Having lived in Wales as a kid, and now near the Welsh border, I grew up calling Llandrindod Wells just Llandod, spent many a Sunday on the lakes there. I won’t comment on some of the pronunciation of the other place names, but I probably wouldn’t have attempted them without practice and research, but a nice video anyway. Love Barmouth.
Lawd - much worse than I thought it would be when I read your post! Welsh is a phonetic language ie written as pronounced. Learn the rules and apply them!
On a hike through the Mount Snowden National Park we stopped at a village called Betws -y-Coed. We went into a cafe for a coffee and a snack and were discussing how to pronounce the name of the village. I said, well, why don’t we ask a local. We called the waitress over and asked her how to pronounce the name of this place. With a very serious look on her face and speaking loudly and slowly she said ‘The Alpine Coffee Lounge’. She was a bit miffed when we all just about fell off our chairs laughing.😂
I put a like on your comment . However there is no Mount Snowdon or Mount Snowdon National Park. The mountain itself is simply Snowdon (in Welsh Yr Wyddfa ) The park is Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri or in English Snowdonia National Park.
Take 20 minutes out and watch Michael Sheen’s ‘For Wales see England’ might understand why the independence for Wales is growing..........Anybynwydd 🏴........Hay is a cracking town
Hello i am from Singapore i am 40 years old. First of all thank u so much for uploading this useful video about Wales. Honestly i ever been to UK i been to Birmingham in 2014 i went there for my girlfriend's wedding.
I would have loved to hear him pronounce Llanfair ym Muallt. Most can’t even manage the anglicised version, Builth Wells. I’m also having a hard time understanding who voted for those particular towns when Wales has so much more to offer than a few tourist traps.
Oh dear, much criticism and little offered by way of help... First thing to realise - and not only about Welsh I might add, is that different languages often have different alphabets. Welsh has several double letters such as ch, dd, ll, rh, th and so on - that count as single letters - though you might be forgiven for not knowing how to pronounce them all! Y and w are both consonants or vowels (plus a, e, i, o, u in the vowel category) . K is one of several letters the Welsh alphabet doesn't have - the sound is represented by C, which is never pronounced as ss.... Some of the letters found in both languages sound quite different in each! Spa towns often have the word 'Wells' in their names - even in English. e,g, Tenbury Wells, Malvern Wells, Royal Tunbridge Wells, etc. Welsh people have a fairly distinctive beat in the way they pronounce all of the syllables, the emphasis of the word often falling on the middle or penultimate syllable... Now, can you begin to understand their criticisms, yet... For the record, I am Scottish, not Welsh! But we all must begin somewhere - and life is nothing if it's not a learning curve... It's a lovely film otherwise though, you can take heart in that much, I hope!
Please, if you're going to talk about Wales, take some advice about how to pronounce the place names. Some of the pronunciations in this series are laughable.
Ceredigion is pronounced with a 'K' at the beginning. Not a soft 'C' or 'S' sound. good video though. polish up on the pronunciation, maybe though but understood that can be quite difficult for the non speaker. A double L as in LL (predominantly at the start of a word or name) sounds like clearing ones throat or back of the tongue. Lots of mouth lubrication helps too. Saliva is essential to pull some words off in Welsh speaking perfection. Good video tho'. Lot's of LOVE from Wales anyhow Learning Canteen'.! CARU
He manages to get Cardigan right but Ceredigion wrong, the C at the beginning of Ceredigion is pronounced like the English letter K same as the letter C at the beginning of Cardigan so it's pronounced Keredigion not Seredigion.
C'mon, if you're doing a video on Welsh towns, please spend 10 minutes research finding out how to pronounce them. Machynlleth is a tricky one, but "Ceredigion" is easy enough, and it's not "Serrydijion". The lack of basic research on pronunciation doesn't inspire hope for the accuracy of the rest of the video.
KIDWELLY ?!? My Lord, someone who created that rank definitely NEVER been to this S**THOLE! What about Caernarfon, Denbigh, Llangollen, Conwy, Llandudno, St. David's, Holywell, Llanidloes, Aberystwyth, Dolgellau, Betws-y-Coed, Abergavenny, Ruthin, Aberareon, Fishguard, Laugharne, Monmouth, Harlech or Crickhowell?
@@chrisrutter6015 yes, the area of Brynford Villas, Town Centre and Greenfield with St Winfred's Well especially is very cute town with lively architecture to compare to many others similar size ones in Wales
Nice film, narration not so much. The beautiful Welsh language was absolutely MASSACRED. Surely they could have asked an actual Welshman how the words are pronounced. 2/10
Cardigan is a horrible place, rugs and crime are rampant. Twll dŷn y wlad. Kidwelly isn't a nice place either. There are far more beautiful and interesting towns in Wales
I was in Cardigan for 6 months , i must have missed the crime you are talkimg abaout . I found it very pretty and the locals were lovely . The Nature park by the River Teifi is beautiful .
1:12 “for it doesn’t rank so good in that regard.” Neither does your English grammar! And as much as I love Porthmadog, its architecture hardly stands out as anything of note. Ynganiad ofnadwy!

The Welsh pronunciation was something 😅
AWFUL. Consider the Welsh population and tutor the narrators please!

Llandrindod in Wells? Wells is in Somerset! It’s Llandrindod Wells, like Tunbridge Wells! Spa town.

Need some work on your Welsh place names. Even 10 minutes worth to check out how you pronounce the places listed would make the video watchable.

Clicked the video for the curiosity, stayed for the pronouncistion 😅
I'm more surprised by the omissions than by the pronunciations. A strange list.
Welsh pronunciation is awful.

Had to stop the tape. The horrible pronunciation of the Welsh names was too bad. To make no effort is an insult to Welsh people.
