I'm a network architect that works for a decently sized ISP, and we've been seeing a massive uptick in game-based DDoS attacks in general recently. FYI - if you purchase business class internet, a lot of packages will include DDoS mitigation. You can get someone like me on the phone in the event of an attack, and have them blackhole the source flows upstream. Allowing you to continue playing and mitigating the event. For some large streamers like Otz, it might be a good idea to get some commercial mitigation ("scrubbing") solutions in place. I'm really frustrated with the people originating these attacks lately. Not only does it harm the victim's experience, but it means people like me have to work overtime doing mitigation work we really shouldn't need to be doing.
@LucolanYT I started out working help desk, then moved to software development. I worked at an MSP doing networking (mainly because I was getting burnt out with development), and fell in love with networking. Landed a job as a network engineer I at the ISP, and moved up from there over the past 5 years
This might sound insanely conspiratorial but what's stopping people from implementing ddos attacks and then turning around and going "Wow that sucks, anyway we sell ddos mitigation so that might help", obviously no one is doing that just for dbd lol
@@UncannySwan It's illegal and no corporation wants to deal with the backlash over something like that - also, DDoS and packet flooding has been a popular attack since the internet was invented. It's just WAY easier to facilitate now, as you can google "how to rent a botnet" and pay a company to let you borrow their network of a couple thousand PCs to flood your target with trash requests until their router gives the fuck up and needs to be reset, or they stop the data from flooding in.
Like resetting people's perks after 1000 hours of gameplay so they need to prestige every character just to get back the perks they already earned. What's another 300,000,000 BP.
@@Somnus_FESfr can’t believe all these selfish people are actively trying to get BHVR to fix an issue, they need all the time they can to prepare the next killer “The Backpack”
No, they don't have empathy. They never Prestiged Claudette. (For real though, there are a lot of people in the world willing to have other's suffer/be inconvenienced as long as they don't have to face the consequences of their actions)
This sadly once again shows they need to do a full health chapter to fix the game and the serious flaws. I understand that BHVR needs to make money to keep the game going but there won't be anyone to pay for their stuff if it keeps going downhill like this.
Honestly I used to say this same thing… three years ago. At this point they know that no matter what’s happening, they can make minor fixes while just dropping a new chapter a month. They’re making the money and retaining the players. It’s all that matters to them
I'm in DBD since 2017. People have been saying that kind of stuff since then, probably even earlier. I'm just a classic "Sunk Cost Fallacy" Player. I still play dbd now and then, but I’m nowhere near as invested as I was at a time
I'm not a big internet security person, but from what I heard this is an issue with how the game was initially built way back and rebuilding the game with the proper security and architecture is basically the only real way to get properly ahead of hackers and DDOS attacks, and they're just not gonna do that for a game this old. Unfortunate but it makes sense. Other studios of very popular online games like Overwatch, CS, league/dota, etc., have explained how it's basically an arms race with unknown hackers where your best bet is sometimes to just play whack-a-mole when weaknesses are exposed, and the last thing you want to do is officially disclose how you plugged the holes in your system. Even disclosing when you fixed it is something hackers can use to better define what solution you implemented was. So my guess is that when this happened a few years ago, the DDOS hacker didn't get bored, BHVR probably fixed it and just didn't say anything because that would be assisting the hackers. My main point is: I don't think there's a time where they aren't working on the health and security of the game. Balance and killer viability is another issue on its own however.
It's related to steam, but it's most likely a security flaw in Bhvr's implementation. Otherwise this would be happening in a lot of games especially games that don't have dedicated servers. No one deserves to have their livelihood attacked by assholes.
The reason why its happening on Steam is because the profile names of the people playing can be seen on the lobby, then again, that allow to find that profile on Steam, wich allow anyone to track their IP with... Thousands of methods and programs? And then start a DDoS. Easiest solution would be not to show Steam players names. Just like they already do on Epic... Then again... Cheaters would spread like fucking rabbits. Also, It has something to do (though im not entirely sure what is It exacly) about how dbd operates the servers, wich, then again... Comes from a long tradition of "the killer is the server" and already written code, hard to fix in any sense. Easy to tweek, but hard to recode in its full length.
The fact that one player can basically decide if another player can actually play and enjoy the game is unfair and total BS. I mean it happens pretty bad in a ton of games it just can't really be abused as maliciously. Its horrid in ranked matchmaking in most shooters tbh and any server based game like ark, dayz or rust(people will shut entire ark servers down just to fill the server with exclusively their tribe to freely raid any base on the map with hundreds of players). It's only so prevelent in dbd bc you can basically pull people into your lobby and target specifically them.
@@haiz768 DO NOT talk about camping like it's the same as a DDoS, It's not even close, atleast with camping there are perks to counter it and you still have the chance to escape depending what killer it is or can just watch youtube and wait 3 minutes. Also with implanting a security anti-DDoS architecture within your network increase your bandwidth. Usually even with big enterprise networks h4ckers have more than 1 PC (zombies bots) because to really shutdown networks instead of slow then takes lots and lots of data.
Back when this was an issue a year ago, out of curiosity I did some raw capturing of the network traffic from my computer to any of BHVR's servers just to see what type of communication they were using. Turns out, about half of the stuff was unencrypted. I could see names and profiles of survivors in my lobby, name and profile of the killer and what killer it was, items, add-ons, offerings, and perks of everyone. There were also many plaintext IP address that could have been the players in my lobby, I'm not sure. As someone who works with security in some capacity, I'm honestly shocked that this is even possible. One of the main reasons they moved over to dedicated servers was for security as it moved the game away from P2P. I'd love to see the source code just to see how this game is coded. Might need a pair of scissors to cut the tape it is held together with though.
My guess, from doing Network Operations in different fields, is that they only sort of moved to Dedicated Servers. Sounds like they 'repurposed' the P2P code to look to the server instead of peers or something. Just reminds me too much of some of the bizarro hacks different departments would pull when they had to migrate to new servers but were still using tools made in the 80s and 90s.
Kind of makes me think they don't hash the IPs, or use a common hashing method that these little shits can un-hash using whatever dashboard they're renting from a hack/cheat company.
we all know they have spaghetti-code. they didn't even know how to fix stretched res until a community member showed them how. so we need someone who fixes this mess of a code.

@@aromatic8565 im shocked the fact that this data is still being sent. You would have thought they would have had a complete rewrite of the networking code to accommodate the move away from P2P. But this breach signifies they didn't

So with my understanding of how DDoS works, which admittedly is limited but I know of the technical applications of it and such, the only way I can imagine people in your lobby being able to be DDoS'd would be if people are using your steam ID to find a match ID and booting people from there with the connected IP's would be my first assumption. I don't know the entire framework of how steam but this would my guess as to how people are getting attacked.
I have a theory that there's some hidden unused code in DbD's Steam version for joining lobbies with other people and it leaks information. I noticed recently while checking other people's profiles that there's a Join button while they are playing DbD on Steam with me. Which makes no sense unless there's at least partially working functionality for this. Which means there might be something like API call that tells you IP of the lobby and even people who are in it.
What a terrible issue. I’m sure that a reputable and competent company like BHVR will have this issue fixed in no time though! (Not before a few pig nerfs)
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that this might actually be connected to a similar thing being done on TF2, where bots can force themselves to join your game, even on a private link while not being their friend. Except DBD dropps maybe an ID of the lobby in the link? And something allows them to pull match data from it and DDoS the IPs.
I've had 2 games on 2 consecutive days where I was on groaning storehouse and had the game suddenly seem to stutter and the killer proceeded to clip through the environment while me and other survivors were unable to move, neither me or other survivors in the matches had any in game ping indicators to suggest that our/killer internet connection was to blame
Sounds like they were intercepting the packets from your pcs and stopping your inputs from hitting the game's server, making it think you weren't moving, or doing anything. Probably a paid cheat package, there's a disgusting amount of discords out there for this shit.

ever since i heard of it all of a sudden i stopped getting host disconnections that lasted for 7 months since last year, then when that rtm connection issue got fixed my game was fixed but after that i havent played

I’d be interested in seeing how this is done. This seems so different from how DDOS attacks would usually go. Leaving the person on while hitting everyone else interacting while not being in the lobby.
For some reason yesterday I had really bad connection, I played other games and had no issues, I beleive the servers themselfs also get ddosed in addition to the players themselves.
I tend to get Coconut in my games as Survivor somewhat often so this actually might affect me more than I think. It’s odd how much I actually play against him.
I have heard this happening in other games that are using steam lobbies, so it is not exclusive to DBD which means BHVR doesn't have that much power in fixing that, like there is a flaw with steam's technology they would need to fix
I doubt they are targeting just the other players. They likely are hitting everyone, and something about your network isn't playing nice with their botnet. Like you said, likely your vpn.
I’m on console. First match as Skull Merchant, two survivors got booted really early (they were doing well so not frustration), so I let the other two farm. A few more minutes in I got booted. Next game had two more get booted. 2 games later as survivor, another console player got booted. I asked them if that’s what happened and it was, and happened to them before. Next day tried killer again and two more got booted. Now anytime I see someone leave at a random time I assume it’s some issue besides frustration.
It's not just DBD that has this DDoS targeting issue, I know one of the Black Ops cheat menus (for personal offline use) I use has a function built in that lets you lookup any steamid's current lobby information, send a crash, forcibly join, malevolent shit like that. How it does that I have no idea but it's either got to be something connected to the general server or through steam's server api.

Now i heard the first min of your Vid and ask myself...could that be this Ddos stuff? How do I find out if it is? Please help!

I really think the only thing we should do as a community is to stop playing the game. It's showing us now that's it's even putting some of our data at risk. and BHVR is scratching their nuts with the info.
Advice, pay for a VPN. Your security is at risk at any time on the net, not just this game. I had my Epic games account, Netflix, and Insta hacked at one point and I hadn't touched this game or ever have clicked on shit that was deemed as risky. If they want to, they'll hack you. Get the VPN
@@WutTheDeuceGaming The only thing a VPN does is funnel your traffic through another server, which does nothing to prevent you from data breaches/bad security practices. 99% of the websites you visit/apps you use likely have HTTPS, which already encrypts your traffic for you

What's crazy is, this is highly illegal. Imagine risking that because of a video game. Buy and use a VPN people. It is worth it when considering your internet security. This is a BHVR issue, this is the only game where this is a topic even. This seems to be a last ditch effort by cheaters considering they cannot hold a game hostage anymore. If you spend a lot of time on the net, you really should have a VPN.
Happened to me last night and I’m not a streamer. I know exactly who it was too, it was another teammate mad at me because I unhooked them cause I didn’t know they were trying to die on hook. I know cause they started throwing pallets and me and throwing a fit.
You actually don’t need to be in a lobby with a pc player to get DDOS’d as a console player. If you use an IP sniffer, you can get anyone in your lobbies IP and DDOS them regardless of the platform. There are actual websites that you can put the IP into for free and it will DDOS that IP and these websites have been up and running since the original MW2. With that being said, the problem isn’t with steam because as a console player I have been on the receiving end of DDOS attacks on a variety of large games. The problem is with these websites that allow anyone with a computer to download free IP sniffers and IP stressors(DDOS websites). These websites also allow you to set the amount of time you are held offline which is the scary part.
I got disconnected from lobbies while loading about 3 times today and game gave me a ban for half an hour already. I guess this time it's dangerous to play, regardless of you being a content creator or not.
if it only happened to a smaller group of people than rn, bhvr wouldnt even have acknowledged it. multiple bugs I(and probably others) have reported(with footage) that are still in the game and never appear in the "known bugs" or "fixed bugs"
But, I’m nobody and this issue happened to me or my friends often. Id think is ddos. I also noticed some match drops connection with dbd servers for me and everybody in the match.
I've seen a lot of crazy stuff, like people even flying. I've been spared though thankfully. But I feel for content creators that get messed with. Hopefully BHVR finds a solution.
YIPPEEE!! Another reason to take a break from the game, beside the dry-spell! Seriously, now is a good time for a DBD break for those who are burnt like me.
I saw a theory in a Aaron Duke vid where this happens when people are disgruntled with the games health. Almost as a protest of shitty chapters and whatnot
I just wouldn't play the game right now 1) It's not safe, they're much more likely to attack streamers, but they'll still get your information 2) BHVR really doesn't deserve to have players right now since it's actually a danger
DDOSing could be an effective balance tool, imagine never having to face the same nurse twice. Soon as you see them pop online, you pop them back offline, suddenly nurse drops off the tier list.

wow okay that makes a lot of since. been playing the last couple weeks without any issue, but now i get randomly booted out at least a couple times a day.
I think Behavior’s tweet was a polite way of saying “We checked our end and the issue is not coming from DBD” This is their way of hinting that the dDos is coming from Twitch or Steam
why do people even do this? its like when the cheaters would hold people hostage. they're either kids who see it as a funny troll or losers with no life.
The fact you said this happened before and that BHVR didn’t actually fix it us really concerning. If I had to guess, they might have pinpointed the problem but it’s just too massive a time investment to fix that they’re just hoping this blows over. The games code is spaghetti, it’s a mess. Why else does this game require such massive patches that time an hour to install even when I have google fiber? The code is probably a clusterfuck. The game has grown far bigger than I imagine any of the devs could have even imagined when they made it, and back then there was 3 killers and 4 survivors. And the only games they made before DBD was licensed game, single player shovelware. There is no way BHVR 7 years ago made their first PvP multiplayer game that had a solid bedrock of code that could support quick patches to security loopholes after they’ve added 31 killers, 36 survivors, all the new mechanics unique perks and killer powers. They probably know at this point exactly what’s happening and either don’t m is how to make the change without remaking the whole game, or don’t think the time investment into figuring out how to patch it is worth it.
Hey Scott! I have some ideas that could freshen up the game. Maybe add the ability to go prone (lay down) as another input in the game but the killer has the ability to pick you straight up. It would also give other perks such as deerstalker a chance to shine (with a slight re-work) Another item like a mirror so you can look backwards without moving the mouse or stick (could be used to blind too). What do you think? Simple ideas that could make things less stale now and be cool elements to play around with in future.
I'm gonna be the Devil's advocate here, even though I'm as annoyed as everyone else, BHVR remaining vague about their solution to these attacks is probably an attempt at not warning the DDoS attackers of what their solution might be or _when_ it'll be in place. As a company they know what a massive DDoS attack can do (remember when it happened to Overwatch some years ago? Playerbase freakin _dipped_ until it was fixed. However Blizzard can afford to lose some revenue/playerbase since they are a _massive_ company and Overwatch has a _huge_ playerbase so losing a chunk of it for a while isn't the end of the world, DBD simply doesn't have the playerbase to stay vulnerable for too long) so they are scrambling to fix it so their main figurehead & almost sole source of positive advertisement (the big streamers) don't straight up cause the game to take a sudden dive, however they have to do so in a way that isn't widely know so it's harder to start again.
I first play thing game around three years ago for around ten hour or more hours on console and really enjoy the game but then I got DDos attack on a huntress game when the survivor with friends played really bad and was going to be hooked twice in the first minute of the game. I stop playing entirely after that because it left a bad taste in my mouth but now it funny because back then I was playing against bully squads or people who were so much better then me without knowing, that by comparison I knew he playing badly.
not the same thing, but i ran into someone that did the instant end game cheat. because they started losing, also your never safe on xbox, if you are in a xbox party with someone, they had your ip. if you play the wrong game, they have your ip, like xbox is terrible with security
I’ve never been Ddossed on dbd since they day I started playing when huntress’s was released. Recently I decided to okay Fortnite again because me and my partner needed something new to play. After quite a few games and some practice I went all in. I destroyed someone and in return they DDdossed me. Luckily I know how to combat this. This has never happened to me in dbd but within a couple days of another game it happened. I don’t think this is much of an issue with dbd. My mmr is pretty high and not once has a salty gamer DDossed me. Not only that but in my whole dbd experiences I have only ever come across a small handful of hackers compared to other pvp competitive games who have a much higher player base. Everyone’s is quick to judge a game based on a select group of players even tho the majority of players play the game in which it is intended minus the toxicity. In my opinion dbd isn’t as toxic as other online games. I no longer play dbd as I’m having a break so I can enjoy the game again but if I’m being honest I have encountered more toxic gameplay in various other games. At the end of the day some people are toxic and that will never change. Don’t blame the game blame the players.

Or if the DDoS attacks only affected feng and nea players lol

That's actually kinda stupid that they wouldn't prioritize these people because its more then likely that they are probably hackers, and I'm sure they have thing where they can just unlock all the cosmetics for free, but I could be talking out my ass cus I don't understand the programing behind the hacks for this game

Facts
Can I ask your job path? No is of course fine, I'm just entering similar fields right now :)
at least you get some ot pay though

I feel like this could be related to the ”recent players” feature possibly

I play on ps4 and got ddosed early this morning, this is the first time I've ever been kicked offline on ps4. Guess I was upsetting them with Wesker😢
Not sure if it was a part of it but I was on Xbox and had the game saying I had an initialization error all day and couldn’t play.

Why not? I've been dced when winning as killer a few times but I've been able to get a new game quickly until the time penalty comes
i'm pretty sure i got ddos twice a couple days ago, someone needs to fix this fast
DDOSing could be an effective balance tool, imagine never having to face the same nurse twice. Soon as you see them pop online, you pop them back offline, suddenly nurse drops off the tier list.
I'm surprised more people don't use vpns for online gaming
Went up against a blight who was losing and then he wanted to farm, my friends let him get two hooks. Just because I escaped and didn’t want to farm I got DDOs’d. After 2 seconds of escaping my internet crashed out of no where’s but my friends didn’t have any issues. So I’m glad I don’t DBD like that cus I’m not trying to deal with that
wow okay that makes a lot of since. been playing the last couple weeks without any issue, but now i get randomly booted out at least a couple times a day.
Lul I play this game using my college's wifi. I'm not sure what happens if somebody tries to dDos that?
I think Behavior’s tweet was a polite way of saying “We checked our end and the issue is not coming from DBD”
This is their way of hinting that the dDos is coming from Twitch or Steam
I got DDoS'd a week ago
It's starting to remind me of old GTA 5 where you'd revenge kill, someone in a jet and you'd be without internet for a week
I understand that this is a serious problem... but any reason for me not to play this game is a positive for me 🤣
i have a feeling its some ancient steam dbd interaction, like from release ancient
Would it be a good idea to just not play the game for a while?
why do people even do this? its like when the cheaters would hold people hostage. they're either kids who see it as a funny troll or losers with no life.
unemployed behavior
I personally wouldn’t let this happen to me
why is there a new problem with this game on the weekly
Just happened to me and I'm not even a streamer.
BHVR just needs to get their shit together. Been over 4 years now
Unrelated but has anyone seen haddonfield lately? Giant hole in the outer wall, you can just walk out there and drop off the map
HA, finally it paid off that i don't play DBD anymore, they can't target me now
The fact you said this happened before and that BHVR didn’t actually fix it us really concerning.
I stop playing entirely after that because it left a bad taste in my mouth but now it funny because back then I was playing against bully squads or people who were so much better then me without knowing, that by comparison I knew he playing badly.
it happened to me when i tried to hook a servivor
Nothing a new feng skin can't fix
watched all the ads to help you guys with the move 🔥🔥🔥
not the same thing, but i ran into someone that did the instant end game cheat. because they started losing, also your never safe on xbox, if you are in a xbox party with someone, they had your ip. if you play the wrong game, they have your ip, like xbox is terrible with security
I got hit for the first time today by one of the survivors and I wasn’t even streaming or a streamer
The big question is, how do we fix this or stop this?
I’m not a streamer I been getting this but I have private internet so it doesn’t effect me but others around me
was good timing that ive been playing Hunt Showdown regularly for like the past week instead of dbd
