Honestly you're a lifesaver in the vtuber/streaming community. Usually when people wanna get into this kind of stuff or pick up any new skill they gotta do tons of research and look around and try to figure things out, but all aspiring streamers/vtubers have to do is litterally just find your youtube channel and they're golden cuz you got all the info and cover all the topics
Even vroid has some nice tricks to make the models look nice. You can even make look somewhat 2D. Luckily I have experience with 3D because of VRchat. Unity and blender are a lifesaver. It of course, you gotta know what you're doing.
I just watched two of your videos straight and they were genuinely helpful! I like that you covered the pro/cons and equipment needed in your other video. When looking at other vids they were more full of advice and often lengthy. I like that you got to the point. I'm probably going to binge more of your vids and take notes.
For anyone on the 2D Vtuber path: It is possible (at least for me) to take your time rigging if you download the free version of Live2D cubism *first.* You have the option to start the PRO free trial at any time in case your model is very detailed and you've already reached the limits from the free version. By then, you possibly got most of the work done in the free version and you'd just be using the PRO free trial for finishing touches, polishing, etc.; just do your research on how the PRO features work ahead of time so that you know what you are doing.
Another important factor is vr chat. It allows fans to see and interact directly with your avatar, hangout, talk, etc... It's really amazing and in vr makes your avatar feel almost like a real person people can visit. So while I love 2d, I really love what 3d can bring you going beyond youtube and twitch

I started streaming in February and I stream with Face Cam BUT the more I discover the beauty of VTubing and the FUN aspect of the NO LIMIIT to creativity with these models, THE MORE I FALL IN LOVE WITH IT! I also love learning new styles of art and learning LIVE2D definitely fits that category!!! Now, I've recently started to do PNGTubing, I realize that this is the BEST way for me to start towards a future with VTubing because I'm still trying to explore what my character should look like and PNGTubing will help me build what my character design will look like once I start rigging it! I can't draw whatsoever but I love the aesthetic of 2d more and it gives me the freedom to choose a more fantastical artstyle rather than an anime one. Just gotta find an artist and rigger
I'm both a 2D illustrator and a 3D student experienced experienced in the whole process aside from rigging and animation. The problem is those two things are important. Without the skill of rigging in both I still can't do it alone.

I would say it looks like you're comapring both differently. 3D you focused on non-artist and free stuff but there's also free programs, free, model bases and such for 2D I would say that they both can cost a lot or be cheaper depends on how much knowledge you have or how good you want to the vtuber model be. But I also agree. the 3D one is better if you don't know everything and you don't want to commission an artist ^^. (btw sorry for my bad english)
Wish I knew about the vroid thing a while back. I made my model from scratch using blender... rigged it, textured it, did all that stuff. It was the first blender project I ever made, and it really was a learning opportunity.
The amazing thing is now you can start with VRoid and apply blender knowledge to your VRoid/ upload it to blender and do add ins 🥰 glad you learned a ton. Thanks for sharing your story!
As much as I’ve always been a 2D artist, i think ill go with (at least start with) 3D, not really because its “easier” but cause ive been wanting to learn Blender, and I would love hand tracking ^^ great vid, actually answered this question completely for me! :)
I'm a little late to the party here but I still wanna put in my two cents, 3D vtubing has a lower barrier to entry yes, but you can still put in all that same time investment that you would in a 2D model, and make a really great looking 3D model with unique affects and abilities, for instance, a couple of models I worked on can do things like take off and put on goggles, tie up their hair into a different style, put on glasses, or take out weaponry. If you're able to make 3D models from scratch, you can get even MORE crazy with it. I feel like using Vroid is the equivalent to taking still images of characters and just photo shopping their parts into separate pieces for Live2D. So honestly, it really does come down to your skillset and your knowhow. For instance, if you're more well versed in modeling and using programs like Unity and/or you really want the leap motion hand tracking, 3D is the way to go. However, if you're an artist and can draw well, making a good live2D avatar can be a great way to not only do what you're already good at, but approach drawing from a different perspective via drawing your characters in parts then piecing them together. Heck, you don't even have to make a Vtuber avatar! With Live2D, you can even just use it as a way to bring your drawings to life by putting them in cool looping animations~

So if you want 3D I recommend picking up blender and learning how to model from scratch. If you want 2D you can still draw your character in any stile and use live2D cubism 🥰
I'm currently a 3D Vtuber. I'd say I'd love to do 2D since I can actually integrate my art style into my avatars. But I cannot rig for life and I'm broke af so 3D it is X'D
as for the more expression as well as how pleasing to the eye it is, that can carry widely, you can have some extremely beautiful and expressive 3d models if you know what you're doing. I've stayed away from vroid studio and my avatar looks amazing, the issue is, is that it take a lot of skill to get them looking amazing, I use 3d because I also play a lot of VR games and do a lot of 3d modelling stuff, and like to use my avatar in said games, like beatsaber and VRChat, so I know how to make it look amazing as the VRM materials are more robust than vroid can utilize, I'm just sad that 3d is looked down upon because a lot of people don't know how to import vrm into 3d modelling suits like blender or places like unity for in depth material work,
I do draw and ive been working on mine for live2d but...ive done something wrong... so it cant move at all. I tried restarting... but still no luck...So today I downloaded Vtube Studio for 3d vtuber....and its also taking forever...mainly cause my characters skin is like a patched up dolls and different colors... on my drawing it was already drawn but on this...im having to edit the heck outta this 3d body. I had to save it and stop though Sadly just sitting for long periods of time hurts my back...Standing is worse... Im starting to question why im even doing this...
I am researching which kind of V-Tuber I would like to be... I kinda gave myself no choice but to be a 2D V-Tuber in order for my character to have a bird on her head. Yeah, I put a bird on her head (I love birds). I am an amateur artist, so this will be a fun adventure haha. I am willing to learn how to rig a module. I can't wait to start V-Tubing, plus I'll even be using my own art!

No Worries Saku Great Question! So I would say, After you get your model drawn, and rigged. Then You would need a program like prprlive or VTube Studio to run your models movement. Then you need to choose a streaming software liek Streamlabs OBS or OBS to run your character through for recording or streaming. Hope this helps! For those of you who may not be artists yourselves but still want to go the 2D route, there are people out there that you can commission to do these things for you, even all the way up to the rigging process. Of course, you would have to be willing to put in a bit more money to do so, but if you have your heart set on it then I say it's worth the investment.
I ended up taking the monetary plunge to commission someone with a super unique art style to make a Live 2d model for me, because sadly personally I just feel like 3d models end up looking mostly the same. Especially because of the fact that most 3d models are made with the same exact software, they don't really capture the sense of 'uniqueness' that I feel from 2d models. They're not bad though, so anyone who actually has artistic skills and/or doesn't want to spend 500+ dollars like I decided to should probably go with 3d.
Saying 3D models look the same because of software is like saying that all people using Photoshop must draw the same. When you’re using a more hands-off program such as Blender or Maya (as opposed to VROID), your ability to model is largely independent from what the program offers.
I'm from HK and wanted to be a vtuber, I have clipstudio and considering prprlive (If this actually works, idk), I originally thought of making a 3d model, but I feel like 2d looks better, maybe I should put more time to learn 2d stuff before starting to become a vtuber XD. Oh, and also I'm a boy, I think that male vtubers are not as attractive or popular as female, and HK vtubers are not popular in HK, and I'm still thinking whether I should invest time and money for doing this... I like the fact that now even with 3d vtubers. You can make it look 2d So it's a win win. The brand new Vroid stable has tons of stuff you can use to make a 2d looking 3d models . But you have to be good with your cel shade.
I think i'd go with a 3D one but i don't really know how to model or how much time it would take, i think all the time i have right now is 1-4 months to make my model so,

OK, so I want to be a VTuber. I am a graphic designer and have some skills at drawing, but feel like I'm better at drawing objects than characters/people. I don't have a drawing tablet, but am good at using the pen tool in Photoshop and Illustrator. I started making a 3D model, but didn't get very far (I mostly worked on the hair). I'm also better at taking already existing things and either re-creating them or changing them to what I need. I'm not great and being able to visualize what I want. Should I keep trying to work on that 3D model, or should I start trying to draw something and trace it in Illustrator to rig it up for a 2D model?
After watching this video, I suppose I will use 3D model when I don't have time and use 2D when I have a lot of time (I hope that there isn't something like you can't be both) and is it possible to mix 2D and 3D?

This is still something that boggles my mind. Why does a live2d model costs more than a 3D model? I mean, on 3d models you have to use (at least) 8 range facial motion (and there are some models that require 52 shape range motion). Other 3d models go as far as 162 calibrated facial expressions. I've seen people charing $10 for additional facial motion, do the math ($10 isn't even the real market price, more like $25 PER additional facial expression). So yeah, I think Hololive models are responsible for such high increase in price, and nothing else. The same (2 or 3 dedicated weeks) that take to complete a fully functional 3D model, is around the time you'd also need to completely finish a Hololive level Live 2D model with 1 cloth swap, emotions and physics.... ...sooo... Still boggles my mind.
It depends, cause if someone is making you a model in VRoid it may be a lot cheaper compared to 2D. I also think that the markets are just completely different depending on who you commission. Some artists charge $5 for the same type of thing while another might charge $300. It depends on so many factors. The name of the artist could also increase the price if they are well known.
With 2D the artist has to draw like every strand of hair etc etc on separate layers which is very time consuming and on top of that ofc you have to pay for their skills
As a neckless 2d vtuber myself, start with vroid. You'll thank me, but if you wanna start with 2d, there are a lot of tutorials out there. Have a good day everyone!

As someone who just made their 3D model and is not artsy, it's way easier and cheaper to start out with. If you are like me and can't draw for diddly squat then go looking for someone to commission prepare to be disappointed yet understanding of how expensive 2D models can be xD GL if ever you try to get into the 2D models. I want to but...oof that money

I'm currently a 3D Vtuber. I'd say I'd love to do 2D since I can actually integrate my art style into my avatars. But I cannot rig for life and I'm broke af so 3D it is X'D

as for the more expression as well as how pleasing to the eye it is, that can carry widely,
you can have some extremely beautiful and expressive 3d models if you know what you're doing. I've stayed away from vroid studio and my avatar looks amazing, the issue is, is that it take a lot of skill to get them looking amazing, I use 3d because I also play a lot of VR games and do a lot of 3d modelling stuff, and like to use my avatar in said games, like beatsaber and VRChat, so I know how to make it look amazing as the VRM materials are more robust than vroid can utilize,
I'm just sad that 3d is looked down upon because a lot of people don't know how to import vrm into 3d modelling suits like blender or places like unity for in depth material work,
I do draw and ive been working on mine for live2d but...ive done something wrong... so it cant move at all. I tried restarting...
but still no luck...So today I downloaded Vtube Studio for 3d vtuber....and its also taking forever...mainly cause my characters skin is like a patched up dolls and different colors... on my drawing it was already drawn but on this...im having to edit the heck outta this 3d body.
I had to save it and stop though

I am researching which kind of V-Tuber I would like to be... I kinda gave myself no choice but to be a 2D V-Tuber in order for my character to have a bird on her head. Yeah, I put a bird on her head (I love birds). I am an amateur artist, so this will be a fun adventure haha. I am willing to learn how to rig a module. I can't wait to start V-Tubing, plus I'll even be using my own art!
You could always learn more about 3D if you ever want to switch. But that is awesome! Owls are my favorite kind of bird. Good luck with everything :D

So, in a way: 3D is better for starting vtubers/those who wish to interact more/those who are testing to see if they want to be a vtuber, while 2D is more personal for intermediate/experienced/prefer more advanced expressions/do it for a living? No Worries Saku Great Question! So I would say, After you get your model drawn, and rigged. Then You would need a program like prprlive or VTube Studio to run your models movement. Then you need to choose a streaming software liek Streamlabs OBS or OBS to run your character through for recording or streaming. Hope this helps! For those of you who may not be artists yourselves but still want to go the 2D route, there are people out there that you can commission to do these things for you, even all the way up to the rigging process. Of course, you would have to be willing to put in a bit more money to do so, but if you have your heart set on it then I say it's worth the investment.

I ended up taking the monetary plunge to commission someone with a super unique art style to make a Live 2d model for me, because sadly personally I just feel like 3d models end up looking mostly the same. Especially because of the fact that most 3d models are made with the same exact software, they don't really capture the sense of 'uniqueness' that I feel from 2d models. They're not bad though, so anyone who actually has artistic skills and/or doesn't want to spend 500+ dollars like I decided to should probably go with 3d.
The reason lots of 3D look the same is because 90% of people are using VROID Studio/ But I agree with you, 2D has a really nice aesthetic.
Saying 3D models look the same because of software is like saying that all people using Photoshop must draw the same.
When you’re using a more hands-off program such as Blender or Maya (as opposed to VROID), your ability to model is largely independent from what the program offers.
I'm from HK and wanted to be a vtuber, I have clipstudio and considering prprlive (If this actually works, idk), I originally thought of making a 3d model, but I feel like 2d looks better, maybe I should put more time to learn 2d stuff before starting to become a vtuber XD. Oh, and also I'm a boy, I think that male vtubers are not as attractive or popular as female, and HK vtubers are not popular in HK, and I'm still thinking whether I should invest time and money for doing this... A bit discouraging situation XD

The brand new Vroid stable has tons of stuff you can use to make a 2d looking 3d models . But you have to be good with your cel shade.

OK, so I want to be a VTuber. I am a graphic designer and have some skills at drawing, but feel like I'm better at drawing objects than characters/people. I don't have a drawing tablet, but am good at using the pen tool in Photoshop and Illustrator. I started making a 3D model, but didn't get very far (I mostly worked on the hair).
I'm also better at taking already existing things and either re-creating them or changing them to what I need. I'm not great and being able to visualize what I want.
Should I keep trying to work on that 3D model, or should I start trying to draw something and trace it in Illustrator to rig it up for a 2D model?
It seems like 3D Would be better for you because you said you are good at re-creating and changing things which VRoid Studio is great for!

This is still something that boggles my mind. Why does a live2d model costs more than a 3D model? I mean, on 3d models you have to use (at least) 8 range facial motion (and there are some models that require 52 shape range motion). Other 3d models go as far as 162 calibrated facial expressions. I've seen people charing $10 for additional facial motion, do the math ($10 isn't even the real market price, more like $25 PER additional facial expression). So yeah, I think Hololive models are responsible for such high increase in price, and nothing else. The same (2 or 3 dedicated weeks) that take to complete a fully functional 3D model, is around the time you'd also need to completely finish a Hololive level Live 2D model with 1 cloth swap, emotions and physics....

It depends, cause if someone is making you a model in VRoid it may be a lot cheaper compared to 2D. I also think that the markets are just completely different depending on who you commission. Some artists charge $5 for the same type of thing while another might charge $300. It depends on so many factors. The name of the artist could also increase the price if they are well known.
With 2D the artist has to draw like every strand of hair etc etc on separate layers which is very time consuming and on top of that ofc you have to pay for their skills
As a neckless 2d vtuber myself, start with vroid. You'll thank me, but if you wanna start with 2d, there are a lot of tutorials out there. Have a good day everyone!

As someone who just made their 3D model and is not artsy, it's way easier and cheaper to start out with. If you are like me and can't draw for diddly squat then go looking for someone to commission prepare to be disappointed yet understanding of how expensive 2D models can be xD GL if ever you try to get into the 2D models.
