- Dwarf Fortress is an incredible game, but its got "a few" quirks that take some time to get use to. Tombs are also one of them.

I can't believe this game is finally out on steam
Same! I've been playing on and off for roughly the last decade and a half, so glad this game can reach a broader audience with a UI made for human beings 😅
Hot Tip for new players:
Dig down to -100 elevation ASAP! If nothing happens, dig down to -150. If nothing happens keep going.
Only veterans know this but you get a secret cave! It's full of goodies that you'll need for early game.
To steal a line from Dawn Somewhere:
"You can never dig too deep or too greedily".
There's candy and a circus!
I was not great at the game until I realized this, now i can win the game pretty fast and consistently. Its also really fun
Shit…
THIS IS LIES THIS IS LIES I HAVENT PLAYED THE GAME BUT I SWEAR THIS IS LIES EVERYONE KNOWS YOU NEVER DIG TOO DEEP
"Here lies Balin son of Fundin, Lord of Moria."
It would be nice if you could just create a single zone containing all coffins, instead of a separate zones for each one. Hopefully in a future update.
I set up a bunch of tombs, and my dwarves are refusing to bury their dead 😢
I have the zones set to the deceased dwarves (immediately after they died) and they are just laying there in the middle of the hallway.
They eventually rotted and turned into ghosts. I made a corpse stockpile zone and they wouldn’t get moved there either.
There are a few ways you can mitigate this, but I can't promise it will ever stop fully 😅Perhaps the hardest lesson in DF is learning to let go of control. We're effectively running ant colonies here, and our dwarfs won't always do what we want them to.
You're on the right track with getting everything setup though, one potential fix would be to goto the labor menu and create a custom profession specifically for burial, then you could assign it to a few specific dwarves and restrict their labor (atleast for a little while) until the corpses are moved.
I like to create a corpse stockpile that strictly holds dwarves close to my tomb(s), helps get bodies from the stockpile to the tombs a bit faster that way.
Good luck!
@@BoardAndConfused Thanks! I'll try making a specific job next time. The problem was that they would never bury any bodies ever and eventually I lost my base to murderous ghosts. Better luck next time...
IIRC, in the "classic" DF you could just place a single large zone and stuff it with coffins. It was way more convenient.
Perfect length and format, thank you for making these videos!
Glad so many people are finding them useful! :D
im subscribing because i desperately need bite sized tips and not long videos or dreadful wiki scrolling. youve found a booming corner of content. dont squander this chance.
I'd still encourage you to check out the wiki if/when you get stuck, lots of really great info on there but I also have to agree. There are way to many tutorial videos out there that are 30+ minutes. DF already has a reputation for being incredibly complicated and hard to learn, and those videos reinforce that point lol. That's what inspired me to start making these.
@@BoardAndConfused oh trust me I was up way too long last night playing df and hunting the wiki. I'm cutting it close with my morning shift times right now! Haha
😂
Omg most useful video I should have done that in my first fortress. But a visiting human transformed himself into a werewolf and killed every dwarf
At least losing is fun!
ouch. i thought that wasn't supposed to happen without an announcement.
@@charleslambert3368 Yeah there was. I mean I also just found out that you are supposed to have some military squads that might've helped in that situation lol I kinda feel bad for my dwarves now but at least they don't care bc they are dead 💀💀
Bro, the worst shit just happened to my fort, I had a pop of 100 and I was building dorms and stuff, and a Goblin army shows up like "Give us that named engraved floor bars" and I was like 'Yeah whatevs" but a hunter led a Giraffe into them and the resulting conflict made them go on a massacre.
And then a Giantess attacked.
And then my dwarves ran out of water, which kind of makes the previous catastrophes seem inconsequential.
So now I've got 97 corpses, 6 dwarves, and a lot of hauling to do.
You don't even need a door. The sad part is that you have to click each coffin individually.
really now? If I remember correctly in "old" DF I could just hammer 20 coffins in one hole, choose one coffin to create the tomb and it was communal ready to automatically take 20 remains.
I like to build them as a long hallway with small spaces dug out at the side (there I place the coffins).
Yeah there are so many ways to go about it! In my current fortress I've dug these circular rooms you see in the video, only now they have with different levels.
I put them in the empty ore veins. It feels suitably dwarfy.
I've always confined and engraved. No point taking any chances
I love how you put a refuse stockpile with bones in the tomb hahaha
Trying and make it as easy as possible for my dwarfs to drag the bodies to the coffins, as you can see its working very well... 😂
Love these tutorials. I'm super noob to the game and just got it on steam. I hope you make more mini tutorials cause I have no fucking clue how to do anything lol
Glad you've found them useful! Dwarf Fortress has always been a tough game to learn, but don't let that discourage you, the longer you play, the more you'll get to grips with it!
Just remember, losing is fun!
But you have to have a separate zone for each coffin amirite? And diety forbid if you accidentally unassign a zone from a filled coffin. You're going to have a bad(fun?) time reassigning every coffin in the game.
For a shared tomb like the one in the video, sadly this seems to be the only option atm. Hoping sometime in the future we'll see an update to how the multi designation works with tombs. It would be a lot more convenient to lay out one zone instead of 10s/100s.
Hi. Please do tutoriels on butchery and or smelting metal. There is miasma everywhere from rotten meat and we are about to go to war with no weapons or armor. Help
👀
i love this video
I have a save where making a tomb crashes my game, even after reloading the autosave, is there any way to go around this except with memorial slabs?
Oh bummer! You can actually get away with only engraving memorial slabs, should prevent any restless spirits from causing trouble for ya, though your dwarfs might not be very happy about leaving their dead unburied.
And doing well too!? It's unreal this has broader appeal
Wait you can't make one big zone? I have two large tombs in my 170 dwarf colony but I have one large zone with "multi" selected, is this wrong?
I think you can
Well it's not but you can get problem with the body rotting fume can spread easily within tight space fills countless dead bodies , another problem is would be necromancer since it can be a dreadful to be dealt with when there is an endless animated corpses in one room, so to mitigate the problem in the future, you can build just like from this video
Yes you can. Unless you want an entire room to be a tomb for just one person (eg a noble), you can make one large tomb area and prettymuch fill it with coffins. That would be the better way to do this rather than make little 1x1 zones.
No multi is for making multiple rooms a single tomb. If you did multi it will only make one tomb that will be taken by one dwarf when they die then they wont bury anyone else. Gotta build multiple closed rooms for multi to work
This ^ so from my experience with how Tombs now work on the steam release, if you're doing one big room you need to designate a ton of individual tombs on each coffin, otherwise doing a multi select only creates one big tomb for one dwarf, and the rest will be left out to rot. However IF I happen to be wrong on this and the designation just lies to you in game (Showing assigned to a single dwarf, but is actually assigned to all), larger zones may actually work and would infact be way less work and a lot less tedious to setup.
What happens if I don't bury my dead? Whats this about ghosts?
There is a strong possibility you'll have spirits bugging your dwarves, some of them aren't always friendly about it 👻
Why can't they just place multiple bodies in one tomb area. Maybe someone mods this.
Worst bit is, this use to be how it worked prior to the Steam release. So hoping we can see it added back in or reworked.
A single tomb room for all dwarves is simply barbaric.
You need a small room for each dwarf and a large room with decorations for nobles/heroes/stupid and funny deaths.
Only the 1% get personal tombs when I'm in charge 😂
thanks, keep then comming please :D
Wait. Does each one of those coffins need its own tomb, or can the whole room be a single tomb?
Not working
Soo, good tip. This game is so complicated.
It is! But the more time you put in, the more you'll get to grips with it!
@@BoardAndConfused Indeed. I'm having fun trying to move a river so I have water during winter (and hopefully can put all my animals inside, grazing "mushroom grass", while the Necromancer and his army of elites attacks. Good times.
Если бы я понимал это.... Господи, игра очень интересная, но этот инглишь лангуаге, аааа, почему русификатора нет
This method is crashing my game.
