I left school in 1959 and worked for a short while in a furniture shop called Traceys in Charlotte Street. It was located on the corner where the Galaxy phone shop is now. So long ago that it was even before the Tricorn Centre was built.
The old Debenhams store which has now closed used to be a department store called Allders. Before that it was a department store called Landports. The district in Portsmouth where the city centre shops are is called Landport, which is where the store got its name from. The store opposite Wilko's with the yellow shutters over the windows was a well known local landmark store called 'U-Need-Us'. It was a fancy dress/party/joke shop that sadly closed in 2019 after being open for nearly 96 years.
I used fo love going to Commercial Road in my late teens earlt 20s in the early 1980s with my friends. We would go for cuppa in The Richmond Grill Woolies. A cafe called Pepinos in Charlotte Street and Charlottes Super Store. Then i got a job. I went to commercial recently to Samuels to purchase a new watch and cokld not beleive hiw deserted Commercial Road was even at 10am. So sad to this halpening to Commercial Road.
Been over 16 years since I last walked through Commercial Road...possibly closer to 18...looks familiar...but not. Was born in Portsmouth..and lived within half mile of Commercial Road at one point.
Lovely here !! Thanks to all you UK tax payers ! We came over here on a dinghy from Dieppe ! We are very well looked after by you're N h s . We have a lovely gated residence too !! With 24 hour security !! We use the gym which is within . Lovely food as well . Plus £570 .oo each Per month living expenses !!! So once again big thankyou !! Wounderfull England ( think it's called England ?? )
The bit of water in between is called Portcreek. With a lot of effort and a strong wind you could almost spit across it. So TECHNICALLY an island but not exactly an ocean away .... :-)
My old city, love Portsmouth, used to live in Portsmouth during 1980s, lots changed, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching.
I love it when people watch videos of our beloved Pompey.

I remember when that part of Pompey was the place to be, it used to be heaving, it used to have some great shops and market too!
Was a great place to shop, but not anymore.
So glad I left. No regrets! What an uninspirng city centre. I really hope the busker didn't give up his day job!
Nice, i used to live in Gosport, and would cycle to commercial road every weekend with my best mate P Windybank to visit HMV. Great memories.
Hope you visit Gosport again.👍

Last time I was in the centre of Portsmouth was 20 years ago and it does not seem to have changed much.
It hasn't changed much in 30 years. If anything it looks even more run down. Suppose Gunwharf took business away.
That busker needs to retire. Bloody hell what a racket.

I grew up in Somerstown, a 5 minute walk into Comical Road.

Great vid but drop that terrible background tune
Don’t see many brown folks in Portsmouth,
Yeah it's pretty much a white British majority. There are a number of Asian students who study/stay and a decent percentage of White Europeans.
@@leoneomike thanks Mike, good to know. London become way too multicultural is doing my head in. Was thinking moving out .
It’s because it’s shit
@@teamehpchannel9614 does the town centre feel safe during the day. Or does it get rowdy.
@@leoneomike Is it a nice place to live ?
If Portsmouth is island then how do people go out of it
It has 3 bridges connecting it to the mainland. The middle bridge is practically all concrete so its more or less attached.
@@leoneomike oh okay

Meh. Reminds me of Watford High Street combined with a bit of Worthing .
Watford High Street is thriving.
