Surviving on Minimum Wage | IN Close

  • Seattle has voted to boost its minimum wage to $15 an hour over time. The first increase takes the minimum wage to $11 an hour. But is that enough to live on in this expensive city? We profile a young barista, a temporary worker and a grocery store clerk to drill down into what it takes to stretch minimum wage to a living wage, especially with housing taking such a big chunk out of the budget. We also interview a UW professor who has created an alternative to the federal minimum wage that is more realistic and the head of a company that has already boosted its minimum wage to $15.
    IN Close airs Thursdays at 7pm on KCTS 9.

      Yeah, but for some of us, it took more loads (squirts) than other people,
      and it may have taken more loads to make our brothers and sisters and
      parents. I have liked to joke around with people about it in my past. I
      made a comment to a woman about it to a woman in my past who's
      husband wouldn't give her a divorce, who made lots of money at the
      time in another country. She wanted me to do her and I said no because
      she said although her husband would NEVER give her a divorce, she
      said he was very dangerous if he ever caught her with another man..
      So anyway, I just joked with her about how many squirts it took to make
      each of her 3 children. And, she actually told me what she remembered.
      Please remember though, if anybody ever gives you a hard time for no
      reason, just tell them they are no more important than you are because
      their parents had sex just like your parents did, and that they came from
      a squirt or a load, just like you did. They are so lost for words that they
      don't know how to reply. Haha. Take care and thanks for responding.

Unless they kick you out or you have issues, just stay with them. Its ridiculous that young ppl think being with ppl who love and support you is something to be ashamed of and so they must be independent ASAP even when they can't afford it.

      @@kawazaki23 Software engineering is a great job, $70k+ a year in salary, great benefits, and very stable. The world runs on tech, engineers are her to stay! lol. Plus, in this time of covid, when many people are forced to go into the office or loose their jobs, I'm able to work from home safely. I have tons of flexibility on when I want to start my work and when I want to end. I use to go to the gym at 5 am but since gyms are closed, I sleep in because I don't have to worry about having to drive into the office. During lunch, I go for a long walk or workout and it's easy to do working from home. Plus, many tech companies in general are adopting to work from home even after the covid prob is over so many software engineers will be able to stay at home, which gives more flexibility to do what we want to do. I went to school for it, I started as an architecture major but switched right when the tech crazy was starting with mobile phones and I'm so glad I did. BU twith the internet, you can learn to program from home for free, there are tons of tutorials out there. Plus, one of the big perks of software engineering is you can create your own applications and sell them for money. I also create mobile apps on the side to earn extra money from, hoping one day to make it big with that and not have to work for a company. lol

    Holy shit, $11 an hour? Damn, ditch the house and share a 1-bedroom apartment with someone else. I mean... holy hell.
    And the food she's buying is beyond name brand-- it's the expensive stuff. That cereal is at least $4.00 where I live, and no doubt it's at least $2 more in Seattle. I can tell from the packaging of the bread that it's either Udi's or Rudi's, so she's gluten-free. Ditch the bread and buy some other food with with that $6.00-7.00 dollars! And oranges are classed by the USDA as one of the most expensive fruits you can buy, and those looked like mandarins, even, which are more expensive to fill up on. Sheesh, buy apples and bananas instead. Those razors looked pretty nice, too. Get the bargain ones to save money.
    I could buy a lot with $70 a week for food, even in Seattle.

    • @GhoulishGal
      @GhoulishGal 8 лет назад +34

      I sort of agree. It said she made what $2,200 a month? That's honestly a lot to me. I make $600 a month from my job. And then my husband brings home a good amount. We live comfortably. But I agree. She should shop smarter. If you have a gluten allergy fine. But Id she made smarter choices shed save lots of money. Like you said. I could honestly stretch $50 to make a week of meals.

    • @milktea4270
      @milktea4270 8 лет назад +23

      GhoulishGal Same. I think the $2,200 was actually the rent for the house she was living in, with two or three other people splitting the cost with her, which comes out to be around $550-700 for each person. I did a quick apartment search for 1-bedroom apartments in Seattle, and while they're pricey, I found a several that were no more than $900. She could at least rent one of those with another person and her rent would be cut down by $100 or more if there are other apartments that have a smaller rent (doubt it).
      Or, or, or, she could just not live right in Seattle. In fact, since she doesn't have much, she could probably move to just outside Seattle, where rent for 1-bedrooms will be even cheaper.
      She could also put the money for that bread towards something cheaper and more sustainable, like eggs. I'd gladly take a $3.80 dozen eggs over a small loaf of $7.00 bread.

The United States is the wealthiest country in history and has the poor paid so little on order to compel them to work everyday or else they'll fall into debt or worse. Other first world countries have universal health, free college, and higher minimum wages than the US. +awarebrah It's honestly so frustrating for younger generations such as myself who will find themselves fending for themselves in a few years. My family is by no means "wealthy", but I still understand that this world is never fair, and you don't get anywhere by hating those who were born with silver spoons in their mouth. With that said, people in situations such as these, I just feel like they lack that same mentality. Everything in this world trickles down to capitalist ideals and those who work the hardest can POTENTIALLY gain the most, and then you have the negative side of capitalism where corruption and greed can rule a modern society. Yet, by no means does that corruption or greed stop people from putting themselves in better situations. It might make it more difficult, but anything is possible. Unfortunately, there's not an instant change to such a negative and dependent mentality and the fact that there's a very good chance I will join much of the population that has to pay for those in lesser situations whom don't always act responsibly once they get that assistance is beyond fucking annoying.

    When I spoke with people in Australia it was interesting on their take about employment. The minimum wage was $18 AUD then. They were telling me in places like Sydney and Gold Coast employers were sometimes paying $10 AUD or more premium (or $28 AUD) to get workers in places like retail stores in shopping malls. There was that much of a shortage. The only way employers will keep workers is to figure out a way to pay them premiums above minimum wage so they can live and pay bills.

    "Minimum Wage" was NEVER intended to be a "family wage", if you start a family prior to being financially secure you are in for a struggle, that is not the "system's" fault. People often loosely throw around the term "unplanned pregnancy" which really means two adults who are to irresponsible to use birth control and now want others to pay their way( typically for a lifetime).

By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.

      You say I'm out of touch with reality yet you're proposing a $23 an hour minimum wage? wtf, that's over 47k per year. Why should a no skilled worker flipping burgers make that much? With that line of thinking you're just going to increase unemployment and further hurt the poor, which will cause more of them to rely on government assistance.

    • @Bilbus7
      @Bilbus7 7 лет назад +7

      *****
      No, increasing the minimum wage is what's going to hurt the poor, especially those that don't even have a job. Yes, it will possibly help some workers, but there is the chance that their workers get hours cut, or the requirements for that simple job go up. and that's funny that you call me a shitbag for wanting to end minimum wage even though I have good intentions.
      Your scenario is assuming a lot. It's assuming that Sally can't find another job? It's assuming that there are going to be so many others like the immigrants and teenagers that she won't be able to ever find a job? Is that what you're getting to? Well, first of all, Sally isn't forced to work that job for $5, or $2. She can easily go find another job that pays better. Besides, If she doesn't find another job, shouldn't she be grateful that she even has the opportunity to work in the first place? And I didn't nor did you say that employers can just fire someone for no reason. I feel like you're limiting your thinking here.
      It also might be a bad move to hire teenagers that want jobs at $3 an hour because they may be unproductive, low skilled, and not be as invested into the job like Sally because they don;t have the same responsibilities. You're also making the immigrants look like the bad guys because they are coming into this country seeking a better life. Are you referring to illegal immigrants? If so, that's a different issue.
      And you say the capitalist wants to maximize profit as if that's a terrible thing. If it wasn't for him/her, there would be no business in the first place.
      And like you said, it doesn't make sense to impoverish the workers that help make your business a success. So wouldn't that mean that they would offer higher wages instead of this shitty $2 like you're saying? They would offer wage as high as an employee would take, which says a lot.
      In the end, both the employer and the employees should have the freedom to make their own choices regarding who to hire, where to work, and how much to pay/earn. Minimum wage is simply forcing employees to pay a certain amount for their workers, which limits freedom significantly. I don't consider that justice.

      It was a stand in/stock image of an item to illustrate for viewers (who more than likely can afford to purchase that item) what people on minimum wage have to work with on a weekly basis. Also, as a low wage (but not minimum wage) worker, I often purchase that brand of laundry detergent or the store equivalent thereof. I have extremely sensitive skin, so I have to be careful with what laundry detergent I purchase (the cheaper brands are often loaded with dyes and perfumes - both of which result in massive itchy patches on my skin) and honestly, it's actually cheaper in the long run because it's more concentrated than the cheaper brands, so you use less of it per load.
      Also, everyone bragging about how little they spend on groceries per week: really? What do you guys eat? Air and sunlight? I'm a single person and even just buying groceries for myself, I easily spend about $35-40 a week on groceries, even with coupons, loyalty card savings, etc. Of course, I happen to live in a more expensive area (yes, I could move to a cheaper location, but this is where the jobs are).

      Going to art school was the best thing for me. Art school is awesome. I don't care what nobody say. I learned cool things and went to fun places and camping in the woods creating baskets from the tree I cut. Many people keep saying stay at home to learn art, but there are a lot of thing you don't learn at home that are taught at school. There are some techniques that take longer online or to learn on your own, but I learn faster, short and better techniques I learned from professionals who currently work in the industry.
      Connections are really important and you can't that being at home. I know some of the top and big people in the animation industry and some happen to my friends that I talk to every once in the while. Being at one of the top art school for animation has taught me a lot. I learned a lot from taking philosophy, science art history etc classes. My art skills has also branch out as well. There were things I never knew I could do that I enjoy doing. Going to art school has taught me to take risk as a creative artist and take it to the next level.
      I have the knowledge to create films by the industry standards. You can't learn by industry standards on something at home. Even though I just finished the animation industry, I have one more semester to go to get my degree in filmmaking. I am currently planning my internship at an animation studio in Tokyo, Japan for experience and all studios there only hire those with a college degree or some kind of certification showing that you learned something somewhere. f I did't go to art school, I probably wouldn't be closer to my goal being an animator and working at an industry/freelancing.
      Skilled artist can make a lot of money especially in Hollywood working on blockbuster motion picture film or animation. Hollywood needs the artist because it's the artist that makes the films look awesome and good. Hollywood are good at making film especially the sci-fi, action and fantasy genre because the artist are the ones that brings the imagination and the world of fantasy to life. There are more artist in the movie credits than anything. If one is serious about art and wants to make a living doing art and have a passion for art, than art school is for those people and they should go!
      If art is only a hobby, than those people can stay home and perfect their art by learning off the internet and it will take longer to get a job. Someone who has a degree in whatever art like animation who went to school and got an education with and really good portfolio will be pick over the person who doesn't have a degree in animation, didn't go to school with a good portfolio. I hear people say this a lot and its true.

Yes, kids need some short time support once they "leave the nest" but I know too many people who made a good life for themselves by taking whatever job they could get, saving all they could, even if it wasn't a lot, and they are now solid middle class folks. Example? I have two daughters, and both of them worked a job as soon as they were old enough, despite the fact that my wife and I had plenty of money and they could have lived at home forever. My older daughter works at a nanny service company, my younger daughter is working as a cashier and both are doing well. Their secrets? Don't spend money (credit card) you don't have, work hard, get along with your boss (from thence comes many good things) and hook up with a friend to share expenses for rent, food, etc. My father grew up in the Great Depression, and he worked any and every job he could find, including one selling mens shirts. He ended up being a VP with Xerox (back when that meant something). He never gave up, always worked hard, at work and at home, and was frugal.
