Happens so much in anime. You’ll have a side character become hopeful and happy for a moment, like “We’re really winning this MC! We’re going to make I-“ Then the subtitles cuts out. After that IMMEDIATELY, every viewer knows that guy is getting decapitated or something 😂.

Honestly, after watching SO much subs, they actually CAN avoid that "-" sentence spoil. Usually, they will never said the dialog on a "run on sentence" that will end with a "-". Theres always a comma in there somewhere that could totally cut off the sub before that point and place the "-" sentence almost as soon as it happens...
He should do the one where there is a secret murderer but the subtitles show who it is when the murderer is talking for example, “How could you kill Timmy?” Nathan who is secretly the killer : “Because he got in the way.” Like bruh
I love when the subtitle writers replace "..." with "--" so that whenever the dash appears in the subtitles, you never know if the character is just pausing or if they're actually about to get interrupted by something. Respect to those writers.

I love it when the subtitles tell you who's talking so when someone is sneaking around eavesdropping on a conversation and you know exactly who they are even if you're not supposed to when it could easily just not show the names
EXACT reason i watch scary movies with the subtitles on, just before the jumpscare you'll see the (suspenseful music plays) and whenever someone gets interrupted by a surprise attack you'll see their line get cut at the moment it happens in the subtitles, very useful.
Well I mean, what else are they supposed to do? You can't put the full sentence there, because it wouldn't be accurate to what's being said. Those subtitles are intended for people who are deaf or hearing impaired so they can understand what's happening, and putting in the full sentence would just make things look weird. Plus, what if a henchman is being held captive in the story and is about to say the name of their boss, but all they can say is "His/her/their name is..." before falling dead so they can't complete the sentence? You can't complete it in the subs at that point, because that'd be a spoiler the other way around.

Many subtitles spoil comedy moments. Especially word related jokes (pronunciation, accent, etc) and reactions. I recommend people to turn them off so these are not spoiled but no one has listened so far…
Yeah I get that, I mostly watch without subtitles but-every once in a while-words will just sound like a jumbled mess of noises and I can’t comprehend what they just said without turning on subtitles, Then I usually leave the subtitles on at that point just incase it happens again lol

Especially for the vampire diaries it was really hard to hear because they spoke so fast and softly. You needed to hear it clearly. Plus they had so much action scenes u would easily miss what they said.

And there was a scene where it hadn’t shown his face yet it was supposed to be just a mystery scene where you hear a voice in the shadows and the captions had to fucking go “Toby speaking:” I GOT SO MAD THAT IT GAVE IT AWAY it wasn’t supposed to be revealed for another 10 episodes!!!

Back in the day, with fansubbers. The text would only show what the character has actually said. Nowadays, the whole sentence is placed. It's a weird change.
This was funny as hell. I couldn't watch the whole thing at first due to almost dying of laughter. I know exactly what this subtitles thing feels like. It happens a lot in animes or years ago when I used to watch African drama shows. The subtitles do more than just tell you what they're saying. You could even hear someone humming or knocking on a door and the subtitles literally be like [Lisa knocks on the door] before you even see them on screen! 🤣
I remember in COD Black Ops 2 in the first mission (Spoilers for BO2 Campaign), when you see Menendez talking to someone on the radio the subtitles straight up tell you that person is Kravchenko. A character that is believed to be dead from the first game and is revealed later on in the story to be alive. Luckily my first playthrough of the campaign was without subtitles!
My favorite wasn't even a spoiler, but a warning during the intro of digimon trainers live reading where the translators call the episode "far right" Fucking hilarious.
I used to watch horror movies with subtitles on and it would be like (Foot steps in the back walking closer) and I’d be like “what footsteps” and then it’s a jump scare. It ruins it a lot if it’s not done right. Had a few shows where there was a character who we didn’t know the identity of but the subtitles told you who it was before hand which killed all the build up
There are captioners who are cursing you out right now, but you’re dead-ass correct about the ones who f-up the timing and spoil events before they actually happen on screen 😂

This is extremely relatable. I hate it when subtitles ruin an upcoming surprise or what would've been an excellent joke, the worst part is when you turn them off and suddenly can't hear what they're saying (which is why you turned them on in the first place 🤦🏾♂️).
People always ask me, "Why do you have subtitles on when you're watching something in English?" Well, sometimes I can't understand what someone said, or sometimes I have loud things going on at home and I need subtitles to ensure that I'm understanding what they're saying. I'm not perfect, sometimes I mishear what people say, I like the subtitles being there for clarification purposes, even if I might not always need them.
Once I was watching a show (I don't remember what show) and there was a mysterious character you weren't supposed to know the true identify of yet. But when they talked off screen, the subtitles said their actual name instead of "Mysterious stranger" or something.
I listen to the Harry Potter audiobooks sometimes when I’m doing things and later in the books when there’s like a mystery character talking you know who it is because of their voice 💀
I always watch shows without captions first and then if I watch them again I turn them on. Soo much better. This includes films in other languages. Watch them with English dub first to enjoy the style, scenery, animation, and plot twists, then watch them a second time in their original language with captions to enjoy the sound, and dialog
No. Sometimes what you're watching gets quiet or dialogue is hard to comprehend due to accents. You can speak English and have no idea what was just said in real life from simply traveling anywhere in US.

It was hard to force myself to stop using subtitles on comedy and horror, but very worth it. I just enjoy them so much more now

On Netflix there's usually two settings one being more descriptive
