  • 2009-2020 seemed to be the good ole days of Stewart-Haas Racing. Since 2021 the team hasn't been the same and is irrelevant regarding the championship. Leaving NASCAR fans to ask what happened to SHR?

I think the development of drivers is the issue. They didn’t give Suarez a second year, they didn’t give Cole Custer a new crew chief and they put all their eggs into the basket of Kevin Harvick.
It isn’t too late for them to turn it around but they need the help to come from within. Investing more into Chase Briscoe and, if he keeps up his results in Xfinity, maybe calling Riley Herbst up could do that.
Either way, they’ve needed to make a huge change in their lineup for years and Harvick’s retirement could be the chance for them to hit the reset button.

I think technically, ever since the end of 2020, they've been sinking like a tungsten brick in the Marianas Trench. Harvick shows strides, Aric and Briscoe have had some success (Briscoe almost making the Final 4 in 2022 is nothing to sneeze at) but have struggled a lot, but Custer and Preece are for sure outliers. Custer has talent, but I don't think the team had the equipment to get him really cooking. And look at Preece so far this year - has had bad break either on track or mechanically. He damn near should have won the Clash if the car didn't break on him.
They're really putting their eggs in the #4 car basket and it shows. It's not fair to the other drivers.

As a fan that has been with Stewart-Haas Racing, I can see several issues straight off the bat: 1) Driver development: they have rushed guys up and gave up on Daniel Suarez way too quickly, and kinda rushed Cole Custer up too fast, but luckily they have Preece and Briscoe in their back pocket, and it'll be exciting to see how that works out 2) Ownership and Managment style: Tony and Gene being involved in other projects that take up most of their time to where they have like 15 minutes to focus on SHR, has kind of taken its toll, and forcing Harvick to carry the organization on his back all these years, you got the impression that it was only going to work for so long, and look at what happened in 2020 at Martinsville.
Now the positives: Riley Herbst has been on fire as the only driver in the Xfinity Series to finish in the top ten in all of the races this season, and definitely keep an eye on him to get hot, because he has potential, for sure. Chase Briscoe, while showing flashes of potential, give him the right equipment and you'll be amazed with what he can do. I wouldn't quite throw in the towel on Preece yet, however. The season is still very young, so I think it would be a little unfair to write him off completely at this point. And in terms of reorganization at SHR, I like to think of when Tony was racing for JGR 2005 and 2011, a little bit of refocus and SHR will definitely be on the list of teams to watch out for in the near future....

The same is happening to SHR. Kurt and Harvick carried it once Tony declined. Then Kurt leaves and Harvick carries it with a victory here and there from Aric, Chase, and Cole but not much else. Harvick's success in a Ford has masked that the team as a whole has struggled since the switch. Outside of 2018 where they got all 4 cars in the round of 8, the team has barely been competitive with the Ford switch. Kurt Busch had a mediocre 2017 outside of his Daytona 500 championship, none of the other cars won in 2019, Custer was the only driver besides Harvick to win 2020 (and that proved to be a fluke), 2021 was a mess, with Almirola pulling a fluke win as their only win, and they were aggressively mid in 2022. If I was SHR I would do a complete rebuild in 2024. It will take time for them to get to victory lane. Maybe by 2026. But if they play their cards right, they can probably get to victory lane quicker with this lineup:
4: Josh Berry has shown that he can drive a cup car and keep it out of trouble. If SHR can land him, they’ll have a future to build upon with their Xfinity program.
10: Ryan Preece moves from the 41 to the 10. Preece can drive a race car and knows how to get the job done. But driving the 41 isn’t gonna help him get a multi win season.
14: Chase Briscoe stays in the 14 as he shows promise and can stay on track when he’s not getting into trouble. I think he’ll get. Win or two next year now that he will most likely get the top priority of the team.
41: I think it’s best for the 41 to be a developmental team with drivers like Custer and Herbst getting to share a ride while also giving other drivers not in nascar, a good team and car to compete for a possible win. I’d think of it as something similar to project91 where it’s shared by a bunch of different drivers. If they were to put a driver in the 41, give Todd Gilliland a chance. He deserves a shot in some good equipment.

To me it seem like a lack of leadership due to Tony Stewart changed focus to his racing serie, and joined NHRA. So all they need is a strong leader with a 100% commitment , which they do not have anymore. As of today they could probably just shut down in 2024, and save their fans from further embarresment. It probably is easier to sell SHR than find someone to turn the downward spiral.

This may be controversial but I think they need to downsize after Harvick retires. Get a good payout from that charter and focus their resources on the remaining 3 teams. They may have to sign Riley Herbst for his funding once Smithfield's and Aric Almirola leave. If that funding isn't enough they may even have to become a 2 car organization and drop the 10 car. If Busch beer leaves I can't see them becoming elite again without downsizing.

This is an accurate fact based, we'll researched & articulate production worthy of being deemed a Spoerts Introspective Documentary, as well as a great fact reference to refer to if anyone is doing a story on SHR. If they had an Emmy or Espy Award for internet-based productions (as opposed to theater or television based), this would be a likely nominee in several categories. The SHR Ownership Agreement is fundamentally flawed & almost inevitably deemed to fail, but an interesting escape clause for both Stewart & Haas. Recently, I recall an announcement that the Stewart side of Stewart-Haas was welcoming a new man to head up that side of the organization. Two entire but separate management teams in one organization can only cause undue & excessive costs, personality friction & factions within the company, where each employee position's counterpart within the same organization are not always in the know of what the other side is doing, like hiring and firing drivers, even when that driver is the son of the President of the team

I was there with Newman won the brickyard, that was a pretty exciting race at the end. Honestly at this point if I was a NASCAR driver with Front Row Motorsports looks about as appealing as half the Stewart Haas cars do right now . There is something really wrong there that Harvick is the only competitive car. Letting Kurt Busch go was not a good move. I think whoever takes the 4 should be a veteran driver, because they don’t have an elite level veteran presence. I think Aric Almirola is a good driver but he it’s not even close to being elite and he will eventually retire in the next year or two.

I truly believe as a NHRA fan Tony Stewart today enjoys NHRA significantly more then NASCAR and it’s proven since he’s pretty much at every NHRA race and with him competing and as a team owner. I know he love circle track ultimately more then drag racing but I believe he’s fed up with NASCAR management and Ford telling him he can’t sign Kyle Larson. I believe Tony Stewart is all in on the NHRA, SRX series, and Eldora. I do enjoy the NASCAR 03 music in the background.
