He's now living in a cage and probably will for the rest of his life because Sepilok allowed tourists and volunteers to handle and interact directly with him while also failing to teach him the proper skills needed to survive on his own in the wild. He returned to the center after each release because he depends fully on humans to eat and provide shelter.

      This center has been investigated for just this problem over and over. These orangutans are too habituated to humans and cannot survive in the wild. They allow tourists and volunteers to interact with the orangutans; the orangutans are permitted to roam freely, getting into everything without supervision; and their rehab program doesn't involve enough time in the forest. It needs to be shut down

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 3 года назад +21

      @@twujstary8680 The rehab program for very young orphans requires interaction with human caretakers so they can learn how to forage for food and build nests, learn that snakes are to be feared and, for the very young, how to climb. Because orangutans stay with their mothers until around 8yrs old and learn everything from them, they cannot be released into the wild without these skills. The issue is, the orangutans should only interact with trained caretakers, preferably the same ones the entire time they're at the sanctuary. Sepilok however, allows tourists to interact with the orangutans, which means they are too habituated to humans and may catch diseases. There have been multiple reports of orangutans that have attacked tourists and they're allowed to roam unsupervised around the sanctuary. All of this goes against what the IUCN says is necessary for the proper rehabilitation of orphan orangutans and the protection of wild populations they may come in contact with.

      He failed this release, his 3rd, because he's too habituated to humans and was not taught the skills needed to live in the wild. Sepilok allows tourists, hotel employees and various fundraising groups to interact directly with their orangutans which gets them more comfortable around humans and exposes them to multiple diseases. Combine that with a inconsistent rehab program and you have orangutans, like Mico, that rely on humans for food and shelter, which is why he's failed every time they've tried to release him. There are multiple orangutans at Sepilok that have failed repeated wild releases and will live in captivity for the rest of their lives. This center needs to be shut down because they do more harm than good

    • @Thor-Orion
      @Thor-Orion 3 года назад +3

      How is it “anti-social” if it’s a natural behavioral pattern?(not meant antagonistically, just a question of how one could apply human norms to a species with completely different natural behavior) And he failed his release, he’s back at sepilok. Somebody else said that he’s at least the sixth Orangutan this has happened to and that at least some of the others have wound up in cages because of this, because grown male orangutan are too dangerous to humans to allow them to freely roam around the areas with humans in constant close proximity.

Also anti-social is just the word to show that rhis animal does not maintain social contact. Some animals are social, like horses who live in groups with a stratified social hierarchy and some are anti-social like bears who avoid contact with others if the same species. In the wild males are normally antisocial meaning they live alone and only contact the group for reproductive purposes. That means he is an anti-social animal species. I'm sure they do tag them because they have put 7 years of work into his life and they also do research on how they do get on after rehabilitation so they surely must be tagged right someone...?

      They do it because if he is not able to adapt in the wild, he would have to be given help, or let him die. This has happened with many of them all ready. Some have been released and brought back 3 or 4 times. Some have been determined to not be able to live on their own, but they deserve a decent quality of life. And they also can help with repopulating the species.

    It's too bad that Mico couldn't have been released with another orangutan, so they would have each other, for help and companionship.

    At 1st I thought this was a clip from Orangutan Jungle School, but it's not. Looks a lot like it, but the release cages are completely different. The nice elderly woman isn't in the other one and the narrator sounds like OJS's narrator but she's different. I dont know if its intentional or not.

      I think this is the sanctuary that rehabilitates orangutans less successfully compared to BOS in Borneo and other sancturaies. The orangutans in this sanctuary looks too humanized so there are reports of their orangutans not making it alone in the wild and finding their way back to this same sanctuary (since orangutans are quite smart) compared to those being released by BOS. That is why some orangutan organizations do not like the methods of this sanctuary.

      This rehab centre is located within the vicinity of a reserved forest. So the rehabilitated orang utans can come and go as they pleased. I supposed Mico preferred to be in the centre that they decided he must be forced to get out.

      @Warslave I know. What I meant the forest that I mentioned above not just have orang utan but also monkey. So every morning I saw monkey playing around beside orang utan. Cause orang utan quite shy and scared to see human. So they rarely show up.
