This was fantastic! Started watching his pipe channel and found this. I love learning about cultural history when it’s presented truthfully. Too many lies and revisionist history in the classrooms today.

Born and raised in the US south. The cursory mention of "Black spirituals" and the handwaving of those communities as not only separate but oppressed by the white communities here is criminal. The emphasis on a history of Southern music as coming primarily from Britain while glossing over the contributions of West Africa is no less than criminal. Alan, do better.
I agree. His banjo originated in Africa. His beloved Bluegrass, (which I also love) takes the Old-time songs and overlays the structure of Jazz on it. The solos played by each instrument in a blue grass song are borrowed from the jazz format. When he comments about why don't people appreciate the traditional music instead of the new forms, it's the same argument the old time country fans said about the new Bluegrass music. His charm is stronger than his arguments.
