Very strange hybrid beasts. When I went over there to NI,my first thought was that they were the BR Class 210s which had by then been withdrawn from BR. Closer inspection and asking friendly crews revealed the truth, 455/317/Sprinter -type body from BREL, engines recovered from the old 70 or River class along with traction motors, all by English Electric. The engine's an EE 4SRKT as used on the old Southern Region DEMUs I spent many happy years working on, the motors were EE536 or 538 from memory. Same main gen as a 73 ED on the SR. Power car trucks, BR MK6 as used on our later 4CIG and the 4VEP EMUs too. Bagged a ride on a 70 Class too, great trip !

Interesting trains for their time. I like the sound they make as they sound similar to the CSD D750, D752-754 class locomotives from the Czech Republic. Great video and thanks for sharing.

Yea man I miss those good old trains, very reliable and I loved the big rumble of those Diesel engines. I live in Carrickfergus also, and I thought that train station looked mighty familiar lol

Same seats inside as the Class 313/314/315s on the UK mainland but looks like a sprinter outside.

+dminalba A strange hybrid of 317/455/Sprinter, a bit of Br's later 4 CIG and 4 VEP EMU's , and a bit of Southern Region DEMU ! The power equipment on these was removed from the UTA/NIR 70 Class sets, scrapped due to ageing trailers, and blue asbestos.

80 Class Motor 69 looked spotless. Whole set fitted with safety interlocked doors I see. Hopefully this unit was saved, otherwise, what a waste !

Lovely old units. I wonder why they couldn't have been refurbed seeing as they have modern sliding doors? The bogies are presumably maintained on an exchange basis as part of a planned maintenance regime; the Diesel engines could have had a major overhaul etc. (I noticed how clean the engines are new but they smoke once the injectors are worn).

Well, the underframes were from Mk1 coaches, the engines had been in service since the 1960s and they were less efficient. Also, 1/6 of the train was taken up by the engine compartment which is non-existent in its successors as their engines are underfloor.

The two 80 Class cars nearer the camera (can't tell what the other half of the set was), 8069 and 8749, have been preserved at the Downpatrick and County Down Railway

I believe the formation was 8069 (or 8090, they seemed to swap a lot)-8749-8752-8094 in the final days but don't quote me on it!

+Renown lover These used the smallest version of the EE Co engine, a 4SRKT. You'll find them in the old BR Southern Region DEMU stock too.
