Yes I'd totally love a video covering all the upcoming cycle infrastructure! I've actually been searching for this sort of exciting information but haven't been able to find much!
The 2025 "shape of things to come" video sounds great. It's so hard to know what's going on across London, but also makes a massive difference when you find a new link joins things up. In my case many of those are thanks to this channel. For example, I've been seeing some very exciting work north of Enfield on the New River which is not far from completion. As for taking the kids cycling, I progressed from seat on bike to a Circe Helios tandem and three epic trips cycling long distance, although I did have to resort to cake, ice cream and chocolate to get the Stoker to keep up their share of the work on several occasions!
Thanks for posting this route. I lived in Camberwell for 20 yrs and work in that building across Granary Square from the ice cream truck. I cycled there two times a week using most of the route you took. I live further south these days but still go through Camberwell to get to KX. I go around the Elephant & Castle on the eastern side though. Keep up the good work. You make London look like a cycling paradise ❤
Great video this week. Posted at Christmas - we all need ice cream!! Looking forward to more videos like this - in the sun. Thanks for all the videos this year - well 6 months as that is when I found your channel.
Great route around Elephant & Castle! I could never quite figure out a low traffic route. I've been avoiding cycling due to the cold weather but hopefully this will give me some motivation.
I agree, big advocate for gloves all year actually, if you fall you very rarely hit your head but you almost always use your hands battered hands from gravelly roads is not amusing...
glad to hear you're getting over your Covid. I haven't cycled this area of camberwell for a number of years so it's great to see the improvements Southwark have made. 7:33 Waitrose van had so much space it could just pull slightly into for a few seconds rather than driving straight at a cyclist with a small child on the back of the bike. Really annoys me when drivers decide, on your behalf, that there is enough room for you to squeeze down the side of them when they pass parked cars. Edit: I'm happy your son got his ice-cream at the end 😄
I loved this video! Thanks to Isaac, a real MVP. I'd love to see a new Infrastructure 2025 video as well. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Jon and everyone!
Very good route, the Southwark road closures to cars have made a big difference to cyclists - although I usually drive a car and the first part of your route used to be my back route! Nowadays to get to Kings Cross I get a train from Denmark Hill to St Pancras, which operates as a direct route at certain times of day.
Great to feel the sun and warmth of summer in the middle of December! Thank you and hope you're recovering well. Another up vote for the planned development video from me. Joyeuses fêtes, from Nice!
*Adorable endin to the video!* 🤙🏽⚡️🤟🏽⚡️👌🏽 Ever considered those dutch type cargo ones where the kids are in front not behind? Take up more space but I like them, not sure how well it works in London 😱
yeah I was really unimpressed with that driving - especially when I've obviously got a toddler on the back of the bike. by contrast the store2door van right at the beginning of the video was noticeably courteous in pulling over and gave me a smile as I went by
I did ask for you to cover a commute for me but I managed to use kommot and the cycle way network to make a cycle friendly route for myself. My route resembled yours for a bit but you really explore some roads I’ve never seen before. What really gets my goat is when the cycle infrastructure only exists in certain places so you are forced to go the long way round just to find it, to keep safe. I still use the elephant and castle roundabout to get to Blackfriars bridge. I did have an incident on the road just after Burgess park when there was a temporary light, I was filtering on the offside and a lime bike rider cut in front of me and stopped in my path and I was thrown off the front of my handlebars. I am amazed he tried to blame me for it and didn’t even take accountability as he obviously didn’t look. I was visible and approaching and he suddenly blocks my path. Some people have no road sense. I would say though at rush hour the cycle path from Southwark station to where the segregated cycle lane ends near the Smithfield market becomes the Wild West. Riders riding aggressively, overtaking dangerously, being inches away from other people’s back wheel and handle bars and doing anything to get in front. To be fair, that is the cycling culture in London. Unfortunately we just have poor infrastructure which makes cyclists more aggressive and more impatient which makes it more dangerous. We need more segregated cycle lanes to alleviate the congestion at rush hour. We also need to fix the timing of the lights which I believe contributes to the bunching up of cyclists which makes that kind of behaviour more prevalent. The issue is that there are no cyclists on the path and then everyone goes at the same time at once packed together. The distribution of the cyclists is uneven. I am surprised to have seen a collision from the way people ride.
yeah that's a good point about the light timing causing bunching. personally I think the cycle path should have zebras over them rather than lights - a lot of the time you're just waiting at an empty path. people say cyclists wouldnt stop at zebras but the people who aren't stopping at zebras aren't stopping at lights either, so...
@ another thing to add that the segregated cycle paths can be very bumpy, I ride a road bike and a fixie which has no suspension which makes it even worse. The shared paths on pavements are much smoother than the cycle paths which makes it more preferable for cyclists to use instead. But what stops them from using the pavement? I just don’t get all the roadworks at the end of the year and still some of these cycle highways are too bumpy for people who ride road/hybrid bikes which is most people. It slows you down and distracts you while your head is bobbing up and down.
@@danieltesfaye8517 it varies a lot I think - I went on a fact-finding/scouting cycle today around London and the new lanes I saw varied from a bit on the bumpy side to gorgeously smooth
@@Londoncycleroutes The London Bridge to Greenwich cycle route is smooth if the cycle path is purpose built and not a part of the road with some paint. I agree it does vary which makes me wonder why that’s the case. It is to slow us a down? Is it the contractor who quoted the least to carry out the work? Those bumpy paths have given me a sore undercarriage. Sorry my French!
Glad you're over the Covid. What with London's traffic, bet I wasn't the only one who was a bit concerned last week. Your comment about the practicality of managing both a small child and bicycle on public transport even somewhere as comparatively well served as London is telling. If a strong advocate for not using cars often finds it impractical, or feeling unsafe, what does that tell us about the likelihood of wider adoption of bikes? If you could say anything to the any of the boroughs' transport committees or TfL about making it easier to leave the car, what might that be?
I think taking him on the back of a bike on a train is tricky but I wouldn't say that's necessarily huge wider barrier to not using a car (I don't have one) in the sense that we use different modes for different journeys... I'd take him on a bike to go to e.g. play football in the next town centre (a local journey 10 min cycle away that's a pain by public transport) but we take him on the bus and train all the time, just not on the bike as well. that said more accessibility on railways would really help not just people with kids but people with difficulty walking etc!
I seriously think 30fps looks way better than buffer-jerky video-buffer-jerky video. I don't care what you say. Gave up at the start of Camberwell Green.
The way from Peckham Rye identical from 3:21 onwards, just joining from the east after going up the Surrey Canal path from Peckham library, I do this often very nice route indeed.
