I could listen to this guy talking about aeroplanes all day. A mixture of fact and narration he paints a real picture of every aeroplane he describes as he paints a picture of their place in history.

One of the unique features of the Il-86 was the "luggage at hand system." This involved passengers bringing their luggage out to the aircraft. They would then board through the cargo hold, drop off their bags, and go upstairs into the cabin.
I flew aboard Aeroflot IL-86 aircraft on a few occasions, most notably on the JFK-LED route in 1992. I suspect it was used for prestige, since it required two refueling stops to make the trip. There was supposed to have been an improved version, the IL-86M, which would have used CFM56 turbofans, but that project was cancelled and resources directed toward the development of the IL-96-300.

The Soviets were trailing behind with engine technology and they were no match to the west. A consistent theme was how their aircraft were hamstrung by suboptimal engines.
the historical context of aviation technology during the Cold War is fascinating. The Soviets did face challenges with engine technology compared to Western designs, which often impacted the performance and reliability of their aircraft.

Absolutely nonsense. IL-86 was developed in the 70s and began its carrier in 1980, what was long before the A340.
@@vladilenkalatschev4915 But that is part of the problem. The IL-86's development was extremely long, facing a lot of challenges due to Soviet technological and industrial limitations. There are stories about an informal but apparently official meeting between Ilyushin and Boeing representatives, where the Boeing guys explained why and how engines should be installed under the wing and not at the back like on the IL-62, and in return Ilyushin shared with Boeing some of its experience regarding the use of titanium. The result of all this was than when the IL-86 finally entered service, it was already technologically dated and inefficient. Even the national airlines of the Eastern Bloc countries didn't want to order it.
