- Welcome to my FX Series of videos on the Behringer X32 console. This series is taking a look at the effect rack built into the X32. Today we look at the Leisure Compressor which is an emulation of the Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveling Amplifier. View my blog post about the leisure Compressor at: dbbaudio.com/2...
If you haven't already, make sure to check out my new website dbbaudio.com for the latest news and updates! Thanks so much!
We had 2 LA2As at Fleetwood, and they always astonished me. This demo sounds very close to the real thing!
that moment when yout realize that you have LA-2A built in it is just mind blow!
Thank you Drew. Your videos are helping our church tech team to more easily transition from analog to Digital.
Drew thank you for the excellent tutorials. As a newbie to my X32 compact you have made my learning experience a breeze! The routing and effects are what takes some time playing around with to get use to but you skip right to the points and the quality of your video is perfecto!.
Great Tutorial for understanding the benefit of using Leisure compressor. Thanks Drew from France
Great job Brother. Your videos are a life saver! I am helping another Church set up their new X32 and after cramming for 20 hrs with your videos, their audio went from a zero to fantastic! The fact that you use Reaper is just icing on the cake.
Thanks once again for another video explaining X/M32 features!
drew you are an awesome instructor! thanks so much for this tips - its really life changing for me.
Thanx a million tintin... ;-) .. this video collection is a great introduction to the X32... thumbs up!
Drew thanks so much for the series you are doing - I've played around with most of the FX but was just going by ear, your measurements help so much and contribute a LOT to the "32" user community! One thing to add, if you are using the P16 outs with "pre EQ" tap be sure to set the insert position to "Post" or your musicians will hear/get the FX gain changes!
You're welcome Sean! Thanks for the comment!
Hell yes this is such great info !!! Engineer knowledge here 🏋️♂️
Thank you for your tutorials. I'm new to the X Air world. Your videos are helping me immensly.
I use this to compress the singers that have poor voice volume control. They either move their mic in and out or they vary their voice volume too much. This in combination with the channel compressor works great.
Isn't this called parallel compression? Actually, maybe not since the leisure compressor is inserted in series with the on board compressor?
@@eddiezarate2 Parallel compression is where you combine the original dry signal with a very compressed signal (great on drums if you know what you're doing). This can be applied easily to the inbuilt channel compression by adjusting the 'Mix' knob inside the compressor settings. However, I believe what Sheetbender is doing is using the Leisure Comp AND the inbuilt channel compressor in series, which is called 'two stage compression'.
You could get really fancy and combine parallel compression and two stage compression within one channel strip but you'd need pretty decent gain before feedback... not going to happen in my wee venue.
that is also my fav, compressor and effect in the x32. It really is the icing on the cake for great vocals
THANKS DREW.. Great video. I truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I owe my X32 knowledge base to you. Again Thanks.
So all these effects come with the board?
Yes they do.
Yess they come with the board... it’s some emulator technology. Even yamaha used this on their very higher end models, which is better. But we cannot compare a 4000$ with 300000$ mixer
Heh
Nice gona try this! Just be carefull with feedback when compressing live sound!
Thanks you for this great help. 🎉🎉 what is ever best compressor for the band 🙏
Thank you for the video.legend
Would you recommend using the leisure comp on the vocal channels and then a stereo combinator on the vocal group bus or the other way around?
Great vid, really clear and helpful, thanks
Andrew, God bless you. I have a few questions:
1)Was her voice audible during the vocal performance and you just lowered its level for this video to use it as an example of what this compressor can do?
2)Were you behind the console recording them while they were singing?
3)Do you control the vocal performance levels without affecting the recording levels?
4)Is it you or someone else who works the house sound while you are behind the console recording?
I don't have a lot of knowledge in this realm. Could you explain to me why this is superior to the compression that's available on the channel strip?
Hey Drew, Thanks for your videos which are very usefull.
One question: it is possible to insert two FX rack in only one channel? For example, a Leisure comp + a DeEsser in a voice chanel.
Thx in advanced.
How do you record a band on the X32 and then play it back through the board with the ability to edit, mix, insert, etc? Thank you Drew!
Good video!!!
Hey Drew! I'm fairly new with the x32 but have resorted to your videos for guidance! You're a fantastic instructor and everything makes much more sense.. I do have a question for your expertise. I have the x32 rack paired with the s16.. does the rack not include some effects such as the leisure compressor and fair? If so, how do I access them?!?
Awesome! How many channels can you insert the compressor? Only 2?
I do it like you show, bu nothing happend ... hmmm ... dual compressor one chanell a and b for different chanels but i cant anything going on ... but on display the compressor works... and by the way, very good videos!! thanks for this work
Hi Drew, would you like to do a tutorial on the behringer x32 built in sub octaver effect? Greetings
Great tutorial, I always want to try using X32's onboard fx on my recorded tracks in DAW. Can I know how do you save the setting for all the projects you have in your DAW? There are time we need to reopen the file to re edit from time to time, but how do you recall the fx setting in X32? I know we can save the setting in X32 and search and reapply the same setting to the same song, but I am researching for a smarter integration, maybe some auto recall once the same file loaded in DAW?
Drew, is this a good compressor to use in Live situations or is it best used post recording?
+Jeff Graves great question Jeff! I use this effect live and in combination with the channel dynamics. Typically I will have this set as an insert configured to pre EQ so that I can get the most adjustability out of the setup! Love using this on any vocal that I have on the board!
Do you think this Leisure can be better for vocals than the channel built-in compressor of the X-32 or X AIR mixers?
Thanx brother...blessings
Awesome video as always Drew !! I was curious if you could do a tutorial on how to set a compressor with a brick wall limiter for a DJ, example pioneer DJ 900 mixer coming into a m32 /x32
+Koshy1 Awesome question! I would use the Stereo Combinator effect for that! Check it out here ruclips.net/video/UGcXYMQjdA8/видео.html. I would set the ratio to Limiting on it!
leisure comp is also great on drums group
+nelydk nice! Thanks for the comment, I will have to try it sometime!
Wanting to use this Leisure for L-R entire mix polish, could be better combining it with a channel EQ tweak? And what about this plugin attack and release stuffs? Seems it does not have both(!?) any tutorial about mastering with compressors are about fine attack and release adjusting. Anyway, thanx for your tutorials!
Hey Drew, are you absolutely sure that both gain knobs are post-effect? I use this on bass and acoustic guitar at 2 different locations and I'm sure that the gain knob on the left works as an input gain pre-compression.
I am 100% sure that the gain knobs are post effect. In my testing, I put pink noise through just under the point that the Leisure Comp would start compressing, then no matter where I put the gain knobs, the compressor wouldn't go into more compression. I then put pink noise through the effect at a level that was compressing about 3dB, then when I would adjust the gain knobs, it wouldn't go into more or less compression. Also, on the hardware version of the LA-2A, the knob on the upper right (where Behringer put the 2nd gain knob) is for selecting how it meters, and the gain knob on the left is a post compression gain. Thanks for the comment!
+Drew Brashler ah, thanks for clarifying! This is good information!
***** You're welcome!
cuando estarán estos tutoriales traducidos al español por favor
Hey Drew, what is the best way to apply RMS limiting and peak limiting on a matrix for my subwoofer? My amp doesnt have a dsp so im hoping to incorporate my x32. Cheers!
Can you use this in Limiter mode on a livestream bus?
Is that ideal
hey Drew love the new video series on the x32 fx.
There's one thing that I'd like to critique on these videos and its that your voice sounds really ess'y and the room sounds really ambient and overly distracting while I'm trying to listen to your review.
is it possible to add some form of treatment to the walls around to dull it down a bit?
other than that i love the in depth nature you go too!!
Hey Shane! Yes I agree with you! I ended up ordering a new over the ear microphone to get better audio on my voice. You will see that in videos starting in two weeks. Thanks for watching!
+Drew Brashler hey drew that sounds great.
dont forget to put something on your walls to try and dampen the room a bit
Seems like the small gain knob measured in -db might be make -up gain.....
What happens to the channel compressor when you are using this compressor?
Brother, r u using a BM800 condenser mic here? :)
Drew, Great teaching! Love your clear and thorough videos. In this example, I believe I understand the value of compression in terms of keeping the dynamics under control. However, I'm a bit confused as to why we might not just have turned up the mic pre on the female vocalist...let's assume her dynamics weren't too wild...wouldn't that also save the risk of monitor feedback?
+Jacob Nasim Great question. This is an example for if the singer had some really bad microphone technique, in other songs she is quite loud, and on others she is quite soft. A compressor set like this will help contain those dynamics.
Yes, whenever you add a compressor to any instrument you run a greater chance of feedback as when you gain the channel up, you also raise the noise floor and feedback point. It is always best to teach proper technique with the vocalist, but sometimes you just gotta make it work!
Thanks for the comment!
Got it. Can't wait to try this technique. Keep up the great work!
Speaking of monitor feedback...I'd love to see you do two demos: 1) Tuning a room with pink noise and the corresponding set-up on the x-32 using the 31-band EQs. (I've seen your intro to the EQs but would love you to go deeper using the RTA to flatten the room response.) 2) Techniques and strategies for ringing out a room's stage wedges. (I wish the X32 included Behringer's Feedback Destroyers but maybe not necessary with proper tuning?) I'd love to see a live demo of how to save a feedback moment given there's no feedback destroyers in the mixer. Many thanks!
Can you please make the plate reverb explain video?
Thank you so much
I am new to the x32 and using any of its effects. Southside community church in Paragould, AR is where i attend. Our board and speakers are all powered units and also hooked up in a mono configuration. Our auditorium has no dampening it is a tall square metal building with box inset behind the sound board that amplifies what is actually happening on the floor. 2 subwoofers they placed underneath and on opposite sides of stage create dead zones all over the seating area we need help!!!!!!!!
with what can i get a more transparent compresion so it doesent hurt my tone when i sing but stil compress alot with the rnc fmr comp or the midas and beriger plug ins like stereo lesiure comp that come with the xr 12 and mr 12.........compreser hard and cleannnn
come on my man give me a hit
Is it fine if I use this fx as well as the channel compressor?
When inserting an effect do I engage the MAIN LR BUS under BOARD MIXES? Any help appreciated.
x32 compact
Great stuff man. Question, have you tried using this as a master/bus compressor? Can the two be linked together?
+Jeremy Leff great question! There is both the dual and stereo version of the compressor so if you are using on a bus or mains, I would go with the stereo version. I have not personally used it on a bus myself, I find it more advantageous to use on individual channels that need it.
Hi can u insert four different effects
Hey Drew! Thanks for these awesome videos, they're so helpful! I was wondering in what situations you would use the Leisure or the Combinator in for vocals? Is one better used in certain situations than the other, or just personal preference? I'm just trying to get more of an up in the front of the mix clean powerful vocal for our live worship sets. Also, would you recommend using either of these comps for putting on the overall main LR, or maybe the Sound Maxer? Just to get a tighter cleaner sounding overall mix. Thanks so much!!
So great that you asked about the Sound Maxer, I just posted a video about that today! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/Yoln4oTkdwI/видео.html. My personal preference is to use this on my lead vocalist when I have the extra effect rack space. I find it also very useful when the vocalist has really poor microphone technique. Just remember that if you really really compress a quiet singer, you will hit feedback faster, so just be careful.
Hey Cam (and Drew!) in my experience the LA2A (Leisure) makes a BIG difference if you use it as a channel insert, especially to lift vocals out of the mix. Before using it, I had feedback issues and couldn't get to a proper level. Since using it, I have exactly what you described - a clean, powerful vocal for live worship sets. Everyone has noticed and given very positive reviews. Definitely give it a try and use Drew's charts on his blog for proper Gain and Peak Reduction settings.
+Sean Kent one more question, I am using this on my lead vocalist, does this mean I should no longer use the built-in compressor(dynamics,as it's called on the board) or is it a good idea to still use both? Thanks!!
+Cam Stewart Unless your lead vocalist has very loud, inconsistent dynamics I'd recommend just using the FX compressor.
sir u never responded 1 quest .......i need u man what compressor or precision limiter to get a vocal reduction only when shouting that doesent color sound so singer hears exacly same but lower no coloring below just limiting after ex 12 db......donrt want it to color even touch the other partsss just limit clean ........big hugs from ibiza
hey drew , i like the idea of this compressor however it appears that it can only be used on two sources at a time ( a and b ) what would tou d in a case that you have six vocalist ?
thanks
Hey Charles! You would have to use 3 FX racks! It is quite a bummer eh?
Charles Hutto
Hey Charles. On my X32 I have two separate sub groups. One for "Lead Vocals" and the 2nd for "backing vocals" so I have 2 lead vocalists and 3 backing vocals. I use the compressor on the sub groups and not individual mic channels. Hope it helps
Is there a way to meet with you and have some 1 on 1 training I’m the newest member of our sound team and we have this system
how can you use fx rack 1-4 as an insert?
Drew, would you use this and the built in compressor as well?
+David Freeman yeah! I love using this and the channel dynamics. I find that the Leisure Compressor is really well suited if the vocalist has bad mic technique and I will insert it on the channel as pre EQ and dynamics. Then I still have the ability to add a bit of limiting just in case!
I usually don't use compressors pre eq, since it will trigger also for frequencies I will cut out, but I will try this Leisure as soon as I get the Behringer.
What is the name of the song you were mixing ?
Hello Drew i bought you Effects pack... How do i add them to the library on the Mixer?
The effects which come in the mixer are default. They cannot be removed nor added. They are default from Behringer
Is this better than using the limiter per channel?
You can achieve a similar result using either the channel dynamics or the Leisure Compressor. However, the Leisure Compressor is going to have a release that is more program dependent whereas the channel dynamics is going to only worry about the threshold and timings of attack and release. I personally love the Leisure Compressor and find that it is one of the most useful effects built into the X32.
My Pastor talks softly and then can get really loud. Is this what I want to use to make him even???
This is the behringer version for the teletronix la 2a theirs a lot of versions of this but the real one has to say teletronix and i belive is about 3500
=>Vietnamese. Tks
Wtf? Those are the INPUT Gain and the POST compression OUTPUT gain...

You should have your microphone hooked up to it show us the difference show us the difference in that ridiculous room that you're in
