Hi cturboaddict, I want to say thank you very much! After watching your videos, I have fixed my first boat in life with Mercury 850 on it. I rebuilt carbs, starter and fuel pump. It ran pretty well on Lake Ontario. I just bought another boat and merc 850 at very low price and I'm going to fix it with my just-gained experience!
Nice video. I am cleaning my carbs now. It's a trick to get them off without taking the distributor off but it can be done on my 1150 by loosening the back nut on underside of where the distributor is bolted to the rest of the motor. It is a tight fit but I can do it with an ignition wrench, which is small enough to fit in back there. Then the carbs can be wiggled off by toggling the distributor a bit.
I'M looking in my yard in 2016 at a similar motor I was going to sell. After seeing these videos now I'm getting the itch to work on the engine my self so thank you for the inspiration.
Great share - got thru your disassembly vids 1-3 so far, on to the rest... It is really helpful to show everything as you did - not just highlights like so many vids do. My `1984ish Merc 115 has water cooling system blockage. It has CDI, not distributor but the engine looks a lot like yours.The coil cover and wiring assembly is the other major thing - the wiring has disintegrated. Your vids give me a little more courage to undertake a rebuild.
They are essentially the same motor. Some minor differences, but def the ADI motors are more desirable. Especially the late 80s motors. Look for CDI Electronics on google, they sell replacement harnesses and electrical components for your motor! Ask away bud! Thanks for watching.
I am also having trying to change the timing belt and am having trouble getting it off the engine. The disassembly in this video doesn't quite go far enough to get the belt off the main part of the engine.
Hey whats up man thanks for all the videos they have been a big help for a lot of people! I'm replacing my stator on my 79 90 hp and i cant find the torque specs for the top flywheel bolts and for the stator itself. Do you know the specs?
butch armour Sounds like reeds are getting pretty warm. When on the muffs, what is your RPMs at idle.... It should be higher than what it would be when in the lake. The open water and submerging the motor into the water creates additional backpressure on the exhaust. Hence why when on muffs, it should be a bit higher.
I searched online for diagrams and google searched the part numbers. Alot of them are available on Ebay and amazon. you just need the sierra cross numbers from them. you can also go on crowleymarine.com - Crowley Marine: OEM Boat Parts & Assemblies marineparts.com and marineengine.com

+Joe C They are in the seloc manual. I think they are 35 ft lbs, but not sure.
Make sure to use blue loctite on them.
