is graduating high school this year. I did watch your standalone review of the new Surface laptop as she is concerned about pen performance after you mentioned the rather poor pen performance on your Acer ConceptD review, which she was interested in prior to seeing your review. I also believe she has started watching your drawing videos as well so keep up the great content!

      The best, affordable and overall experience I could recommend is the Surface laptop. It is a full computer and combined with the new surface pen she will be fine. Buying a macbook pro and and ipad plus pencil will be expensive and cumbersome for a student. Plus she will need just the right application for her art, not a tons of apps and from my experience Concepts on windows is very good plus it is a vector drawing application that she might combine with others like adobe.

    • @pixelpusher1393

      @@AmandasRoseBud Yup, and that´s my main gripe with Apple. They don´t want to cannibalize sales between iPad pro and MacBook Pro, so they keep both worlds artificially separate. Apple could probably boot the iPad pro up with a regular MacOS, w/o any technical modification. Just imagine a MacBook Pro with a gorgeous 14 or 16" display, or a 27" iMac which is pen and touch enabled....
      Ironically, Microsoft seems to be doing more for the creative professional right now. For Photoshop, the CPU and GPU power of the Surface lineup is perfectly sufficient. For video and 3D animation, the MacBook Pro M1 are a godsend. The one letdown with everything Surface is the miserable battery life, though, even in it´s newest iteration. And there´s a caveat: It still remains to be seen how close to Wacom EMR and/or Apple Pencil Microsoft has actually come with the new Slim Pen 2. While very much improved, there´s still some wobble visible in certain situations.
      Finally: I´m really curious if Microsoft will get out a 3rd generation Surface Studio together with the new Slim Pen 2.

    It's especially tricky to switch from macOS to Windows as the ecosystem within the apple devices is just so good.
    On the other hand, while being a mac guy (waiting for an M1 max 16" to be shipped), I used windows too all my life (started with Windows 95) and damn if I'd love to get a Surface Studio Laptop too, if I had unlimited money.

      My first device of my own was an original iPad Air (2013), wich I use to this day.
      My smartphones were all Android though.
      And for the first PC I got myself a few years ago, I chose another windows machine. (Asus Zenbook)
      However, if I would need to make the same decision again today, I'd 100% get a MacBook Air.
      (I didn't a few years ago bc the Macbooks at that time were either really shitty in comparison to the competition (Air), too expensive (Pro) or had terrible connectivity (seriously, ONE USB-C port on the standard model?)

Long story short: using a Surface Pro 2017 (my first Windows PC) and a Surface Studio 2 now... Some of my customers switched too as being able to have a decent but cheap PC Workstation (which acts as a fileserver too) and a mobile solution isn't any option with Apple. I’ve never wanted Apple to get more creative with their designs as I do now. Now that they have the unbelievably powerful M1chips in their devices, if they started creating surface like devices with more to offer, the surface line would be dead and over. The only way Microsoft if winning anymore is because of their 2-in-1 offerings, and many people will sacrifice power, battery life and sustainability just for that creative touch to the device. With the stability, power and battery of the new macs, they would be unrivaled with the surface features.

    Surface Laptop Studio has worked best for me, since I’ve mostly worked in the windows ecosystem, and I have used an iPad with an iMac in an office setting extensively, and being tethered in a cumbersome/inelegant way between a device and a portable drawing display vs the sheer convenience of having it all in one system/one cable makes it a no brainer.
    There is a huge missed opportunity in not having a pencil/touch enabled MacBook in some sort of 2 in 1 form factor, as even though MacOS is not my preferred OS at this time, I would have probably waited for that hypothetical device (if I thought they would ever do it) as opposed to jumping on the SLS.
    That being said, ironic that windows followed the nerfed MacBook port selection only for apple to immediately increase their port selection to something pros actually want.
    But yeah, my current setup is the i7/32gb SLS, with a Huion tablet stand to angle it up slightly in tablet mode for ergonomics, and a tourbox neo for hot keys.
    Also, there is a series of dongles and hubs to connect other peripherals if I need them. (I never said it was the perfect setup lol, but so far it has been the best for my purposes with fewer compromises, having worked professionally in the past with Wacom displays, iMac/iPad combos with astropad, as well as non display tablets from Wacom and the Surface Pro 5)

    • @AnalogKensho
      @AnalogKensho 2 года назад

      I am very curious to hear why the SLS feels less compromising to you than a desktop/laptop hooked up to a Wacom display - is it just the freedom that comes from not being tethered in place by the Wacom?
      It would seem to me that desktop + Cintiq would be the ultimate no-compromises solution, whereas an all-in-one like the SLS would compromise screen real estate for some degree of mobility and somewhat reduced price. Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts on it as someone who’s used both.

    • @gormauslander
      @gormauslander 2 года назад

      @@AnalogKensho This is the great issue for me right now. It would be far more affordable to get a similarly specced desktop and auxiliary drawing tablet than the SLS. Is it worth paying an extra $1,000+ for portability?

    • @zephyr6913
      @zephyr6913 2 года назад +1

      @@AnalogKensho Being able to take a full featured workstation anywhere without any additional cables is primarily what I need right now, and these days I find Wacom to be way overpriced and in the past their QC has been pretty crappy. I’d much rather spend less for “good enough”, and honestly Wacom’s mobile devices are just way too overpriced and old hardware, and they are only recently responding to the market competition.
      Basically my preference is having a solid mobile all in one, that can handle sketching and full paintings, then at some point replacing my current Cintiq (a 10 year old Wacom that right now is having a weird power fault that I might need to open it up to get it working again) with probably the 24” 4k Huion. Basically I spent twice that for something that I can use everywhere and use exclusively for now, and save the desktop upgrade for later, and probably at some point see if I can get the Cintiq working again.
      But yeah my workflow really needs versatility over anything, and the SLS has a high enough resolution screen to be perfectly suitable for digital illustration. Before this I used a surface pro 5, which did pretty well but was anemic in its performance, and made it purely just a device for drafting, until it slowed down enough that it wasn’t even great for that, since Photoshop likes to get more and more bloated. SLS is a champ, I’ve purposely overburdened it and it still kept up (although it was pumping out a lot of heat and needed to be plugged in).
      My ideal config would be the form factor and drawing surface of the SLS with the new MacBook Pro Mac chips.

    • @zephyr6913
      @zephyr6913 2 года назад

      @@gormauslander that’s entirely personal preference. If you like taking your work around the house, like in front of the tv on your couch, or outside, then versatility makes more sense. It’s definitely not the best bang for your buck, but you can’t really toss a pen display in your backpack.

    • @AnalogKensho
      @AnalogKensho 2 года назад +1

      @@zephyr6913 thanks for taking the the time to explain, that is very informative! You make a lot of excellent points, and as you point out the simplicity of an all-in-one solution is very tempting. Being a hobbyist, my art needs allow me to do much the same as you describe with an iPad Pro - and I’d probably be content to just keep using the iPad for some time, but there is some home recording gear I’d like to get that is just going to be so much easier to use with full Mac or windows PC.
      I haven’t used Wacom myself in many years, but I always sort of kept them in the back of my mind as the “gold standard” that I would eventually upgrade to if necessary. Unfortunately, as you point out it does seem like they’ve had a string of engineering and software misses in recent years. I hope that all the competition pushes them to do better, but I have this nagging fear that there may be limitations to what they can accomplish due to their size and the volume of devices they are able to sell.

Never looked back. But: there are some huge stones on the way of switching: E-Mail, Calendar and Contacts. The UWP apps are best described as advertisement for 365. But even more worse: CardDAV Contact groups are handled different. And Windows drag&drop - just don't use it as a Mac user... There are some online issues including QC so worth watching. This is not even released in Europe until next year (sometime), probably as we are not so keen to pay the MS premium and by then far better devices with the 12th gen will be incoming. So for me it is not of any interest especially at its steep price which is almost ridiculous and truly for the rich or MS fandom and affiliates!

It is there to pave the way for future generation that house Face ID... currently it serves no other purpose but to look like an iOS device. The bezel is "thick" enough to hold a vastly better camera module if they wanted to, just take a look at current Xperia devices that have top and bottom bezels of around 4mm and those devices have an 8MP camera (it doesn't win any awards, but it is way better than those 1080p found in the Mac).

Not going to be as slick or as easy as just picking up my SLS, sitting down, pulling the pen out from under the lip, and just working immediately, then instantly switching to browsing or whatever else I want to do, storing the pen very securely on the device at a whim.
      That being said, the SLS is basically half of my setup, as I wanted to have a full fledged compact mobile drawing setup, and eventually will reinvest in my desktop setup with a full scale (>20”) drawing tablet. However, my point is that, now apps on iPad are being upgraded to sub-desktop levels… in fact, many apps like procreate and affinity suite are already there. Adobe is still trying to figure it out, but.. Apple allows you to connect your iPad to your MacBook with sidecar, and in a future software update of MacOS Monterey, you’ll get Universal Control. So, you can make your iPad a better external display… And not only that, you said scrolling through videos on Adobe Premiere Pro is kind of choppy, And although, you did admit this is because of premiere, I believe It’s mainly because Premiere is running through Rosetta 2. I think using FCPX for the time-being will fix this issue out for you…

    But, I think Microsoft are being far more innovative here. If it wasn't for my iOS-only dev work, I could certainly see myself with a Surface Studio.
    The real problem is that although Apple hold all the ace cards with chip performance now, their designs have stagnated. Their refusal to allow any form of touch on Macs has really hindered progress.
    We shouldn't need a highly expensive iPad AND a Macbook Pro to be able to use Procreate and development on the same machine.

      I think we have a diversion in roadmaps, Apple with their non-compromise device per segment which has proved very successful and only a fool would change a winning business model. Apple do not have to take risks or jump on every new gimmick, they are already killing it, whereas MS has failed miserably at smartphones, tablets and hybrids to an extent. It has come to the point the failure of MS that they are finally accepting Android was the way for mobile despite saying the opposite for over a decade! You say innovative, I say desperate, desperate to get some of the market they have missed out on because they did not want to see that Apple had the right ideas and they were way off course. Samsung copied Apple quickly and they are now bigger than ever.

      @@andyH_England Microsoft is the biggest company in the world, and owns much of IT.
      It's the least "desperate" company I could imagine.
      They are trying different things because they can, not because they're desperate.
      And by any measure, some of their products look competitive, at least.

    3 hours at what highest demanding setting anyway if you need touch then MacBook is out of question and it sucks for 2021 laptops other than gaming machines without touch.

    The macbook is well more trust worthy in my opinion. I've had both and there's a reliablity issue I have with Windows where it always needs an update, or a driver or something else when you just want to jot down an idea, or quick sketch... that always got to me and in ways the iPad pro fullfilled since it was ALWAYS ready... I've been on the hunt for a all in one device, the Surface Laptop Studio is getting closer to that but with bettter specs and RUNNING MAC OS!

    I'm not sure if these are even comparable for artists, one of them you can draw with, the other one you cannot. That's kind of a dealbreaker I think. According to some of the patents, Apple is working on a device like the Surface Studio. Hopefully one day they bring it out. Call it like the "MacBook Artist" or something.

  • @mattpipes5106

    It’s an interesting comparison… I think both are compelling machines, probably not for me. For art I use my refurb 2018 iPad Pro, and that is also my main computer, but for when I need a more traditional computer, for things like Inkscape and updating my website and stuff I use a 13” M1 MacBook which has all the power I need and then some. So I am a Apple ecosystem person… but the pro and the max are way more than I need. The Surface is much cooler than it’s predecessor, which seemed gimmicky. I am interested in the longevity of the Surface though… Sometimes Microsoft is very innovative and daring in the design without factoring in long time use, wear and tear etc. The hinge looks complicated and expensive to repair… Although it does seem to make a super solid use case, I would be interested to know what it is like to live with long term.

    Yep, keep pushing 🍏, they should've create something like Surface Studio for animators/artist, or they could've just makes iMac software available on iPad..i mean, M1 is crazy good..make use of it..push em hard 🤣..

      - better thermals & noise

      Because Brad is a smooth operator - he gets to praise the Surface for it's 2-in-1 capabilities (essentially the first category) and in the end mollify his mac-fan viewers that he after all still preferred the macBook.
      Everybody gets their word-view (re)confirmed, fewer down-votes, and that's a win-win 🥳..
