I like to buy my black eyed peas in one pound bags in the frozen section. It's true, not everyone likes them, but I love them!
Excellent version of a southern classic! Here's to a great New Year for you too, Michael!
Thank you Doc and may you have a GREAT new year as well :)
This looks do darn good! Anything with bacon is a winner for me. I'm off to pick up the ingredients.
Thank you Monica :-)
I've never heard of this recipe before, looks yummy! I may have to try it.

Thank you Ray!
Good luck in 2017 to you too Michael.
Thank you and good luck to you as well :)
I have two sweet potato dishes on my channel. The scalloped sweet potatoes must into your mouth, soft and delicious. I put chili in mine, but you sure do not have to do that.
Michael
This looks very tasty with all the seasonings and herbs!
Thank you Barb!
I have always enjoyed that type of food.
Thank you!
~michael
What a wonderful recipe! It looks so delicious. I may try this version this year.
Thank you Kendall. I am thinking that we just might cook and like many of the same foods. I highly admire you!
~Michael
Can't wait for someone to invent Smellavision. I never heard the blackeye peans and New Year thing, but this recipe has 3 elements that make me determined to try it - I love blackeye peas. And I'm so incapable of planning meals.
Thank you!
~michael
That looks tasty micheal, never seen this done before. Very nice
Thank you Angie, beans and rice are a complete protein? I think I have heard that before.
looks like a good lunch item for work to just microwave it when you need it
Great idea, thank you so much!
I love your videos and recipes...have a great weekend!!!
Thank you so much LouiseMarie :)
that looks really good. i love black eye peas
Thank you Lyle!
We have this every New Years Day, no luck yet! I usually throw a couple of smoked ham hocks or neck bones in it. Your recipe looks excellent! Rock On Michael!
You had some good luck, 5000 subs. Of course you deserve many many more, but 2016 was not all bad. It was a great year of inclusive rights to many people! I love using smoked hocks and also smoked turkey wings too!
~Michael
You cook a great meal for yourself to enjoy! Everyone does different things with hopping john with rice put in it, and if this is a delightful meal cooked your way ENJOY! Thanks for your video!
Thank you Denise, I hope you have a great New Year!
~Michael
Rice is a staple here in our country so this is something that I could definitely consider making often (I'd substitute the black-eyed peas for like kidney beans or whatever). Good shit, Michael. Keep it up!
Yes, you sure can substitute and make it your way for sure!
Ok.....so I got inspired to look this up from 'Boardwalk Empire'. I lived in Texas for 3 years but never heard of it! Now I've improvised a vegetarian version. Ginger, tofu, coconut milk added. Tasted great! Also, one could substitute rice (with cracked wheat or millet)
That is really why I do all these videos, to inspire and give people ideas of something to cook. Thank you BigV!
~Michael
Making this dish today! Only thing I do differently is fry the rice first then add it to the mix to boil. Love it!!!💕
Thank you for watching!
Looks delicious Michael!
Thank you Ellen :)
Yum! I love this dish!!
Thank you Felicia!
Thank you Michael so much for sharing. This Hopping John looks absolutely delicious. I'm so making this for the upcoming New Year. Again thank you Michael. 😍😍
Happy New Year Eliza!
Michael's Home Cooking Thank you Michael and Happy New Year to you and your family as well. 🎅🎄🎁🎋🎉🎊🎈🎈🎊🎉🎋🎁🎄🎅
I'd heard that people eat black eye peas for New Years. Around here it's cabbage. Cabbage anything. The dish looks yummy as always. Hugs!
There must be traditions everywhere! Around here it is black eye peas for good luck and greens (like collards) for lost of money :)
I mean lots of money.
Thank you so much for making this... Never heard of it...but it looks Great... :)
Thank you Tom!
I believe this is an Eastern/Southern dish.
I like black eye peas, but everyone does not. I made this for my father one time a few months ago. Found out he does not like black eye peas much.
~Michael
Michael's Home Cooking Yeah, I just started working at a restaurant near Frankfort and a Hoppin’ John is on the menu. I saw Sean Brock make it and he’s from South Carolina I think.
Yum looks great!
Thank you Chef :)
That is a cracking Risotto, nicce one Michael !
Thank you!
I've heard of hoppin' John, but I thought it was a blues singer, lol. Looks like a right tasty dish.
Thank you Jeanette!
looks YUMMY! Hi Michael.... Good luck to you also!
mike
Thank you Mike. So sorry about Smokey Joe
Best recipe I'VE seen😋😋😋I'm trying tomorrow 😉😊
Thank you Rose and Happy New Year!
~michael
Looks yummy!
Thank you Amy :)
Michael, I like it! It's been a while since I have had black eye peas. Great recipe. Enjoyed. :)
I made this for my Dad a few months ago, he did not eat much, lol. He doesn't really care for black eye peas and I wasn't aware of that. I don't know why I had to tell you that, but I had to, lol. Thank you for watching Tess :)
~Michael
Michael, Thanks so much for sharing. Greatly appreciated. Yes, as I remember, black eyed peas taste similar to asparagus. They have a distinct flavor. I have never used dried black eyed peas. Your use of black eyed peas in this recipe is awesome. I love the combination and flavors. I will have to give it a try. Thanks and have a great day. Tess :)
Looks Great!!👍
I can't wait to make this. I love Hoppin John and this has a couple of ingredients I don't usually use so I can't wait to use them! you're a magician in the kitchen:-)
Thank you so much for everything Elizabeth. I made this for my father, he did not really care for it. He told me he likes regular beans. He meant Great Northern, lol.
~Michael
***** oh you make me chuckle. My dad would have said the same thing and he would have meant Great Northern beans. I am going to make this and my mother will love it because she grew up on a farm with 6 kids where you ate would you were given and she loves everything I make anyway so I will have to let her know here comes another Michael recipe. I just know my mother and I will love it. I like traditions so I always made Hoppin John on New Year's Day and now I've got a new recipe to try right now for it. You see Michael when my mother passes away I have no other family my brother pre deceased her and so did my dad and I don't have extended family so I want to make memories now. Thank you for helping me do that :-)
Looks delicious. Pretty serving dish. The sauerkraut looks pretty good too. :-)
I wish you a happy, healthy 2017!!!
That serving bowl is one of a few that I decided to buy around 2006. I was collecting all kinds of kitchen glass and bowls etc. My passion was mostly the depression glass items. I would also collect fire king items and Jewel Tea patterned items and jadeite. When I moved here in 2014 I never really unpacked most of the items. Thank you for noticing the bowl and for watching Rosie!
~Michael
looks real good
Thank you! I hope you have a great New Year!
Yum! This looks epic 😄
Wow, thank you!
had to Re Subscribe to your channel, will have to try this one!
Thank you Tina, very nice of you!
I would never expect everybody to like everything I make. You might get tired of my cooking, but there will be things that pop up that you might really like.
Thanks again!
Michael
I've heard of Hoppin' John but have never had it. The black-eyed peas superstition is one I haven't even heard. Just happens I have a can in the cupboard right now. Maybe I'll eat the whole can on New Year's Day. Do fresh black-eyed peas bring more luck than canned?
The canned ones bring the most luck. No, any will do fine. These were dried ones that I soaked overnight. I don't know why I said fresh, I will blame it on my old age. We all need some good luck and if you eat greens like collards on New Years Day, you are suppose to have lots of money that year!
Is it OK to substitute cheesecake for collards since they both start with a "c"?
I am thinking about making a caramel cheesecake if I get motivated today! I cannot say 'yes' to your question. Greens are the traditional food to have on New Years Day, I apologize.
I figured the news would be bad.
Love your recipe.. Thanks for sharing I am a black eye peas lover.
P. S. Next time be very careful where do you put your serve plate, you can burn yourself or broke the plate if the stove still hot, this happened with me.
Thank you for your input, I appreciate that!
~michael
That looks amazing! Yum!!
Thank you Charlene, sure wish you would subscribe!
~michael
Looked like a yummy side dish. I just got the instant pot I am sure when I learn it I can do all this in that jedi pot. )
I would image you can use that new toy of yours!
~Michael
Delicious!
Thank you 😋
Suppose you could use regular navy beans? this really looks good Michael. this is another recipe Id like to try!!!
Sure, you can use those if you wish!
Looks Awesome !
Thank you my friend. I hope you have a great 2018!
YOU TOO !
I've never even heard of it (must be a southern thing) but it does look good. It looks like you just dump everything you have laying around into the pot. How much of the bacon comes through with everything else you add?
Well Tony, the bacon does not come through very much at all. You would have to add quite a bit more if you want that, like 3/4 pound probably. I only used 4 slices as there is usually around 16 slices in a pound.
"Not the way YOU make it"... I think most of us make it spelling "hoppin'" with two Ps. ;)
With saying that, I am trying to keep people from saying that I am doing it all wrong. I get that with especially southern things. Now I see the other side of me saying that. Thank you for that! I changed the spelling as well, thank you for that!
Honestly, I had no idea what Hoppin' John was until this video. I thought you were having a guest host :)
I've never heard of Hoppin' Johns. Looks like good comfort food and relatively healthy. I kinda want to use my ham broth for it though. Do you think that would work?? Or would be be too strong a flavor?
You can see (of course) that you can make this healthier, I know you can :).
But yes this is a semi healthy dish that can be your meal or a side dish with even ham :)
Ham broth would go fine with this and a great compliment.
I have not tried ham broth, so I would use maybe half broth and half water my first time.
Hoppin' John is an eastern/southern dish that really is eaten the first day of the year and other times as well :)
Thank you so much for watching and considering making!
~Michael
Michael, I love your cooking videos. Some I watch just because I enjoy seeing good food made, even if it's not something I can make, and others I make as is or adapt to suit us. I love them all though. Tonight was your pork chop recipe from a long time ago. Yummy.
Thank you Liz, I know your son cooks a lot as well and he comes up with such good ideas!
Do you cover the pot initially when you were cooking the Black Eyed Peas?
I did not. I only used the lid after adding the rice. Thank you for your question Barbara!
Hoppin johns you use field peas
Ok don't laugh, but i've never heard of Hoppin John before. it looks tasty though :-)
I guess people from Ohio don't make this, it is southern. Thank you for having a look Gail :)
~Michael
well that explains it. lol.
Ah, you fixed the title. :)
Yes, I was never a good speller. When I was a kid I did not see the sense in spelling all that much. Now I realize it makes you look dumb :)
~Michael
*Hoppin'
Yes!
I'm a southerner born and raised! This ain't how my mom made hopping john ! Her's was not goowie like that!
