It's 22 years for me now (as a Catholic, coming from Paganism). When I made the decision to become Catholic. 1) My atheist parents told my sisters to avoid me, as I had become certifiably insane 2) My husband was upset because "he didn't buy into this when he married me" 3) my best friends were very upset, because now they thought I'd be judging them at every turn. 4) My very best friend was the most upset, as she grew up in a foster care system where she was abused by Christian people.
I had to sit in the pew by myself for a while. Good things that happened? My 13 year old son was baptized with me. Turns out he wanted to for a long time. My sister (who was on the street got clean and sober in a Catholic recovery home. When she was baptized, my parents became convinced that there must be a God, and one of them attended her baptism. Two of my nieces also became Catholic. My husband has followed me to Rome twice, the Holy Land, Paris, and several Catholic Churches. He respects my faith. (but isn't there yet). I'm very much at peace with my faith, and now teach RCIA (for ten years)
It's like Peter said, "Lord, you have the words of Eternal Life!" How can you consider leaving when you KNOW what the EUCHARIST really is!
Continuing to pray for you all the time, Lizzie, as I know with all that I am, that you are being equipped by the Holy Spirit to be a voice for Mother Church.

  • @Woopthereitis90

The worst part about being confirmed and proclaiming my newfound Catholic faith was entering a rocky territory in my relationship with my grandma, who had been the only person up until that point who had talked to me about Jesus and introduced me to Him in the setting of her Evangelical, often anti-Catholic church community. For years she criticized or made snide comments about the Church if I was caught wearing a saints bracelet or praying a rosary. She thought I was going off the deep end. More recently she's become accepting and in fact *happy* to see me passionate about Christianity, even if it's not her version of it. We even pray together now.
It was also super rough to date as a practicing Catholic in my early 20s. The only guys who respected my commitment to chastity were oftentimes fervent Protestants (who also wanted to convert me) and the closest I could get to being with a Catholic were often lukewarm dudes of Italian/Irish descent who only went to Mass when their moms (or myself) guilted them into it. Lol, it sucked - but this video puts into perspective the small martyrdom I went through compared to what many others endure from embracing the truth.
Now, the BEST parts about being a Catholic that make all of this well worth it: having a referendum of thousands of years of theological knowledge and apologetics from saints and philosophers to answer my questions, the powerful family of saints to intercede for us, the timelessness and beauty of Catholic art, the countless graces received from frequent reception of the sacraments, finally meeting a man who shares this same perspective with whom to marry and embark on a VOCATION, discovering the traditional Latin mass and its glory... and, most importantly, being close to the MOTHER OF JESUS, revering her, and receiving her Son in THE EUCHARIST.
    This is powerful stuff, people.

Wheeeew, girl. What you said about being scared that you’d lose your relationship with God and how He was the only One who understood every inch of your life in that time is something I truly felt. For the past month, God has been the only one to see me being convinced to pull away from the Catholic Church by my Protestant friends and then see me struggle with truth to the point where it lead me BACK into the sacramental life within the Catholic Church. One prayer that I’ve prayed everyday since coming to terms with the truth within the Catholic Church is thanking God for being so patient with me while no one else was or could even understand to be. No matter what, God is on our side. He will always be there for us if we only be open to it, and I’m so thankful you were! Praying for everyone’s journey home back to the Church. Open ears to listen, open hearts to love and believe.

Lizzie, I am a devoted catholic man and you are so right about the sex abuse. Sometimes I can't blame other religion bashing our faith, and that's because maybe we claim to be part of the true church but what what other priests are doing is so much in contrast to Christ. And don't worry, the whole Catholic church thinks too that there are bishops and priests who are going to hell. I don't know if I remember it correctly but I think from what I have read on the letter of fatima is that on the last days, priests will be going against priests, cardinals against cardinals, and the evil will corrupt even those catholic leaders on the higher part of the Church hierarchy. Let's all pray for our Chuch fathers and believe in Jesus' promise "gates of hell shall not prevail". God bless you sister! From PH 🇵🇭

As far as the sex abuse crisis goes, I like the way that father Luis Toro explains it. He is a Venezuelan expert in apologetics that travels throughout Latin America answering questions from both catholics and protestants (and even debates protestant pastors who challenge him). He says that if Judas Iscariot failed as an apostle after having the best teacher anyone could have had, then that means that at least 1 out of every 12 priests may fail as well. But that also means that 11 out of 12 will remain true to the faith so you can't broad brush the entire church as being evil and wicked. 1 out of 12 may commit horrible things and fall to sin. But 11 out of 12 will stay faithful and will do wonderful things in the name of The Lord.

Lizzie, this is one of the most beautiful and inspiring videos I have seen in a while. I am a Cradle Catholic soon to be 50 and father of four millennial in their tweens . After listening to you, I am really praying that I will have the blessing to hear this toddler Catholic when she becomes an adult. You made me cry at the end of scary part #5. You are made of the same stuff of what the Saints are made of. You are incredibly brave. Becoming Christian requires faith but going back Home to Rome requires incredible bravery. Depositing all your trust in God with such ominous odds that you describe to really follow Him , reminds of another young girl who risked everything 2000 years ago who answered "...Let it happen to me as you have said".
Also, while I was listening to you I could not keep thinking about St Augustine, St Ignatius but more that anyone, St Elizabeth Ann Seton.
At the begging of your video it can be noticed how you admire Dr Hahn and his conversion story. Let me tell you something, your story, your ease at words, your strong connection and love to God, your studies, experiences and preparation, and your never ceasing hunger to still know Him more and bring Him to others, is just like Dr Hahn's. But your story is one just right for this younger generation. One generation that really needs God to speak to them, through their day to day struggles and darkness. And He does by letting them listen to His heart and discover the beauty and perfection of His True Church through voices, words, smiles and tears just like yours. I wish I had listened to you back in my twenties.
Finally, of all the Bible, since I was probably 8 until now, my favorite passage has always been Chapter 13 of 1st Corinthians, but today, thanks to you, I think I just found the cherry on the cake to top it off. Yes indeed, it is, 1 John 4:18 which I had not noticed until now.
God Bless you and know that you will be in my prayers from now on as I will be asking for God to let the world discover and follow the example of this young Catholic that is now just a toddler but that with His Grace will grow into a full grown adult.

Going from the “teacher’s pet” with all the scripture answers to a baby Catholic is so humbling.
Going from much needed drawn out socialization after worship to people leaving the sanctuary in record time is extremely lonely.
The different music is a challenge. We’ve visited a few Catholic Churches in our area before settling and they all put different tunes to the Gloria and Alleluia. I would love a latin Mass, but one is not nearby.
My husband (a cradle catholic) does not understand why it’s been such a culture shock for me. My parents, especially my mom, are deeply disappointed in my decision to leave the Baptist church for the Catholic Church.
Sitting through Mass with my young children has been a struggle. People can tell that they were not raised (oldest is 8, youngest 2. Baptist’s often put their children in the nursery) in the rituals and the judging eyes are much more frequent than the sympathetic ones. Though they are learning, and are getting used to the new reality.
Acknowledging that the spiritual realm (saints and angels, etc) is real and not just a glorified children’s story is beautiful and terrifying.
As for the sexual scandal. One of the last reasons for me to finally commit to the conversion was realizing that no human institution is perfect. A local protestant minister was being charged with indecent with a minor. Another one I had known committed suicide. And another was fired for having an affair.
I began researching about 5 years ago. I knew the Catholic Church was the right church 3 years ago. But I kept making excuses. (Most already mentioned above) But if I was going to do this, I needed to do it in a way that my oldest could attend CCD and not RCIA. So I jumped in last summer. There is so much to learn and the more you look the more there is.
On that, it’s also terrifying to be aware of how much you don’t understand and wonder if you will ever catch up. And what important thing might I be missing.

@Patrick Nugroho Hadiwinoto As I read that post again, I see how much I was needing someone to commiserate with. Brandi Qbee lol....do you think there was/is a perfect religion? Of course NONE! Being a catholic isn’t about the people it is about the true church that christ built. When God created something for his glory, satan was always there to destroy it. Satan destroys Eve and Adam. Judas left Jesus ministry empty but he put Peter as the primacy to lead the church and replaced Judas by Mathias. We had killer popes, scadals, abused, but the church survived all throughout history. Because that a promise. Jesus said even the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19:19 _"those who through no fault of their own"_
The question is, how many are that?
If one is pro-choice and rejects the Catholic Church because it isn't, is one for no fault of one's own ignorant of the church, or is one ignoring it for the fault of being pro-choice?
I have had to tell a man, he was the director of the school where I taught autumn term 1995, and I was a young, not experienced in teaching, replacement teacher, he felt he needed to be fatherly to me, which I appreciated less, and I had to tell him basically, I cannot know for sure God considered him as sufficiently ignorant or idiotic to not be rejecting Catholicism precisely _through_ a fault of his own which woud lead him to Hell.
I later had some confirmation of the suspicion.
And believe me, saying a thing like that in the Swedish country-side, not for a holiness church, but for Catholicism, it is not a ladder to social climbing, if I may say so ...
Medical miracles. There are standards for medical miracles to be acceptable, like at Lourdes the standard was "immediate, complete remission and without relapse" - otherwise I think the miracle would not be attributed to The Blessed Virgin interceding in Lourdes. Sth one might want to check out on some recently "canonised". There is _also_ the question of orthodoxy and orthopraxy in recorded life.

23:23 Very fortunately for me, I converted years before that came out into the open, and for a priest from Poland - both RCIA and most confessions the first year. He had been ordained before Vatican II, and therefore was certainly validly a priest, this was before Pope Michael was elected, so his giving absolution was not formally schismatic against a real Pope, and Poland has had VERY few sex abusing priests, not at all like France or US.
In France it started in the 40's, and this was also when precisely Paris asked Pontifical Biblical Commission, "can we say Adam's special creation only extends to his soul, and his body evolved" and Paris archdiocese had had old earth and evolution acceptance since 1920.

In terms of anyone’s eternal destiny we must always remember that Hell is a prison locked from the inside. It is deliberately chosen by those who finally and resolutely reject Christ in this life and who die in this state of mortal sin unrepentant. Ave Maria.

Lizzy, regarding the scandals, perhaps this passage from Jacques Maritain's book, On the Church of Christ (page 14), will help: "To the extent that a man acts in grace and charity, he lives by the life of the Church, his actions manifest in him the very life of the Whole of which he is a part. To the extent that a man is lacking in grace and charity, to the same extent, if he is a member of the Church, he withdraws from her life. And the evil actions that he commits are no stains on the Church, because the Church has no part in them; they do not soil the face of the Church, except as the spittles of the soldiers soiled the face of Jesus. The sins of Alexander VI related to his own person, from which they proceeded; they did not relate at all, except in order to offend her, to the person of the Church."
Here is where theology confronts modernity, our modernity. It is true that both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict have apologized for the sins of the Church when speaking to the victims of the scandal-surely they could do nothing else. It was no place for lectures on ecclesiology. Nevertheless, Maritain has supplied us with the tools to maintain an apologetic for the Church in this area. They were not the sins of the Church, but rather betrayals of the Church. And, of course, the same principle applies in every other area where the Church has been accused of evil down the years."

You look like your about to cry.....and you're correct....these types of decisions are often hard, consequence wise. They PROBLEM you point to, Catholic Churches not very "responsive" in a personal way stems from the very size of some of these Churches, whereas, you see that Eastern Churches tend to be smaller, and an Eastern Bishop is, typically, over just a few churches. So easier to create more of a true "family" feeling. Catholic Churches should look into that aspect of church/congregation size.

The Methodist Church does not have the Calvinism, faith alone, once saved always saved, and scripture alone view that so many Protestant churches do. Methodists believe salvation is open to everyone, you work on your salvation for the rest of your life after you accept Christ, good works are necessary, and a combination of scripture + reason + experience + tradition go into understanding the faith. Methodism is based on Arminianism, not Calvinism. Methodism grew out of Anglicanism, and the Salvation Army came from Methodism.

No!!! We must pray for those priest and the victims so that neither the priest or the victims leave God because of what happened and instead stay with and love God. If we become accusers like satan we will lead ourselves astray. We can yes get mad and call for protection for kids and young men, but we must not hate the priests, their soups are at risk now, the church wants them to come back to God not push them away.....

Why I can't go back to being Catholic, or even Christian: Thanks for showing John 4:18. I'm supposed to love God "with all my heart, my soul," etc. But this is a God who will keep me in Hell for all eternity (even if I sent myself there with my own free will). Sorry, but it's the other way around from John 4:18. The fear of going to Hell cancels out the love. You can't really love someone you're afraid of. A God that would even create Hell is a monster. If God were truly compassionate he would just annihilate those who rejected Him, not keep them in a state of torment - forever.
And even if I made it to Heaven, I would still know that Hell was there and and that people were suffering there. I wouldn't take delight in that suffering as Thomas Aquinas did (what a heartless phony he was). I guess I'm just venting here. You don't have to respond to this, Lizzie. I think you're a wonderful person and wish you the best in your journey.

I am so sorry that this has troubled you. Really. I understand. This question of "how could a supposedly loving God punish his children forever" was always something that I bothered me, as a Catholic. I am not a theologian, and I am open to someone who is more knowledgeable correcting me. But this is my understanding.
I think the most important thing to understand is that God does not wish, nor send any person to hell. Hell is the natural consequence of a person rejecting God and His love, and they send themselves to a place completely absent of him and his goodness. This is where the notion of demons poking people with spears in fire pits comes from because we make the educated guess that if God is not there in any way, it can't be pleasant. But again, all we know for a fact is that hell is complete separation from God.
We also believe that hell is the unfortunate result of the fall of man. God does not wish, hope, or send anyone to hell. Hell was not in his original design and He does not want any soul to be there. He will not violate our free will, but He is always wanting to save us from hell and bring us to heaven with Him.
Another element of church teaching is that God does not hold people accountable for what they do not know. And so, we can say, that all the people who have lived and never known Jesus or the grace of God are certainly not out of the running for salvation. In fact, every person who has lived and will live is not shut out from His grace due to factors they cannot control.
The Catechism tells us in entry #847: "Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do His will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - these too may achieve eternal salvation.
So the threat of hell is not nearly as scary when you don’t believe that a person's salvation is dictated by their knowledge of Jesus, as is the teaching amongst many protestant denominations. Every person who as ever lived is only accountable for their knowledge and awareness, and God did not create anyone without a chance of salvation. So all the Hindus, Muslims, Atheists, Jews, Agnostics, Buddhists, Pagans, Protestants, etc.? They can go to heaven just like I can. God's love and grace are limitless.
There is so much more I would love to tell you, especially regarding your other concerns but as I said I am not the most qualified. I would recommend that you talk with a priest about your struggles. God is not heartless and cruel, but gentle, kind and understanding, and I hope you will find that out for yourself.

    • @MrRezillo

@@claireevans7014 Claire, thank you for taking the time to respond at length to my ranting. I get everything you're saying, really; about God giving us free will, to accept or reject His love. What bothers me that Hell is eternal, forever. God did us no favors by making us immortal if a lot of us are going to suffer in Hell --forever. It's the 'forever' part that makes the Christian God a cruel monster.
And let's say you go to Heaven and look around and see which of your friends and loved ones aren't there, wouldn't that make you sad? Or, when you go to Heaven do you get some kind of spiritual "lobotomy"that erases your memory or makes you not care about the souls that didn't make it? I'm sorry; I still don't see how I can love God if the fear of Hell is in the back of my mind. But thanks for your concern; don't feel you have to respond further if this is too tedious. Thanks again for your care and concern.

@@MrRezillo Hi, I am also not really qualified to answer your question but one way someone said to think about Hell is that the people who go there hate God. If you hate someone or something you aren't going to want to be around them. In a very strange way the people in Hell would suffer more if they were in Heaven with God forever.
I don't really know how to answer your question about if we will know if our friends or family are in Heaven with us. But I do know that God promised us that in Heaven we will be completely satisfied beyond measure. I think this is where the Faith part comes in.
      Good day ~ Rockfeather

@@MrRezillo You're right. Forever is a long time. And it is hard to think of people in hell forever. I have such an admiration for your compassion and empathy for souls who may suffer forever. Your struggles with love for a God who allows this to happen is evidence of what a compassionate person you are. The question of why would God make us immortal if it means some of us will be in hell is not one I can easily answer because I am not God. But we have to remember that originally, our being immortal was an all-around good thing. Everybody would be with God forever. And if that was the case, He was doing us a big favor. But it isn't like that anymore. Sin, sadness, and yes Hell entered the world in the Fall, and we all suffer because of it. All I can say to you is this. If God would bother to send His Son to be born as a baby and die as a man just to give us a chance and to try to repair what was broken, we can have faith that he does not see us as inconsequential sinners who deserve Hell. He has shown how He feels about Hell. He detests it. If He had no concern for our eternal home than he wouldn’t bother about us at all or try to save us.
But He bothers a lot about us. Through our free will, He has placed limits upon himself that He will not violate. But with that free will comes a greater capacity for real love, which is not brainwashing or programming, but a choice. He does everything possible within the limits He has placed upon Himself to enable us to make the choices that will lead to happiness which only can come from him.
It is an emotional thing to think about. I am not trying to debate you in any way, shape or form. I am only trying to communicate to you that God is not one for torture or eternal suffering. That is why his dominion and residence are in heaven, not hell. Satan has made hell his dominion, and there is a nonstop struggle for each dominion to grow their population if you want to think of it that way.
You also mentioned struggling with feeling sad at relatives and friends not being in heaven with you. This is certainly hard to think about, and I can imagine even feeling sorry for souls in Hell who aren't relatives. This is something I would suggest speaking with a priest about because it is more personal to you, and because it is theoretical I'm afraid I don’t have a good answer besides what Rock Mint Swirl said, which is why I would advise speaking with a priest about your anxiety, regardless of your current scruples because he will have a greater answer for you. But your trouble with loving a God who seems like a monster is a much greater concern, and what you really need an answer for.
With that, I would caution to you be honest but careful as you examine your own scruples with heaven, hell, and God. If this is your only real and deep struggle with your faith, persist in finding the truth. Research, discuss, pray, and listen. If you persist you will find the answer.
You seem like a very kind and empathetic person, and I will pray that you find answers, truth, and peace in it. God bless you.

Being Protestant or Catholic won't give you Salvation unless your trusting on Christ's finished work on the cross. Jesus Christ's cleanseth from all sin [ 1 john v 7] It does not say in the Bible that the Catholic Church started 2000 years ago but that they became Christians first in Antioch [ Acts 11 v 26] Salvation is a free gift not something you can earn [ Ephesians 2 v 8] as the Catholic Church teaches. No amount of going to any Church, Mass going, good works or Law keeping can save you [ Galatians 2 v 16] You said not to fear Hell, God's word says different, fear him who is able to destroy both body and soul in Hell [ Mathew 10 v 28] Mathew 7 v 13- says Enter in the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way easy that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. To be saved you have to believe first [ Acts 16 v 31] You don't need to have Knowledge of any Church or learn about saints to gain Salvation [ 1 Corinthians 3 v 19] It is knowledge in Christ and the truth in his word you need [ 2 Timothy 3 v 16]

Coptics trace their gospel back to 54AD from the Catholic Bishop of Alexandra Saint Mark so I doubt it is false and what does first century apostolic Christians have to do with a 19th century American?
I doubt you understand what Luther's theology means to your definition as a human being, even thou you signed up to it.
You have no freewill. Luther - "There is no free will for humanity because any will they might have is overwhelmed by the influence of sin".
Luther - "Man is like a horse. Does God leap into the saddle? The horse is obedient and accommodates itself to every movement of the rider and goes whither he wills it. Does God throw down the reins? Then Satan leaps upon the back of the animal, which bends, goes and submits to the spurs and caprices of its new rider... Therefore, necessity, not free will, is the controlling principle of our conduct".
So man cannot commit Evil nor Good, when the Devil rides you Evil is the result, when Christ rides you Good is the result. You have no freewill to gain salvation nor damnation.
So by Luther logic an outside force is needed, Luther - "There is justification, seeing someone as righteous before God, which is accomplished by having faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. ..." "Furthermore, it meant that a person was not made righteous before God by their works or good deeds".
Do you see any of this Justification when Jesus is in Matthew mediating your judgement with works of charity to your neighbors obeying Christ's second commandment, I sure don't there is no empirical evidence that Luther is right.

The Islamic faith is STRONGLY based on the Koran/Quran. The OT and NT are not big in Isalm. Jesus is just one of the many prophets. Worshipping or depicting Jesus would be seen as a major sin because Islam believes in the ONE undivided god, and depicting Jesus or Mary would be considered Idolatry. You will notice no depictions in mosques. Catholicism and Christianity in general are incompatible with Islam. Islam has a SHOCKINGLY NEGATIVE/HOSTILE VIEW of non-Muslims and people who leave Islam.

We'll know about that once we die. You believe in your quran but we don't. We believe in our Bible but you don't. So the point is, we'll only get to know who's right once we die. 😉

"Apostles established in the first century."
    First-century sources: 0
Well, fortunately, the claims of the "gospels" are mundane and usual, not astounding and extraordinary, right?
    Oops.
