When L said "I'm so ahead of my time, my grandparents haven't met yet" that was the 90's before Wayne. I was impressed and made me like metaphors in bars. RIP legend. I first learned about Big L from the "Deadly Combination" song he made with 2pac. Pac said he recorded that the same night he got shot in NY...he said he did it for free too. That's respect! Then I heard the 98 freestyle... Big L had the dopest flow and bars I'd ever heard. And Causalities of a Dice Game. Story telling like Jay-Z, Nas, and Biggie wrapped in one! It's interesting how Nas (arguably, the best known lyricist in hip hop history) stated he was scared of Big L, when in actuality, Nas (even back then) was already clearly superior in every way to Big L. I think Nas was just being kind because Big L has been gone for so long, but I don't believe he really felt that way back then about Big L.
Big L is ultimately one of the most over-rated rappers, ever. He was definitely lyrically dope, but his career peaked very early, and all he ever really demonstrated was that he was one hell of a freestyle lyricist with a pretty mediocre work ethic. I mean, when you listen to his freestyles, it's always the same handful of verses, which shows he didn't really put in work like that. The man only has ONE genuine album (The Big Picture doesn't count as it wasn't close to completion by the time he passed, hence some of the recycled tracks and lyrics), compared to Nas, who has like 3 or 4 albums by the time Big L passed. Not that he didn't have the skills and talent, but he doesn't have the output, the catalogue or anything other than his first album, and a handful of freestyles that would warrant being put on the pedestal that a lot of you put him on.
I don't care what any of you say, but Big L was not on the level of a Nas, Pun, Jay Z, Biggie, etc. (those dudes put in far more work in either the same or less amount of time compared to Big L), and it wasn't just because of his passing that made this so. Even in life, Big L was being left behind by other, BETTER rappers. I think I more than made my point.

I’m from Texas and Growing up my best friend (a Mexican hippie lol) put me on Big L. We used to have 2 12s in a Chevy cavalier going crazy to street struck. I remember how it felt when I said damn where is he and he told me he thinks he was killed. Now hearing that him and Cam and Mase were to be in a group, brings back that same feeling. Damn. Rip to the Legend Big L

Big L and Saigon are truly my favorite lyricist out of NY. Tru story: after L died and Jay rose to fame, I would say "if L was alive, Jay-Z wouldn't have been where he was"

@janet Howard, "if L was alive, Jay wouldn't be where he is".
Same has been said of Biggie, PAC,Big Pun and others.
But the truth is, the sky is big enough for all to exist or coexist.
Big L died in 1999, Jay already had 4 albums out and was already a super star after he dropped "hard knock life" in 1998.
We have also heard that Nas is better than Jay and Eminem is better than Jay, but Jay has still gotten where he is while coexisting with those others.
So, it shouldn't always be about Jay.

Your vids are dope.. I understand you using certain news clips for "receipts", but it would be awesome if you told more of the person's life story with your voice and words. As many have stated in previous comments, your flow and voice tells the story that news clips and video clips just can't duplicate. Great work though.. Mob mob mob

Jay was always setting himself up to have an excuse if got served on the mic. Like this party that he was "still trying to come down from." Or saying he never writes anything. People actually believe it too... well rehearsed.

Maaaan....Big L had flows FLOWS! and yes he got Jay on that freestyle. Matter of Fact, Hov borrow a few rhymes from the God...If L was still around, back then, Cam would be rapping Rapping like he used too. L had it all, I think rap game wasn't ready for him yet. I mean Nas was out. But Nas is more laid back with his flows. Big L was animated, but wasn't loud. He sounded good. A great storyteller "Casualties of a Dice Game" is still one of the best story told...

To be fair a lot of the yT uploads sometimes change the Speed ever so slightly n many times his acapellas are used the pitch always is. He was a kid up until about 95 tho. I’d say anyone under 21 could be called a kid. Listen to Let em Have It L which he recorded before he was 21 n it’s Pre Lifestylez n he doesn’t sound like that. I think he has the most iconic voice in existence tho.
I totally understand what you mean I actually get kinda upset instantly when I hear anytime his voice is Raised even +.05 pitch.

Yo pop much respect for this one my G, yo back in high school we used stay up every Thursday nights 1am till 5am to tape the stretch n bobbito show so we’d have the new hot beats for Friday n the weekend in 95 I taped the legendary freestyle with L n Jay-Z listened to it live it had much more of impact hearing back then cuz competition was fierce, but L used to be up there all the time killing it, he was in my opinion better than anybody out at the time… he deserves more light.. RIP BIG L… ✌🏻 POP A LOT!!
