This whole series is such a metaphor for teen angst and insecurity. And the only escape is acceptance that you can’t change the world and the future is uncertain and you just have to learn to live with that.
I mean kind of but I don't think the series has one perspective and purpose. There's allegories for Christianity, Nihilism and it's optimistic counterpart, the teenage aspect you mentioned, finding meaning in a meaningless world, enlightenment and abstract chaos. There's an even longer list. The series wants the viewer (us) to enjoy the ride, the art, the music and not care about the destination. For me this series feels like an intrusion on some people adrift, it proposfuly always starts episodes halfway thru the conflicts, it shows you a glimpse of this everexpanding universe of chaos, brings all the questions but doesn't stay long enough to answer them, because it follows Nagara, which is a risky move ngl, nothing that Nagara doesn't end up knowing is shown, or at least mostly it didn't, because Nagara isn't using this universe or his powers to get answers or investigate, otherwise the show would follow Rajhdani or the group with the teacher instead, Nagara is just using this place to overcoming his issues and the moment he is confident enough thanks to the blue shirt girl (sorry can't remember the names cus i watched it when it aired) she dies, even tho he has an ability some would love to have cus of the endlessness of it, even tho there are so many misteries to be solved, that isn't his journy, his journy was rather a more personal one of learning to like others and oneself, and him staying there served him no porpose anymore even tho we as watchers might want to know the misteries and know the answers. @@whyitmatters6906 I guess you're right, but I only need for there to be two characteristics to a plot to put it in the magical realism genre. First, the characters being vastly nonchalant about the magical elements and second, the magic not providing a way to resolve the conflict, as is generally the case, but only adding to the giant mess that's already there. Sonny Boy ticked both of these checkboxes, so I decided to call it a work of magical realism.

Just finished this anime last night and this scene was breathtaking. It’s so bittersweet that Nagara and Mizuho move on without each other after returning home but that’s the point. I’m gonna be thinking about this show for a long time
we do have a hint that Nagara has future possibilities with Nozomi, it's up to him... and they are in the world with the future Nozomi saw as bright light. Parting ways at a tree as Nagara and Mizuho did is a metaphor seen in many Japanese stories, they're going separate ways. Wonder if Mizuho would look up Rajdhani in the real world?
@@abhrajitdhar4628 but they might be together as equals in the future, not with him depending on her as he did in other universes. She made him make a promise for the future, to be her friend once again even if she didn't recognize him. I don't think those lines were without purpose.
i love literally everything about this scene. the perspective warping shots, the way the lineart gets jagged when the rope tightens, the juxtaposition between rajdhani's video game-esque outlined objects and the pitch black of space, silhouettes occasionally being occluded & replaced by the kaleidoscope-like background, the HUGE shadows and sharp highlights, the calm dialogue, & of course toe's wonderful soundtrack

You can see Nagara getting tired and out of breath as Mizuho looks with an unsure look and starts falling behind. After the push, Mizuho catches up to him and they both look like they got energized. Since Asakaze was never shown again was this some kind of sacrifice to push them forward and give them energy? I feel really bad for that boy as stubborn and full of himself as he was.

This is the ultimate escapist fantasy, I remember when it started I wanted to join the cast. Being 18 the thought of truly growing up and being forced into a world I'm unfamiliar with is horrifying I'd adore being able to just stop and figure out who I am, even if that takes 5000 years. I think it's special that both Nagara and Mizuho chose to go back though. I wonder if I'd choose to go back too.
I think nagara was in the exact same position as you. it's thanks to drifting that he grew so much, but the only thing remaining from drifting is mizuho - she's the only one who remembers anything. the point of sonny boy, in the end, is to value reality even at your lowest moments, and value that time is finite, because that's what makes life so special: that it will eventually end. if you can find just one person that you can trust and find comfort in then I'm sure you'll be ok. this is honestly advice to myself as well cause i'm in the same position atm, but keep moving forward, because eventually this will probably be a time in your life that you can look back on happily, knowing that you're in a much better position now
This is basically a great lucid dream. It can be infinite, ever lasting and full of everything imagination can give. But at the end it doesn’t do much, stagnation by the infinite.
Last summer a friend of mine recommended this anime to me. He had his own reasons why it was so important to him. It seemed pretty complicated at first, but it sure stands out from many other animes I’ve watched. The whole soundtrack, the characters’ dynamics, the ending just helped me empathize and solidify the connection I had with him. We haven’t talked for a while and I’ve been feeling something’s off for about a month now. I tried to contact him and ask if anything’s happened, I’ve been replied to but with no further explanations. It took me to a point where I stopped writing to him as I felt it was becoming forced. I hope everything turns out to be okay. We shared many of our interests and tastes and I remember listening to サニーボーイ・ラプソディ together. I remember the calm and soothing atmosphere this song would create. I guess it would make sense if everything was meant to end like it did for Nagara and Mizuho.
such a phenomenal yet empty feeling ending. I put this show off for so long and just today watched it all. I didn't understand it all but I think I can appreciate it all. I imagine I will come back to this show to rewatch it many times. I remember the realization that 2000 years had passed I failed to comprehend whatsoever the pasage of time.

Sonny Boy is a bunch of highschool teleported to a different reality. For me, Sonny Boy is about moving on from highschool and becoming an adult. Learning to move on in life. Some humans will survive and some humans will die where against war, attack by animals, or die in a car crash. Some people can turn there life around will some can't. Life is just getting started.
This has to be one of if not the best scene I've ever seen in any anime, its the greatest way to conclude the surrealistic adventure that they went through in the most surreal way possible. Fucking impeccable scene, literally my roman empire
Because life is not a dream... Life is real, and it's mines. Even if I waste it, even if it's boring, or even if I'm alone, it's my life. Sorry, I rewatched this anime a lot, and I stumbled onto this clip, and let the music completely take over lol. This is basically my answer to Mizuho, when she asked Nagara why go back.
Just finished this anime recently and gosh the whirlwind of emotions I got from this scene were insane. It's such a great audio visual experience that it just somehow STUCK with me??? And idk but like I feel like the music and the visuals of this scene emit so much feelings from the characters without them even saying much??? If that makes sense. Maybe it's just me but all these thoughts that these characters might be thinking like, "Will we make it out safely? What awaits us back in reality? We're finally going back home and I'm relieved and excited but I'll also miss everyone and everything we've come across while adrift." come into mind. Idk what I'm saying or if any of it makes sense HAHA but yeah...this scene is something else
I have a theory as to why they have to run. So from what I understood, they need to go faster than the speed of light to escape that world, so they were in a spaceship and then they got out to start running to add to the velocity they had in the spaceship, but my guess is that they couldn't stop running because they are in solid ground and that friction between their feet and the ground would slow them down, so it was very important that not only they kept running but ran fast enough to go beyond light speed.
This scene is definitely one of my favourite scenes of all time in anime. It's melancholic yet hopeful. If people say their niche pick is Serial Experiment Lane, my pick is definitely Sonny Boy. It just have a special place in my heart. ❤️

Being 18 the thought of truly growing up and being forced into a world I'm unfamiliar with is horrifying I'd adore being able to just stop and figure out who I am, even if that takes 5000 years. I think it's special that both Nagara and Mizuho chose to go back though. I wonder if I'd choose to go back too.
hey man, I thought so too, I ran off the forest cause I couldn't take it anymore, but trust me man, life does get better, hang on!
I think nagara was in the exact same position as you. it's thanks to drifting that he grew so much, but the only thing remaining from drifting is mizuho - she's the only one who remembers anything. the point of sonny boy, in the end, is to value reality even at your lowest moments, and value that time is finite, because that's what makes life so special: that it will eventually end. if you can find just one person that you can trust and find comfort in then I'm sure you'll be ok. this is honestly advice to myself as well cause i'm in the same position atm, but keep moving forward, because eventually this will probably be a time in your life that you can look back on happily, knowing that you're in a much better position now
@@fats2010 you're wise bro
This is basically a great lucid dream. It can be infinite, ever lasting and full of everything imagination can give. But at the end it doesn’t do much, stagnation by the infinite.
So beautiful, so simple while being so deep
2 years since this Anime and from time to time I still revisit this scene..
😢
This scene changed my life
この作品アニメで1番好き
人を選ぶとは思うけど、これ以外のアニメを観てもあまり良いと思えないくらい今は余韻が残っている
youtubeで公式が全話上げてくれてたの感謝だな
I'm so glad I finished this show. It's rare when an ending makes you feel a certain way.
This ost has to one of the most legendary osts in existence
Thank you for uploaded this ! this scene was definitely the climax of the whole anime imo.
ngl this is one the best scenes I have ever seen
such a phenomenal yet empty feeling ending. I put this show off for so long and just today watched it all. I didn't understand it all but I think I can appreciate it all. I imagine I will come back to this show to rewatch it many times. I remember the realization that 2000 years had passed I failed to comprehend whatsoever the pasage of time.

This is my favorite anime by far
When it shows them running while holding hands I just instantly burst into tears Idk
I remember watching this years ago and being blown away. Sonny Boy is so confusing but it's such a masterpiece
ほんとに好きすぎる

2021年のアニメで1番好きだったな
I cry like a baby every time 🥲 this scene was so comforting
I didn't understand almost a single thing that was going on screen, but what I have will stick with me for years to come.
I loved the fact that azakaze helped them escape with his power❤.
constantly crying watching this
Bruh he stayed when they left. That's tough
Just finished the series, so glad I gave it a watch
This has to be one of if not the best scene I've ever seen in any anime, its the greatest way to conclude the surrealistic adventure that they went through in the most surreal way possible. Fucking impeccable scene, literally my roman empire
オッドタクシーとsonny boyは傑作
The only thing I regret about watching this is that I can't experience this for the first time now.
Man, i ship nagara and mizuho, but this aint a romantic anime. Aniway was a beautiful experience for me, anime of the year for sure.
This anime made me realize that I've been living my whole life and didn't noticed it
Because life is not a dream...
Idk what I'm saying or if any of it makes sense HAHA but yeah...this scene is something else
rajdhani became a forest 🌴🎋
I'll never forget this scene
Toe has such a unique sound, I immediately knew it was them when it started playing
a genius made this scene
Good stories have happy endings, great stories have bittersweet endings that hit home...
Gotta come back to watch this every once in a while
This is in my opinion one of the most beautiful moments I've seen in anime
この世界観だいすき
this felt way longer than 3 minutes when i first watched it
toe needs to do more ost works, they pared really great with this anime. Love toe and sonny boy.
