Fun Fact: the character Max was originally intended to be a fat Russian man, but Tom Cruise told the Director Brian De Palma it would be cool if they hired for Vanessa Redgrave… And she was happy to do it because she wasn’t offered many action movie roles. She one of the best things about the movie.
It's always fun in these kinds of movies where you get that character that just doesn't fit in but somehow makes it more realistic.
That was an absolutely phenomenal choice to cast her in this role. She was so calm and collected throughout the movie, except when it was time to actually start the transfer...that was the only time she really started showing any sort of anxiety. And I love how they connected her to the newer movies with Vanessa Kirby.
Both Vanessa is really2 good cast..
Brilliant casting she was elegant and professional while being just playful enough with Ethan to be believable that she was in charge without it feeling forced.
This is one of the few franchises that has actually gotten better with each movie imo. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to the sequels!
except 2, 2 was worse than 1, but yeah
This was the only good one imo
Agree
Damn that’s a hot take
@@istvankeri6688it was beloved at the time, but was HIGHLY flawed.
Many forget that despite its high quality, many classic MI fans hated MI1 because it made Phelps the villain.
3 sort of built off 1 but reset the tone, and 4 cemented the formula of it being an increasingly expanding team action/suspense IP with real stunts and solid writing.
But what 2 established is that Hunt is a virtuoso action/ninja/spy with unflappable nerves, unshakable ethics, and who hardly ever kills but always risks it all to save the innocent and give second chances... essentially what if Captain America was James Bond.
I love John Woo, but MI2 and faceoff are stains on his reputation.
Hey, Vicky! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES and its 1980s revival both starring Peter Graves.
Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself!
The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace!
What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate.
Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, Phelps' September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene!
The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made!
The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points.
DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip.
The second film is every inch a JOHN WOO movie and the third film is every inch a J.J. ABRAMS movie.
You saved me a whole bunch of typing. Nice job.
So glad so many reactors are getting into the MI series. The series is just amazing and manages to top itself almost every time! Also helps knowing how crazy Tom is doing his own stunts, no matter how dangerous they are.
yes but he's a scientologist, so he's fucking insane anyway.
Since the serie only starts getting its tone at opus 3, MI1 & MI2 always feel very strange.
The famous theme song was done by Lalo Schifrin, who also did the Rush Hour films. Another example of his iconic music was for Bruce Lee’s greatest film, *Enter The Dragon* which turns 50 this month, and remains the standard for martial arts films and fight choreography. Speaking of Rush Hour, a young Jackie Chan also appears as a stuntman in it!
Rare to see Vkunia beginning one of the best action movie franchises ever!
The first MI movie is good, but they get better and better. 4-6 are just plain fantastic movies.
Misson Impossible gets even better when you consider that I came out in 1996, and it heavily inspired films such as The Bourne Identity, Ocean's Eleven, and many spy films that came after it.
Brian de Palma also did The Untouchables, terrific movie, worth reacting to, and I think Spielberg recommended him for the directing job to Tom Cruise when they lived next door (I'm a little lost there, but Cruise had mentioned picking de Palma to direct)
This series gets better as time goes on. You'll get to the point that you'll assume that everyone is wearing a mask, even if it's one of their own face.
You're in for a heart-punching ride, trust me.
One thing about this series: every film has a different atmosphere.
Just for those who are not aware, Mission: Impossible started as a tv-series in the late 60s to early 70s and was revived in the late 80s. And the theme was there right from the start.
Fun fact: This is an action movie starring Tom Cruise where he never even fires a gun. Highly unusual.
If you like spy movies, Ronin is incredible. Excellently written plot starring Robert DeNiro. It also features Jean Reno. It has some awesome car chases.
Welcome to one of the most well-known, well-made movie franchise!! You chose to accept this mission!
After M:I II, the sequels just get better. You have a lot of iconic moments to look forward to.
Mission Impossible: Vic posting the next Breaking Bad reaction
so real
i just started watching this series again myself. infinite rewatchability! glad you're watching. don't get discouraged if number 2 drops off a little bit, otherwise they keep getting better and better, so keep going through the series and especially the new one!
While the series does ultimately get better further down the line, I do have a real soft spot for this first film. It's the kind of film that gets better the more you watch it, all the plot twists and double crosses make it quite bewildering and confusing when you first watch it, but once you know what's going on the whole thing becomes so much more entertaining and enjoyable. I also appreciate how different this feels from the rest of the series, it's more like a grounded suspense thriller than the big explosive stunt-driven extravaganzas that the later films ended up being. Honestly, getting an absolute icon of cinema like Brian De Palma to direct this was an inspired move, it's such a fantastically well-directed film, coupled with an absolutely killer script; no disrespect to the later films, but none of them has had a line that goes as hard as "Kittridge, you've never seen me 'very upset'."
The next one is quite a big step down in quality, but after the third film it just keeps getting better and better with each new film. Really looking forward to seeing you react to the rest of the series, this is legitimately one of the best action series, and maybe even one of the best film series in general.
I completely agree. The first movie feels the most realistic of the franchise. The plot does involve twists and turns, but it's very linear compared to future plots. Of course the other movies involve action and heists and what not, but this movie really lays down one damn solid foundation to build the franchise on. I still think it's the best overall movie in the franchise, but they do improve. I'm rather partial to Rogue Nation, Fallout, and even Dead Reckoning (Part 1) although I do love anything from 3 and beyond. Agreed about MI:2 being a bit meh. It's not bad and it has a lot of action, but for me it's a bit corny and over the top and definitely stands out from the entire franchise and not in a good way.
It is also the more faithful of the original series. From here on they might just call this mission TC
The "First" Mission: Impossible was a TV series from 1966 to 1973. And later revived in 1988-1990. It was an ensemble cast where a team of specialists led by Jim Phelps ( Paul Graves ) would take on missions. Each member had a specialty like explosives, disguise, electronics, weapons, etc. and it was about the team not some over-paid ham actor. It was kinda like Columbo where you are trying to figure out what they are doing during the program. More cerebral, less quick quips and explosions.
Peter Graves.
Ethan and Kittridge WEREN'T working together.
Ethan stays on the phone long enough for Kittridge's team to track him to London, and then he sends Kittridge tickets for the train to ensure the team is on the train.
Ethan used the camera glasses at the end to clear himself and prove it was Jim all along.
Fun fact:
The antagonist Jim Phelps (played by Jon Voight) is meant to close the curtain on a previous field team leader of IMF whose name... you guessed it! Jim Phelps (played by Peter Graves 1988).
By the end of the film Ethan Hunt fully succeed the position declaring the show is now HIS.
This is the best action franchise ever. Let’s go to Watch the sequels (with Dead Reckoning 1) 😎
The Mission Impossible honestly got better as the sequels came.. All of em has it's charms and all of em are quite well directed as well as written
The start of an amazing film franchise here !!!!!
M:I is legit the most consistent franchise out there.
M:I 2 is a small misstep, but M:I 3 and onwards it's probably the best spy/action movie franchise ever.
M:I 2 is pretty good
The original MI was a tv-series from 1966 to 1973. It was followed by a reboot in 1988-1990.
They effectively invented the "fake set" trope.
favorite reviewer watching one of my favorite series. great job as always!!! this is perfect after completing the Dark Knight series.
Wooo! This rabbit hole is fun to explore. I hope you enjoy the series.
Yes!! Let's goooooo!! I saw this in the theater as a kid, it was wild.
The thing about ‘Mission: Impossible’ (at least the first one is that it IS an over-the-top action thriller, but it’s not ‘dumb and fun’, but remarkably ’smart, and fun.’ I’m a clever guy, but even I remember being impressed with how convoluted was the plot of this film.
Krieger is Jean Reno ( Leon: the professional , Godzilla (1998) )
31:58 In England approaching the channel tunnel that goes under water to France
23:28 What's double cool about him making the disk disappear and reappear is that it was actual slight-of-hand by Tom Cruise. It wasn't movie magic.
I saw this movie as it came out right in the middle of when the internet was really getting into people's homes and computers were starting to become commonplace and the tech at the time...., it was a good time to be young and into this stuff. This first one holds a special place for me.
Cool fact: Tom Cruise actually learned how to do that magic trick that fools Kreiger for the film.
I always forget that the first hacker in the movie is Emilio Esteves, never got why hes not credited for this lol
Cant wait until you get deep into the franchise, 3 -7 keep getting better and better. 2 has the most "love it or hate it" vibe
Still a fun watch, good stunts, gorgeous camera work... but it's practically a cartoon written by a 12 year old.
But it's one of those movies that's great when folding laundry. It's practically a 90s superhero movie.
- V, Tom Cruise was only 34 years old when this movie was released.
- Leon *and* Marcelus Wallace, from Pulp Fiction. Have you ever watched Pulp Fiction?
Wow, This movie came out 4 days after I was born. Thanks for the Info Vic!
What up V.
Late comment.
M:I is among many to hit television series of the 1960s Spy craze.
My introduction to M:I was the second series from the late 1980s that featured characters of the original series with newer characters.
Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer by
forming a company with Paula Wagner.
Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie.
This was 1 of 2 films for Cruise in 1996 (the other was Jerry Maguire).
This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat.
Thanks to this franchise, Cruise becomes a even bigger movie star and the consummate stunt performer we know today.
The legendary theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement.
Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did the new version for the 1st movie.
As reruns of the tv series resurged during the movie's success, Cruise definitely had a franchise.
Also there was tie-in media, the video game by Ocean and the M:I comic book series aka The Ethan Hunt Chronicles from Marvel.
I couldn't wait for more missions as an fan, coming soon and I chose to accept them all.
Love this series and your reaction! Also, fun fact that may have already been mentioned, the main villain was played by JON VOIGHT, ANGELINA JOLIE’S father, though they’re said to have a rocky relationship. You can see the resemblance once you know, though.
This movie was directed by Brian DePalma whom was also the director of Carrie, Blow Out and The Untouchables all of which are fantastic movies. He also made Dressed To Kill and Body Double which are very intense suspense films but not for everyone.
V: "I've always wanted to go to Prague..."
Me: "Clearly you've never seen the first two "Hostel" films."
The tunnel with the helicopter/train is the 'Channel Tunnel'.
It goes underneath the English Channel and connects The UK to France.
The security systems at Langley are not active while the operator is in the room.
Tom could already do that kind of magic before filming this movie.
The actor whose name you forgot is Jon Voight. Not only is he here in the first Mission Impossible movie, but he's also in Holes, National Treasure 1 and 2, and a lot of other stuff.
Fun reactions to the first Mission Impossible movie.
When you've seen all of the MI movies, it might be fun to check out the original tv show. :)
Emilio Estevez was arguably a bigger star at the time then Tom Cruise, and killing him in the first few minutes was nuts.
arguably not. Tom Cruise's movies of the 1980's were better known including among others, Risky Business, All the Right Moves, Top Gun, Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, Days of Thunder, A Few Good Men and The FIrm.
Emilio Estevez notable appearances in the same era were The Breakfast Club, Young Guns, St Elmo's FIre and Maximum Overdrive, Mighty Ducks franchise and the first Loaded Weapon.
Between Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, Tom Cruise did Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, the first Jack Reacher film, then spends three years making Top Gun 2 following the Mummy, Mission Impossible; Fallout, and the second Jack Reacher film.
Emilio has done more producing/directing than acting through the 1990's/2000's including mainstream popular crime/police procedural shows among others.
@@andrewmurray1550Fair enough. But. I will plant my flag on the fact that killing Estevez in the opening set the movie up for it's "no one is safe" vibe .
There's two more left? Who's going to make it? Is ving rames going to make it to the end, or do they kill him at the end of part 1? I don't put it past these movies to leave anyone standing.
I cant wait for Schindler's list
Jim Phelps was a character that carried over from the original tv series.
Excited for this series!!
I miss the old Mission impossibles where it did not have to be action action explotion action stunt action, but with a storry that keept the movie alive
'He's so young here.' for a guy 5 months younger than I, who I am sure saw the original tv series like I did.
Saw this in theaters at 13. I was STOKED. Haha
Those tails lookin' boomin, finally MI-films are coming. You're going to love Rogue Nation btw, freaking awesome
Oh Jean Reno (Leon) and Ving Rhames (Luther in this movie) are both great in this movie. Probably the best two side characters :)
"they are gonna fall in love"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was waiting for someone to take off their face and actually be Lt. Frank Drebin. V’s reaction to that would be … *chef’s kiss*
@11:00 when I saw this in the theatre, the people who I saw it with noted the only murders Ethan committed during the movie were the fish, and some random guy walking by muttered "Tom Cruise: killer of fish." 😄
the second one is a lower quality MI movie, but it still can be fun, and the rest in the series are all fantastic!
"This must have been so much fun to do!" I dunno, Tom hit his head on the floor a BUNCH lol until he put some coins in his shoes to balance the weight better. Hell of a thing to do either way :)
You explained to us how you’d respond to someone sitting so close to you…However, you’re not a geeky, not-particularly-attractive bureaucrat suddenly surprised to find a beautiful woman sitting next to him. Put yourself in his shoes. He’s thinking, ‘I can’t believe this! Does this mean she’s into me? And when she touches his shoulder, he certainly does feel it, but he’s wondering if she’s being flirtatious. If it weren’t for the emetic she put into his drink, he’d be on cloud nine all afternoon, wondering if he’ll see her again the next day. There’s a reason she plays that particular role in the heist.
I guess a interesting fact would be that most people these days only know the Mission Impossible films and not that it's based off an old TV show (I used to watch it as a kid on Nickelodeon) and that Peter Graves, the original actor that played the main character and hero, Jim Phelps from the show was asked to reprise his character for the movie. He, however, declined because he didn't approve of his character's villainous turn in the movie. He played Jim Phelps for so long and knew the character well enough to insist he would never turn his back on the agency. So they hired Jon Voight to take his place.
The Mission Impossible TV series, that this movie concept was taken from was about a team of secret agents, succeeding together. When I saw the team get eliminated in the first part of the movie I was very disappointed. Overall it was a very good movie, even if it was not true to the TV series and more of a Jason Borne adventure.
The Eurotunnel has TWO SEPERATE Tubes, one for each direction. So it is NOT POSSIBLE that a train passes by in the other direction in the same tube. The Tubs are each big enough though to have a helicopter fly in.
In the server room scene you can tell Tom was definitely held upside down IRL because his face is red. Just noticed that this time around.
For the French guy, watch La Femme Nikkita, and he did another spy/ shootemup movie, but I don't remember the name, and a fantastic movie with Robert DeNiro called, Ronin!
This was a tv series as well . 60s to the 80s .. baby tom cruise had been in movies since 1982 .( the real. Baby cruise) as a teenager. .
hey V, hope you're well. just wanted to ask if you are you planning on more Breaking Bad? I was having a blast watching it with you.
regardless of the answer, thank you so much for being here! take care, V. :)
I recommend Tom Cruise again in A Few Good Men 👍.
Well, well!!! I grew up watching the original TV series, then these many years later - watching this! OH YEAH!! lol
Jack is played by Emilio Estevez, brother of Charlie Sheen.
This movie is strangly honest
What you see is what happens, no more no less. You don't see a character died ? He didnt'
"Who survive is the mole" That was right
"Yay! Wait no...the fish. The fish!"
I really liked your reaction, very genuine. I really liked the video, don't stop doing it. Now you need to react to everything that remains of the saga or more of his films, such as Top Gun or a Matter of Honor
It might be a bit ironic but MI III was directed produced by JJ Abrams and Alex Kurtzman the team behind various Star Trek movies or shows. Obviously they can do a good action flick, but just not when it takes place in the 24th century......
This was awesome vicky
Greatest action franchise ever
If you go for the whole franchise you'll hear a lot of crap talked about the second movie, but it holds a special place in my heart out of the first 3, with the first being (to me) just a well-directed thriller with a bit better action than normal and the third being a snooze in general other than a pretty good villain (I'm being literal, I had to watch it twice after falling asleep the first try). The second one goes over the top hard. It's a John Woo movie more than a Mission Impossible movie, and I'm cool with that - hope you dig it, too.
Finally! Someone who also thinks MI3 was a snooze! It's the only one I can't watch very often ....lol...😅
Bro someone literally saved her from emotional damage with Schindlers list 😮💨
Well, you should thank that one voter. Lovely as always, V. Love the braids
😂😂😂 I love your reactions ❤️❤️❤️
i watched this in the theaters when it came out. I was like 13.
this franchise is the definition of an action movie. and please double back to Schindlers list bcccccccc my god.
MI:I is amazing. Schidler's List will make you cry
In the scene at the train station, Ethan is pretending to go along with Jim's accusation that Kittridge was the mole - but, the flashbacks in the scene are what Ethan really thinks happened. At this point Ethan knows that Jim is the mole after he found out the bible was from the "Drake Hotel" in Chicago. Jim seems to cotton on that Ethan knows, but, the cat and mouse is prolonged due to Ethan not being sure about Claire.
V, i'm on watching you react to Mission: Impossible
and i always enjoy your reactions of anything,
have a great week and Thank You V.😊👍🌞
Did you notice the white haired agent working with Kittridge? Does he look familiar at all? You've seen him before.
The biggest flaw with this movie is that they decided to throw Jim Phelps under the bus and make him a villain. Imagine the hero of another long-running TV series suddenly being evil for a film adaptation solely for shock value.
Your braids are cute. Welcome, V, to an amazing series. Back in ancient times, the TV series was awesome. We always got the briefing, the self-destruct, and the wonderful theme song. "The Insector gadget cartoon copied the formula."Mr Phelps was played by Peter Graves,"The pilot in AIRPLANE." The one thing the real Mr. Phelps would never do is betray his team. That being said these movies always have a great cast and story. They are worth watching.
Please do reactions for the rest of the Mission Impossible movies!! They are some of my favorite action/spy movies!
amazing franchise , watch them all
Well you have to do schilders list as well. Yes that the mission impossible song. You want young tom cruise you have to see Days of thunder or Risky Business.
In the deleted scenes Mrs. Phelps and Ethan already had an affair and Jim knew about it...
Tom Cruise got bounced off the floor numerous times in the vault scene..
PlutoTV has a Mission: Impossible channel - you should catch an episode or 2 of the original series. 😊
If you really want to see 'baby Tom Cruise' then give Legend a look. I'm not saying it's amazing but it was really fun.
Oh dear god. That means we're getting a Schindler's list reaction at some point :(
No fish were harmed in the making of this film. lol
Can't wait for you to see the others! MI2 is a little campy, but 3 to 6 are freaking gold!
A picture of you, on the verge of tears, for the thumbnail of your reaction video to a M:I movie. A MISSION IMPOSSIBLE MOVIE. :D Gosh you are a human hamster.
