- This is my favorite Dream Theater song and is arguably Dream Theater's most impressive feat. It features a great, spacey intro, memorable melodies, challenging solos, and a powerful ending. Not to mention the points you'll get by playing a 24-minute song.

Fun fact; during the lines "trapped inside this octavarium" James pushed his voice beyond its limit; these notes are higher than his usual range. At the very end you can hear the strain and effort in his voice. I God damn love this band; they really do go above and beyond the norm for what a rock band is. The fact that harmonix themselves never made this song available in some way. Wanna talk rock bands? Dream Theater is probably the most technically brilliant there ever was, and this is likely the most challenging song ever written... Maybe besides The Dance of Eternity in terms of the rhythm section.

The last movement to this song is just too beautiful. Listening to this once should be on everyone ever's bucket list.

Change of Seasons is certainly a possibility. Always makes me happy to hear people are getting into the band because of my charts.

By some miracle bass somehow gets higher than guitar
That’s why John myung uses a 6 string bass, so he can hit those really high notes on the 6th C string

It's played on an instrument called a Continuum. There are videos of Jordan Rudess playing it live on RUclips.

Man, I really wish I had the EA disc version of this game, I can't do customs with my digital version :(
+HaloMillennium It sucks, i also had the digital version but i finely tried and got the ea version but if they export RB3 then at least i can with the digital version.
Anyway if you end up trying to buy it i would recommend trying to find one that has a picture of the game taken with a phone or camera and has the ea logo on it.
Try not buy a one with a picture taken off the Internet, if you buy one with a picture taken off the internet then it could be the mad catz one.

Like which parts? All keyboard and guitar parts are charted on their respective instruments.
In the very beginning, there is a guitar solo written into the keyboard part.

That sounds cool, but how do we know that he used that in the studio?
There is no possible way for a guitar to produce the level of bending that was done in the intro. Guitars can bend notes to only 2-3 semitones, while he was bending over 12 in some areas.
Additionally Wikipedia also says he used the continuum but I see no source on that.
And this is why Rock Band 3 should still do dlc

Am I the only one here who thinks Dream Theater had a degree of ELP influence? I would ask whether Jordan Rudess had a degree of influence from Keith Emerson, but it is hard to be a synthesizer player and _not_ have such influence.
Jordan Rudess has said in countless interviews that Emerson was one of his main inspirations. He produced a cover of "Tarkus" that you can find on RUclips.

as a drummer i am so highly pleased with the way you charted this a couple this i would do differently, mainly cymbal stuff, but i'm like overly satisfied with all the charts. i made this song for myself on frets on fire. making the drums, keyboard, and guitar all on expert took me a full week like 12 hours a day and the fact you did pro keys blows my mind.

how much are the solo's worth when you get 100% mainly curious about the main keyboard solo halfway threw. on my FOF chart its 80K!
I'm not sure how much they're worth. I did get 100% on the pro keys solo once but I didn't check the score. I think there's a formula, like # of notes multiplied by something, I don't know. And thanks for the comment. :D

+David Kim This video is just a chart preview so people can see what it looks like. No one I knew (at the time) had Rock Band autoplay, which automatically plays the notes for you.

Well, with all due respect, this song doesn't exactly end in a "big rock ending" sort of fashion, haha. BREs are typically used in place of the spammy, "freakout"-type endings that would be unreasonable for the player to play note-for-note.
There isn't an easy way to end Octavarium in a big rock fashion. And besides, the story ends with root of all evil ;)

Nerd In A Box Don't get me wrong, Octavarium is one of my favorite song from dream theater and it bring tears in my eyes when i listen to it.
Problem is, that song was made with the multitracks you can get from the band, it's easier to chart individually so I can understand why they doing it with those.
Same with the 2 full albums they've done so far (Images & Words and Scenes from A memory)
I just hate the way it sound, it's completly butchered to me, you can compare with the album version, I m sure you can hear the difference

I never really have listen to the album version before as I mostly listen to songs in the game.
I like to play Octavarium but I have not really listen to it when I'm not playing the game.
I might buy the song one day.
+Fanf13 You're completely right. The C3 guys always tend to fuck up the mix when they use multitracks, almost without exception.
+FinderofNemo I think that's partly due to how the multitracks are provided. When giving the multitracks, it usually doesn't include the subtle ways in which the instruments are combined to make the mix sound "full" if that makes sense. We're just given the instrument tracks. So a lot of times there's not a ton we can do to make the mix sound as good as if you were listening to the song by itself.
