He would walk in wearing his bow tie, button down collared shirt slacks nice shoe. He’ld go in the bathroom to change into his oil change clothes. Out he would come in his work shoes, shined the night before, his oldest pair of blue pants with oil stains freshly pressed, flannel button down collared shirt and his oldest bow tie and out to the garage and under the car and hood we would go. You can slide on the cardboard better than a creeper and it protects the concrete from spills. If you don’t have a major spill you can use the same piece of cardboard over and over.

    Here's my Professional Homeowner Tip: Anytime you wind-up with a big cardboard box, keep it and use it as a drip tray under the vehicle to keep the mess off the driveway.
    I started helping my dad when I was a pre-teen. Been doing my own now, ever-since... 30-some years. Even including the drive to the autoparts store, I can get the job done in less time and for less money that a Quicky-Lube shop. I usually try to have a complete change-worth of stuff on-hand, so I can change it when I'm ready without the store trip, then replace it after I do the change.

    • @corey6393
      @corey6393 3 года назад +1

      Same here. I started maintaining our mowers, snowblowers and vehicles at about 11 years old. Dad knew how to do it all, but he wanted me to earn my keep, and learn what it takes I guess. The other bonus about doing this stuff yourself is that you get a chance to take a good look around under there, with a trained eye, for anything damaged, missing, or out-of-place. The kid at the quick lube place doesn't know your vehicle, doesn't have much time, and may not know what he is looking at/for. Not his fault really, just goes with the territory.

    I have a few tips on the oil change that you may or may not want to use. I used to have a job where I had to drive a great many miles and had to often change my oil when not at home, towards that end I developed methods to do it so it wouldn't be as messy. It was especially a big deal since I was often not in a place where I could wash up afterwards and who wants to be soaked in oil for a couple of hours till they are home.
    First, I used to use the bags that a newspaper is delivered in on rainy days to cover my arm so I wouldn't get oil on myself (oil is not only filthy is is not good for the skin after all).
    Second, I lined the oil pan with a garbage bag so that I wouldn't have nearly as much trouble with cleaning the pan, spillage, etc. (it started since I had to transport the oil back from where I changed it beside the road and who wants that all over the inside of the vehicle or to have that sludge force you to buy oil pans all the time.
    Finally, I also used either plastic sheeting or cardboard (the right cardboard will soak up the small amount of oil so that it is not a problem) on the ground or floor around the area so that I wouldn't have a great deal of oil to clean up... because if done right it is all contained and you can change the oil without getting any on yourself or all on the shop floor. If done right the entire process becomes mess free and cleanup is a matter of about a couple of minutes at most and usually less.
    Anyway, for me I got a "fizz" out of being able to change the oil without wearing any of it and being able to clean up almost instantly without oil stains on the cement. Mileage varies... so take the suggestions for whatever you think they are worth.
    Edit: You should let the oil cool to the point it won't melt the plastics which does vary with a low point being over 150 degrees generally speaking and tend to be in the 200+ degree range in general. Though oil in a vehicle if you warm it a couple of minutes tends to not reach either point.

    • @heavysnow8616
      @heavysnow8616 3 года назад

      With all that plastic and hot oil, it would melt. Carry some waterless hand cleaner and a old shirt and get to it. McDonald’s has a bathroom if needed.

    • @rheath1967
      @rheath1967 3 года назад

      @@heavysnow8616 you want it below 200 degrees generally speaking (because that is the temp most plastic melts) or yes it would melt but I never liked crawling straight under my van at those temps so I let it cool somewhat. Additionally, there were no McDonald's open along that route at that time of night. As I said, mileage varies, perhaps I was lucky but I never had a problem with it either.

    Tip#6 Always lay a large piece of cardboard or a drop cloth under the vehicle during an oil change. Spills and splashes are inevitable.
    I have had great luck over the years with using basic oil, quality filters, and frequent changes depending on the use of the vehicle. My local NAPA is 6 blocks away, and every April and October they have a filter sale. Most of what I use is 50% off the regular price, so I check my inventory and order enough to keep two of everything at hand. NAPA gold filters are made by WIX, and are top notch.

    I use Rotella Gas Truck oil for my 6.2L F250. Best stuff.
    ALWAYS use the Motorcraft filter for Ford trucks though. Nothing beats them and most alternative brand filters don't have a proper anti drain back valve. Without the right filter you can get top end noise on startup as the oil drains down to the pan instead of sitting up in the heads.
    I'm planning on a 2022 F250/F350 with the 7.3L. That oil filter location sealed the deal. Best design I've seen in a long time.

    I've been doing my own oil changes for the last 30 years. I bought a brand new 2020 GMC AT4 with the new 3.0 diesel. It requires a specific oil which is ONLY made by GMC right now. When I bought it, I had a "free" oil change voucher but never used it for the first 12k miles. On what was my 3rd change I decided to go to the dealership and use the voucher figuring "It's an oil change...how can a DEALERSHIP screw THAT up" Well...lemme tell you how. They shorted me a quart. Yep...I got home, was cleaning my engine bay and just doing what would have been my normal things during my own change...so I pulled the dipstick and VIOLA! One quart low. I called the dealership, told them they only added 6 quarts when it takes 7. They apologized profusely and brought a quart to the house. I guess it will be ANOTHER 30 years before I take it in again!lol! Oh....and along with AMSOIL and Lucas...try Schaffer's. It's the ONLY lubricants we use at the engine/machine shop I work at and every new or rebuilt engine is filled with it. Great stuff!

    Man, I've been changing oil for about 23 years. I got complacent with the filter ring. Late last year, I doubled it up. You can still see where I changed my oil going down the road. I won't ever forget to check that again.

    Good stuff! Also worth considering is replacing the sump plug with a permanent fixture having a tethered cap and internal check valve. Valve is opened by a screw-on fiiting at the end of a drain tube. Insert free end of tube into collapsible plastic jug, attach fitting, and watch the show! Now, even the hazards you demonstrate aren't a good enough excuse for delaying this important maintenance . . . and I was amazed that the volume of used oil was not at all reduced from previous levels (properly gloved, you can safely warm the oil up quite a bit -- of course the filter is a different story). Mine came from Texas . . . Valvomax.

    Here in Tokyo, I used to change my own oil, but getting rid of the old oil is a huge hassle, and it actually cost me more money than going to my Subaru dealership. I take my microvan in twice a year and they do a 40 point check (looking for things to fix) and an oil change for about 60% of what it would cost me to do it myself and with the extra hassle of getting rid of the old oil I just let them do it. The oil is the oil that came in the van from the factory so while it's not Amsoil, it's decent quality. Case in point about doing it yourself, my battery was almost 8 years old heading into the winter, when I had my oil change done the dealership pointed this out and said they had load tested the battery and it just barely passed. With us heading into winter (not that it gets that cold here in Tokyo) they suggested that I change the battery, I asked how much, they replied $190.
    I said no thanks.
    I bought a new battery for the van, the exact same battery that had lasted for 8 years, from Hitachi, made in Japan, online for $35, and I installed it in 15 min, professional Home Owner Style!
    Cheers from Tokyo!

    A little trick my dad taught me on how to get every drop of oil out of the container is to put the cap back on the quart after it’s just dripping out and let it sit upside down somewhere for awhile. Then take the cap off over the funnel and watch the rest come out. Usually a capful for each quart. It doesn’t make much of a difference but that way you use every drop.

    • @davecaselli1957

      The filter is filled into the OUTLET side. If any odd crud came out of the oil bottle it will be pumped right into the engine. Virtually NO chance of this in the real world. Just theoretically a negative. COULD put oil in the filter through the inlet holes. I wonder if anyone does that.

    • @zapityzapzap
      @zapityzapzap 3 года назад

      If your vehicle has a vertical filter that can be filled, it won't really make much of a difference. Now when you start dealing with industrial engine applications, the oil filter can easily hold nearly a quart of oil so it can take awhile to prime that which may starve head components of oil. Now most automotive applications...oil filters are small enough that it's not something to worry about.

After the two years were up I priced out doing it myself along with the special tools you need on a Toyota and it would take me 20 years of oil changes to break even. The dealership can deal with it from here on out.

    you would not believe what I have seen. most shops out there can't do something as simple as an oil change. 2009 F150 I was doing an oil change and found a MoPar filter on there. for those of you that don't know MoPar makes OEM performance parts for chrysler vehicles. the owners got a life time maintenance agreement through their dealership which was a chrysler dealership and they bought the truck used. so this dealership did free oil changes for them, but they were putting the wrong parts on the truck, it was all MoPar parts. and when I drained out the oil I found metal shavings, old gasketing material, polymerized oil, and dirt. they never actually drained the oil, they ran a tube down the shaft for the dipstick and sucked out the oil from the top of the engine.
    2003 dodge dakota. I got receipts from all sort of oil change places. they either put in the wrong oil or they put in the wrong amount, on some of them it's both.
