- AMC's early trunnion suspension is sort of like today's strut suspension. This video shows a safe way to remove the tall spring on top of the trunnion. Tools & Lakeside Merch below:

The U bolt safety idea is very smart. Next time I use my spring compressors, I will add some U bolts as a precaution. Great tip on using a rubber mallet! This is why we watch your videos! We always are smarter after watching! Thanks, Jerry!
I appreciate you checking it out Uncle Mark - have a good weekend 👍🏈😀
@@LakesideAutobody You have a good weekend as well!
The U bolt is genius. Makes the compressors a whole lot less scary.
It made it much more enjoyable :)
those ubolts are a lifesaver
😀 I felt much safer using them for sure.
in the uk we have sets where you tighten and loosen the thread bar, so top is right thread and bottom is left. I have never thought of those safety U bolts, thats is a very good idea!
Thanks Avtovaz - I think they really are the solution to keeping you safe while compressing these types of springs. Have a good weekend :)
I was rummaging through a bin of 5/8" hardware recently and saw remnants of an old spring compressor I made years ago. Truly one of the stupider things I've done!!! Thankful I still have all my fingers etc. Looking at this one, all nice and pretty, with good solid hooks, safety U-bolts, all in a nice case too - and just 30 BUCKS! It would be a total no-brainer to buy and use it should the need arise again. Thanks Jerry!
You're welcome Icar - thanks for the story. Enjoy the weekend my friend :)
I believe the cones that the spring ends sit in have an ear with a hole in it providing a place to hook into with the AMC special compression tool that once was available. It was nothing more than 2 pieces of ready rod with a hook on each end to engage into the holes to compress the spring from each end. Although the ears are looking pretty rusty but the still should be able to handle the force.
👍
Nice demo Jerry! Nice to see you working on your AMC.
If you hold the nut stationary and turn the bolt, the hook will move along the threads and not bind and you won't have to hit it with a hammer. This helps to reduce the risk of the compressor coming dislodged.
Great demo, those coil springs can be really worrisome and a nail biter without the right tools. Thanks and take care
Thanks for checking it out RG have a great weekend my friend 👍🏈😀
👍🏻Nice setup. Can never be too cautious when it comes to those springs!
Thanks for watching Michael - have a good weekend 🏈💯👍
Along with the other 76k subscriber's of your channel, I'm looking forward to these videos on your AMC. Thanks Jerry!
Thanks 67 - The engine is under construction right now at Michigan Engine Exchange. There were mouse nests in the cylinders even though the engine was together - ain't that crazy? Of course that was an extra cost - the urine rusted the pistons to the cylinders 🥴
Dang!! rodents are amazing!!

I'm in the middle of that job on my AMX getting them back in is the bitch.
Nice little video great job keep up the good work
Thanks for checking it out Brad - have a good weekend :)
I have to add those U-bolts to my old set. Coil springs can be very dangerous if the compressor lets go. I worked at a spring shop years ago that modified automotive coil springs. I witnessed many times an automotive coil spring shooting out of a hydraulic press under full compression after removing from the oven - it ain't pretty.
Thanks for the info BBM - sounds like it would be pretty crazy!
Interesting. Never delt with this type of suspension. Use of proper safety gear should be priority. Thanks jerry have agood week.
Thanks 👍 - you have a good weekend too my friend 💯👍😀
