A great start to life back in The First Division, ironically v the side who'd helped condemn us to relegation from the top flight, three years earlier. Revenge was sweet! Interesting also that in goal for Everton that day was Jim McDonagh, who later of course appeared for us, while I guess you had to feel a touch of sympathy for poor Billy Wright, what after his spectacular OG, for our third of the afternoon ....
Oit is funny how these things come around. Allardyce and Mcdonagh had left my club, Bolton, after we were relegated and you came up. Strange to see them in opposition straight away after many years playing alongside. Whitworth had a spell with us later too, and Allardyce came back for an unsuccessful 2nd stint in 85. Didnt know at the time , that by 87 we would be in the 4th div. Something a lot better about this sort of football from this era , it seems to " belong" if yhats ghe right word, to the fans a lot more than now.
Great game
