Roland SH-01A - That classic SH 101 Sound!

- In this video we've synced up the SH-01A with the Boutique TR-08.
We used the SH-01a's onboard sequencer function to create a basic sequence as the backbone to explore the Sh-01a's sounds.
The set up is about as simple as it gets, with the TR-08 taking charge of the tempo. You'll notice that half way through we did a quick "Start Stop" to get the SH-01a's sequencer back on the right downbeat.
This isn't because the Sh-01a drifted, we just hadn't started on the right beat in the first place. Not that you can really tell.
Like the whole Boutique range from Roland, the SH-01a is a fantastic recreation of the original. You also now get the ability to play chords! It also has polyphony and unison, (which sounds amazing!)
Of course size can be an issue with the Boutique range, but once you let that go and just listen to what comes out you wont be at all disappointed.

+Modestoney The market is already flooded with one oscillator analogue monosynths. You can even get two and three oscillator original design monos and inexpensive polys. But after a big disappointment with the Deepmind 12, my Behringer synth days are over.
+G Well, i´ve heard very good things about them and definitely going to check them out myself - synths are different, just because there are affordable mono synths on the market doesn´t mean that every aspect is covered.

Isn't the sync lagging?
Just a slow attack setting I think. it is possible there is lag, we didn't notice lag at the time of recording.
Yes it is. But the reason is that only 15 steps were programmed instead of 16 (we see the counter at 16, but that step is never programmed). So the sequence lags one step behind with each bar played.

Sounds good, but I miss the days when people demoed synths by playing the keys. The short gated blips you get with a sequencer don't give a comprehensive demonstration of how the synth sounds. :)
We agree completely, and in future demos we'll be working with a Keyboard player to offer a better example of the playability of the instrument.

Who ever made Techno with the SH-101 by playing the keys though? This is how it’s done.
@@XanderEwald That’s my point though. There’s way more to synths than techno or other types of electronic dance music.
The lower end has some similarities at certain points, but the mid to high range is just a completely different synth sound, and the behavior of the faders in relation to the behavior of the SH-101s are just completely different all throughout. I guess people claiming previous ownership of SH-101s saying these two instruments are identical must have either gone deaf or could never hear in the first place.

This one is actually better and improved 4 voice poly synth vs mono synth the original.Technologies advances and new gear is being produced in smaller format,cause musicians need more of it and don't have space to put big,clumsy synths and huge drum machines.
I dont know... but, it s like copy original Picasso oil paint by acryl paint printed by printer... Its on canvas, it s solid colour... its this same motive, but it s Picasso? Who cares, sounds similar. I mean, today is better to buy some gear from Elektron /and similar young producers/ , because in next decades will be legendary their products...
You're adding nothing new to a very old discussion. Analog vs Digi-Analog. Original vs Clone. By now, everyone should have become tired of it. Let's just accept these things as they are and get over it.
