  • Over 50 million Americans live in food insecure households. 33 and a half million adults and 16.7 million children don't know where their next meal is coming from. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says one in six americans struggled with some form of hunger.
    On this edition of Inside Out we visited the NYC Rescue Mission that feeds the hungry year round, as well as a community that was brought together in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in New York. We are also focusing on what many are calling the diminishing middle class and the rise of Income inequality and what it means for the future of our economy. We sat down for an interview with Dr. Steve Brier, a labor and social historian who teaches at the CUNY Graduate Center and at CUNY's Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies.

    A lot of interesting points but the program just didn't coalesce for me - not that that's really relevant. I love Joe Little's passion for helping people. I hate when people leave these mean spirited comments about how it's poor people's own fault basically. So what for Christ's sake? If someone is hungry, you feed them. It's not up to us to judge how they got there. The poor are not the enemy.

    You can't fish when there is no water and you can't work if you have no jobs. I know how hard it is to find a job!

    Middle class jobs are in other countries because the boss doesn't want to pay employees money. I don't have to pay minimal wage when I can pay someone else in a different country five cents an hour with no benifits. It's business.

    These comments are dumb af. In what way are these ppl winning? They have to get up and wait in lines for this little amount of food, they wear second hand clothes, I can honestly say I dont go through this. I can go to my kitchen and eat, I have clothes of my own, stop being so mean. I work and I am considered below the poverty line. You dont know everyones circumstance. If you ever find your way here I hope ppl dont hate you for it.

    what blows me away is that we had this hurricane sandy thing that happened, huge outpouring if support and donations and a benefit conert. yet for 5 yrs thousands upon thousands of families have been in the same boat of losing their homes and going homeless and not having food and where is the outpouring of support for that? These families have been having their own hurricane for 5 yrs, but since Sandy was seen on tv suddenly people care.

    To many people having to many children they can’t afford to raise on their own. See it in social services everyday. No job and having kids out of wedlock with multiple men. That is a huge problem people don’t want to address

    The city needs to take that sign up list, and build 10× the amount of affordable housing mixed between street homeless peoele getting their first place to live in years, working poor people who can't afford nyc rent and working less-poor who aren't quite middle class as the highest class suite so that a variety of levels of class can gain exposure to each other and communicate with one another like human beings and learn how to become successful!!!!

    So many people are employed and still can't afford a place to live. We need more housing options. Maybe the many vacant buildings and homes could be used.

    Part of the problem that isn't really mentioned is that there is a new class of wealthy people proliferating the country. Young techies, tik tokers, RUclipsrs, OnlyFans models, IG models and personalities, and others who make money from ad revenue online. This new class can afford to keep buying things when the middle and lower classes can't. This new class tends to buy a lot of the same stuff the middle class does, so that keeps prices higher than they would have been under the old class scheme of the 20th century.

    if a job can not pay a living wage, what is the excuse for that job existing? i really do not want to make a donation to subsidize a business person's payroll. go back to the low wage employer for a donation!

    • @robertjohnson4401

      Nick j He picked Donald Trump because he is probably the best known wealthy person he could think of. I don't think this was politically motivated or is blaming Trump for this situation.

    • @leannyngsdal5266
      @leannyngsdal5266 6 лет назад +1

      Nick j He picked dumb and trump because trump is the one who wants to end all forms of assistance for food, medical care and Hud housing. If you can't afford food you're going to be healthy. If you don't have a decent place to get shelter and rest. That will cause illness so then again you need medical care but you can't afford it. It becomes a vicious cycle. Trump has no idea what it is like to go without food, shelter and medical care. He has had wealth all his life. Trump is the ads behind increasing numbers of poor people.

      When this video was made, Trump was just a ridiculously wealthy person in NYC. The point was that even a wealthy person would be welcome to get a meal at the Rescue Mission.

    For God's sake, unless they are disabled demand that they pick up litter, clear up the neighbourhood, help people carry shopping home, etc instead of handing out decades of free fricking food.

    The reason that this food program attracts mostly men is women are already taken care of by government programs and private funded programs. Many of these programs will not help men. That is why the homeless on the street are mostly men. The few women homeless on the street are just not taking advantage of the ubiquitous services available to them.
