    This has got to be one of my favorites of Danny's! The way he uses the narration, engine sounds, and crew chatter is genius, and is almost inspriring to watch as a railfan. I smile ear-to-ear whenever I watch this video.
    Thanks again Danny!

    I too spent a little time at Tampa union, and must admit I was disappointed to see no rolling stock on the track, not even a maintenance vehicle. I tripped over to the Plant diamond in time to see the late Tampa bound Amtrak 91, a short tanker train going to Mosaic, and Milleniumforce feeding squirrels in front of the museum lol

      cinthb cinthb Yes, I know it's hard to do these events, but the lack of any kind of trains this years was disappointing. Maybe next time.

    Danny, I have a question for you. Is CSX starting to do away with advance approach and medium advance approach? I noticed at the end of the video when Q237 came out of the siding, he called a medium approach medium. Is that because Q177 was still not far ahead enough for Q237 to get a medium clear? Hence, the medium approach medium?

    • @distantsignal
      @distantsignal  6 лет назад

      Exactly right, John. 177 was probably two blocks ahead. The signal at Coleman was telling 237 to proceed at medium speed thru the switch, then stay at medium speed until the next signal gives him new instructions. An Advance Approach would tell 237 to proceed but prepared to stop at second signal ahead, limiting him to 30MPH. It all depends on wiring. Each location is wired depending on its situation. I don't think CSX is eliminating Advance Approach as there are situations that need it. Don't know about Medium Advance Approach. I know of only one place in Florida that gives that indication and that's at Beaver Street Tower in Jax.

    Hi guys.The old ACL search light signals are very cool.There are 2 types of dispatcher controlled sidings on the SCL.The 2 head,for example on my trip with B.Dawkins on 178 Tampa to Jax at 0200 at Kissimee,we got red over spaced out yellow as you call it.Now that indication was our restricting.The dispatcher had control of the switch at both ends,but he does not have control of the siding track.Another example was the southbound south end of Dover.I've seen a double yellow there,to let you know he was gonna take you in the hole at Mango in advance to the distant signal for Mango at Seffner.

    • @distantsignal
      @distantsignal  9 лет назад

      SCL Pete In ACL searchlight territory, do those spaced out signals mean that there is a "virtual middle red signal"? Making a Red Over Yellow a SLOW APPROACH rather than a MEDIUM APPROACH?

    Hi Danny another great video. Here in OZ the dwarf signals are for industrial leads that one with the 5 lights means that there is two leads and shows the aspect for each one. When the trains over there stop at sidings and the engineer gets out is that so he can have a smoke or does it suit some other purpose. Here our train crews are not supposed to smoke in the cab so take a breather when they can.

    • @distantsignal

    Union Switch and Signal was one of the five contractors (including Colt, Remington-Rand, Ithaca Gun Company, and Singer Sewing Machine) to make M1911A1 pistols during World War II. The production blocks assigned to them in 1943 were between SN's 1,041,405 to 1096404. Colt duplicated 4,171 pistols in the 1088726-1092896 SN range. Since only 55,000 1911A1's were produced by US&S, they are highly collectible. The reason for the low production numbers is US&S was the last company awarded a government contract and as requirements were reduced in early 1943, the last contract awarded became the first to be cancelled. As a general rule, US&S produced high quality pistols. With the government-owned machine tooling already in place at US&S, they were offered a subcontract arrangement to produce M1 Carbine components. Only Singer produced fewer 1911A1's at 500 total production.
    In 1998, US&S merged with Ansaldo STS of Genoa Italy. (from Wikipedia)
    That dwarf signal will quickly become a railroader's collectors item. You might check with the railroad to see when it will be replaced, and see if you can get it.

    The spaced out signal was easier to read from a distance.Like that night to Sanford on 178,I called out "restricted" to Byron and he said it back to me in the cab.Kissimee and others like it were known as "controlled sidings" rather that "signaled sidings".Winston was listed in the time card as "double track",thats where you see 3 light signals to give medium speed indications.

    Danny, Another great video. I was wondering, why is it railfanning cameramen (almost) always seem to shoot a train on the opposite side of a block signal. ? I'm sure camera angles and sun location play a major role along with a 'safe' place to shoot the vid. However, I've always found the block signal being knocked down an interesting feature of railroading.
    Stay safe, Jerry

      Jerry Sinclair I agree with you 100%, Jerry. The only reason I'm not on that side every time is sometimes there's stuff in the way or it's not accessible other than by a long walk. I agree though. Much better to see that signal being knocked down.

    The south end of Lacoochee siding signals have been that way forever.The Absolute signal on the main used to have a inverted yellow triangle attached to the mast.That would allow for an Approach Limited into the Home signal at Owensboro which also had a inverted yellow triangle to allow for a Limited clear to proceed thru Jct switch to enter the AR main and head south.The dwarf signal from the siding had to have enough color lights to give an Approach medium into Owensboro Jct.

      SCL Pete I knew it had something to do with Owensboro!!!! But I've never found anyone who could explain it to me. That's great info Pete. Thanks! I guess CSX has gotten rid of all the yellow triangles. I've seen them in rule books, but never in the field. I'm just now learning about the spaced out ACL 2-search light signals. Gordon Deason tells me those 2-head signals give indications as if there were three heads. I'm researching it now.

    I never really understood just how important the Florida Funnel was to the state.. It's almost like Sabine Pass ship channel down here in Texas when something stops the flow.. The entire corridor feels it.

    how do you find the train codes and how do you know where they are going to

    • @csxfloridafunnelrailfan3065

      Calvin Corrigan because of CSX policy, train crews are required to call out their information over the radio at every signal installation. Train symbol, lead locomotive, signal indication and location name or milepost if it's an intermediate signal, track number and direction of movement. So it's pretty easy to get the train ID over the radio.

      Lacoochee didn't see any upgrades from the s line expansion a few years ago and the siding really isn't long enough to accommodate the Hunter Harrison era monsters anyways so I would say signal upgrades at lacoochee aren't on the priority list.
