I was born in 1936 in the UK and became a Zionist at the age of between 5 and 6, although i didnt know it. All the kids in my class told me to go back to my own country. I ran crying to the teacher who told me the kids were right. I asked my mother where is my country. She told me we didnt actually have a country. I said that one day i'd have a country and when i did I'd go there. It took many years but in 1979 i came to Israel and have lived happily here since. Anti semitism has always been rampant in the UK. Well they didn't want the Jews, who tried so hard to fit in, so they are welcome to what they've now got.
In 1933 the Zionist Jews broke an international boycott against the Germans by signing an agreement called the 'Haavara Agreement' in 1933 with the German Nazi Party.
Immigration into Palestine was far easier for Zionist Jews from the U.K. and the U.S., who, according to immigration records, showed that over TWO-THIRDS of German Jews applying for citizenship to Palestine between 1933 to 1939, were REFUSED by the Zionist Jews in charge.

Very distressed and sorry for your experience. I'm in my 50's and from the west Highlands of Scotland. We don't really have ANY tradition of antisemitism. Possibly because we have this funny idea in some parts of Presbyterianism of the old covenant still being in existence. I'm not sure. 'Not religious myself'...is I believe the expression.

I Would say ( born in UK in 1973) that the double standard Melanie refers to that she found at the Guardian was more a feature of left wing intellectuals and not of the general public. My fsther was a labour man ( ex miner) and fought in WW2 and seemed to me as a generation we were totally aware of the evil of the Nazis and their treatment of the Jews and would have had none of it, my Dad included. Does it have me wanting grab a copy of the book.....of course it does. Did the discourse touch on matters critical to western society of course it did.....does it touch on matters raised much earlier in social development and best summed up in the saying....."if I am not for myself who will be for me? And if I am for myself then who or what am I? And if not now, when?" This discussion and Melanie's book clearly address those critical questions if Identity, Purpose and Value (the importance of Now).

Not exactly. I'd say they're experimenting with the possibility of coexisting with it. So far the results are clear -- it is not sustainable and the costs are too great. The present stage in this ill advised experiment is to continue the experiment but shift strategies for containment. This, of course, will fail. The final phase is soon upon us: radical resistance. The challenge then becomes very difficult. The west will need to transform itself into a much clearer, more forceful and literal manifestation of their fundamental and foundational principles -- without compromise. At this point, if we take these necessary, self-preservational steps, we will for a time become unrecognizable to ourselves. We will lay ourselves open to accusations from our own people of turning "fascist," "totalitarian," "un-Christian" or, in the case of the Jews, accused of acting like the Nazis did towards them. (The latter, of course, is already happening among critics of the Jewish state's defense of itself.). Which brings me to the more prescient question: what are we to do right now? We need our nations to revisit their foundational principles fearlessly, debate them without fear of censure or accusations of "bigotry" or "jingoism." Clarify. Reformulate where they were less than adequately couched. And resolve internal contradictions where they are being exploited by the enemies of civilization to bring about our downfall. This will no doubt feel to many as a waste of time, preferring to immediately rush to drastic measures. That would be a mistake, as it will not prepare us for sustaining the very long, protracted ideological war that awaits us. Think. Revisit. Adjust. Plan. Attack & push back. Islam has taken 1400 years to think about their strategy to undermine humanity and plunge it back to pre-civilizational barbarity. We needn't take nearly so long, but first, think we must!

I love Melanie’s analysis of the state of the West and how our futures are tied to the future of Israel.
She speaks with pragmatic optimism and great insight and wisdom.
I am a student of the Bible and can see the God of Abraham Issac and Jacob continue to protect and keep his chosen people.
The history of Israel to this day can be seen as a continual cyclical narrative of a faithful nation before their God that then falls away into rebellion and faithlessness. It is only when the people repent and turn back to their God that God restores and saves.
Because I have a biblical world view I know one day ‘ Israel’ will be saved to the Glory of God.
What has happened to the church in the Uk was particularly interesting as I have identified this social gospel as being a red herring that scuppers the life of a Christian by taking away their focus from the object of their faith, being Christ Jesus. It becomes a works based gospel and not about living out our lives as Melanie said that keeps to God’s word by God’s grace.

It seems that Nazism and McCarthyism have one thing in common. They both appear to have been born out of resentment of the extraordinary success of the Jews.
Perhaps. And an interesting observation. But here's the problem: the steps the west will be obliged to take if they are to re-assert their foundational principles and route out the enemies of their civilization, we will need to embark upon a process that will bear in many of its aspects a strong resemblance to McCarthyism. Though we may rightfully regard this alleged resemblance as superficial and false, we will face a massive amount of pushback from this false comparison. We need to prepare for this now, and be prepared to enter that fray with some very powerful counterarguments. What Melanie is helping us with is to prepare those arguments now, rather than having to cobble them together on the fly, constantly on the defensive and unconvincing for the appearance of engaging in ad hoc fabrication.

Tikkun Olam is not necessarily a foreign concept to Judaism, but it's definitely taken on some overly altruistic, almost turn-the-other-cheek characteristics. The idea itself is from Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah, and stems from the broken vessels concept.
