That was a fun adventure. Cool trail. Rope assist too, adds to the adventure! That bad part about hiking down first is you have to come back up to get back Awesome slot canyon/caves. Cool to see the bats. Awesome rock formations, swirls, and colors. Cool video. Lots of fun. Take care and have a great day.

That’s how Big South Fork is. The roads run on the ridge tops. Most every thing is down from there. At the end of a hike there is always a tough uphill on tired legs. You ain’t going to see these things any other way though. It’s all worth it though.
      Thanks Steve. I appreciate it!
You and Kristy have a wonderful New Year ahead!

Very nice day indeed with good people. Yep about a 70 degree swing in a week. Amazing formations so close to the parking lot. Great shot of owl at end.

Nothing but good things on this hike. That owl just sat there and looked at us for several minutes. Then it silently flew off over the hill. It was beautiful.

Amazing area. The cave was awesome and I absolutely love the falls area and scramble you did. That rhododendron and the tree was amazing to see. And I think you said you saw an owl. So beautiful. The window area was beautiful too. 👍💓

This is a jam packed hike of less than two miles. None of it has an official trail to it. There should be! It deserves some attention for sure. Thank you for watching Nicole.
We’re going off-trail into the deep backcountry this weekend to search for waterfalls. I’m looking forward to that!
Take care and have a very awesome New Year ahead!

Another great adventure Papaw. I loved seeing the Great Horn Owl.They're so quiet when the fly. We use to have one in the woods behind our house. You could never hear them, but I'd hear the leaves making noise as he took off. Owl's are awesome birds. Thank you.

Thank you Sue. We had a great day for sure. We try our best to leave things as we find them. Love and respect the natural world. Sometimes I believe we are gifted with something unexpected to make our hikes better. The owl was one of those gifts. We were done with our hike, only a hundred yards form the parking area and our vehicles and there it was! It sat there and was almost posing for us. Then it silently flew away. Seeing the owl was icing on the cake, so to speak. It was awesome!
Have a great New Year Sue. Stay healthy and safe!

We saw everything on this hike in less than two miles. It was off-trail and rugged in places but we’ll worth the effort. The owl at the end was the “icing on the cake’ so to speak. It was so beautiful!
Thanks for the comment. Hopefully WOY will make their was here someday and enjoy BSF too. I’d be thrilled to help you with anything I can. Take care, stay safe and have a great New Year!

WOW! Devils Cave was truly awesome! Oh you know what Barney Fife said about them bats and that was they'll fly in your hair and lay their eggs and you'll go crazy! Those ropes remind me of going up the east side of Grandfather as they have them too. Fantastic day in the BSF!

Devils Cave is only 1/2 mile from a major trailhead. That's not a park service trail to it. It's worn out by people just hiking out to see it. It sure is amazing! I was careful not to get the bats flying around. It pays to wear a hat too! Thank you Jim!

Y'all had a great day for an outing. especially after the cold snap we went through. I bet it felt like an early spring day. That little off-trail adventure packs a lot into a small area, doesn't it? I know roughly where you're at, gonna have to explore there one day myself if I get the opportunity. Sure is some neat stuff. I like seeing them Liesegang bands. They amaze me whenever I do see them. Awesome day you had Papaw!

    • @papawinthewoods
      @papawinthewoods  2 года назад +1

It was a jam packed hike, clocking in at less than 2 miles! Kind of rugged but not overly strenuous. Just a lot of fun. one of the Liesegang bands was really rusty. It had to have an extra large iron content. On Monday I did the intro to a video at East Rim Overlook. It was windy, snow flurries flying with temps in the mid 20s. 3 days later I did the intro to this video from the same spot. The temp was in the low 50s! I had a light jacket and a t-shirt on. What a difference 3 days made. Thanks Karl. Hopefully you'll get back out here this year sometime. We have some hiking to do! Have a great New Year!

Thanks so much! In my videos I try to show the way to the features I hike to. I’m glad it’s working!
Devils Cave isn’t far at all. It’s an absolutely amazing place! If I could say one more thing, it would be to go on a sunny day when the sun is straight up in the sky. You’ll get the awesome rays of light shining down through the cracks. It gives it a surreal effect. You’ll love it either way!
Take care Alloy-3242, and be safe.

Would be nice to mention where this is. I know you are going to say "Devils cave, east rim, blah blah blah." Which state??? I google search it took me to Florida Devils den.
Eventually, its in Tennessee I guess. Just would have been nicer to not search is all.

My apologies for not being clear about that. Big South Fork is a National Recreation Area in Tennessee and Kentucky. It’s 125,000 thousand acres of very remote wilderness. If you take into account its bordered by other protected areas, Pickett State Park, Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Areas in Tennessee and the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky, it’s well over 200,000 thousand acres. It has literally hundreds of arches, waterfalls and other features. It’s a paradise for outdoor lovers.

@@onenewworldmonkey Stop in the next time you’re in the area. Our winters have a few zero degree nights, but they’re few. The average daytime temperature in the winter is in the mid forties. Believe it or not, it’s the heat and humidity on the summer months that are tough. Our area is sparsely populated, property is inexpensive and it’s an outdoor lovers dream. Life is just slower here. You could do a lot worse than settle here. Check out the small towns of Stearns, Ky. Jamestown, Tn. and Oneida, Tn. Big South Fork is nestled in between these three small towns. I don’t want to live anywhere else.
