False. Knowledge is what brings value to many professions. One could easily name countless careers that require knowledge that you can’t just look up online. Lawyer, Doctor, Engineer, all those professions require experience and knowledge traded through education and offered by the college systems. You can pretend that you could learn anything online, but you can only truly dip your toes in by researching online.

That's true for some degrees, but for many it's also the fact that universities will make it easy for you to learn. You'll have structured classes, prograssion of concepts, a well defined set of what is useful in the field etc. Obviously You can learn all of that yourself, but uni is just way easier

Degrees are not McDonald's menus, it's a little more complicated than 'getting the paper'... A degree has requirements that package together various courses. Some of these courses, you don't want to take but it's a degree requirement to take them. Having the paper shows that you are able to accept responsibility for seeing something through... And for several years. That's not something you can just buy. There's a reason why second year registration is about a fifth of first year. Go through the process, get your degree, and then update.

A lot of college professors will let you AUDIT their classes LEGALLY if you just ask. They won't grade your homework, and you won't get a grade. But you will get to participate in the classroom lectures and discussions. Some of them require you to be an enrolled student or campus employee, but a lot of them just appreciate that you want to learn and you don't care about the final grade or certifications involved in the paid version of the class. So a lot of them will let you sit in and learn as long as you don't make any extra work for them, even if you're not actually a college student or campus employee.

The truth is, that having a degree will *always* give you an advantage over others. And guess what? You can also get work experience with a degree as well. What he says about simply trespassing on campus and listening in on lectures is true. Totally possible. Though I'd recommend not doing it in the first week, when it may be obvious that a full class is overfull. Once you get past that first week, people start dropping or skipping, so it's less obvious.
Also, don't do it if the class size is small, like 20-50 people.

    • @goranpersson7726
      @goranpersson7726 6 месяцев назад +1

I'm like 90% sure that he isnt actually trespassing. you're not actually paying for the knowledge when you enroll, you're paying for the staff to endorse you. basically you in most cases can legally just walk in and listen to the lectures but that wont come with a degree, the degree is actually what education sells, the degree is what employees want because it means that someone else has confirmed that you know what you say that you do.
sure the company that is hiring can check for themselves but that can take time that could be better spent teaching their new hire the specifics of the job instead of double checking if they actually know the basics of the subject.
so they outsource it, if you go to a college or whatever you get the knowledge and the college when they hand you a degree are basically saying "we're willing to stake our business and standing on the fact that this guy over here knows this subject to atleast x level"

You can always learn new things while AT the job, hiring people who you know already posses the initial skills to do the job is key here. You'll rarely find IT companies hiring without degrees in nordic countries for this reason.

Wouldn't say anything. Depends on where in Australia and what you're studying. A few of my tutors checked attendance (where it was graded). It's kinda important in classes with group projects, so they might check there, or in classes where engagement is a concern and they're tweaking the course.
Also, some classes are so tiny that the lecturer knows everyone taking the subject, so you physically cannot sneak in and may get asked to leave. (And yes, I have seen someone get kicked out)
Generally, Australian first year courses with lots of students at big unis are pretty safe bet though, and if you make some friends who share their timetable with you, you could probably get away with sneaking into their tuts.
But in a 4th year course of an unpopular major where they have like 13 students... Tough luck bro.

I'll also say comp sci lectures are either highly abstracted and thus not completely necessary to understand, or they reference technology that will be outdated in a few years if it isn't already. you can get most knowledge for free however a business is less likely to hire you if you can't actually prove to them that you do know what they need you to know, which something like a previous workplace listed can do as they can call em up and ask, a college degree is essentially that the college is saying "ye he knows this thing".

I regularly attended my friends' classes in their school back in the high school days, then I was a regular in my then gf's uni, went to other groups' lectures in my uni, but you'd be hard pressed to find me in my classes, let alone lectures, lol.
The fact that Michael had enough brain cells to rub together to figure out that you can learn programming for free online doesn't necessarily make him an actual genius, but certainly puts him squarely above average, because it turns out average people have no idea you can do that. Still, he's a fun and cool guy and his content is thoroughly enjoyable.

Technically, most lecture on university campuses are open to the public, and they do state that freely, you don’t have to be enrolled in anything to sit in on a lecture. You just can’t attend tutorials or assessments without being enrolled in the course.

I Got a job working for a space tech company with no degree, just self teaching. A lot of Employers like the fact you have the tenacity to learn something by yourself

I had a friend about 40 years ago, who went to Temple University. He hated it. He told me he would go to a class that was in a stadium full of thousands of students and you could come and go as you please and listen to the lecture.
What he hated about it was that he never got to meet the professor.
There was no relationship between student and teacher.
He transferred to a smaller college, paid less money in tuition, and graduated.

This is the same level of thinking that got people into the music industry without a label. Just start your own label. Make your own movie. Publish your own book.
Just gotta learn the skill of entrepreneurship, and become a businessman.

For those blown away by this....auditing a class has been a thing for many many years.

You don’t have the break into a class. You can audit a class for free, you just don’t get credit for the class. When I went to college it wasn’t uncommon to have at least one person in the class auditing. It was usually an older person.

Specifically, comp-sci is this way. The majority of higher education careers need you to go to college and get a degree. But, as Michael mentioned, you can simply show a software development company your portfolio. If you have a quality portfolio of various projects, companies do not care where you came from or what degree you have.

That's why my college doesn't allow anyone without a student ID into the faculty lol

A friend of mine did that. He paid an old classmate of ours to go to lectures instead of him and take notes.
Friend gets notes. Classmate gets free lectures.

I was recently working on five different cars and there was always someone online with the same model and the same issue showing how to sort it out. Sometimes it was the simplest of tips, sometimes full step by step. Good people, helping out.
