The Apollo Theater is one of Black Music most historic venue to host some of the most talented and respected R&B/Soul/Jazz singers ever to grace the hearts of millions worldwide. Apollo is also known for having the toughest (hard to please) audience, however they were under the spell of these two talented vocalists. This video showcases the debut of both Mariah Carey and Shanice Wilson; performing music from their first released album.

Mariah Carey has perfect control in her voice back then, from low notes, chest notes to whistle notes. Her voice is like an instrument and that makes her a legend. No professional singers said Shanice can compare to Mariah's level, not to mention better. Mariah Carey is the incomparable, the one and only.
Mariah had a great voice, but she lost it. Shanice still has a great voice and even if professional singers never compare them that still doesn't take from Shanice being a phenomenal singer. I think Shanice was more amazing here and not just because she was only 14 years old.

Her voice was good at the beginning of her career/during her first album, but not very strong... You can tell she perfected her voice and sound during the emotions, and music box album. Then her range and tone was undeniable perfection when she put out the Daydream album...and could sing live no problem!!! Butterfly she experimented with r&b...but still had very strong vocals and perfect pitch. Rainbow she had a completely different sound(which I love) ...still had very good range, but used more of a whisper, softer tones. Then on her voice did get a little weaker, but she still has amazing range. She's older of course she's not going to sound as great as she did during her early 20s. I read she was smoking at one point in time..so that definitely had an affect on her voice.but lets not get it twisted. She's still a very talented singer and songwriter... in a league of her own!!

Shanice is only like 14 or 15 singing like that, I'm sure she inspired Mariah to some degree. Shanice was trained by Seth Riggs he trained all the Stars in the 80's like Michael, Janet, Prince and Whitney before all the auto-tunes and studio tricks they all know how to sing and hit amazing notes. Mariah came after all of them so she is not better but she's the best at constantly hitting that whistle note but I feel Shanice's voice is much stronger and soulful than Mariah's. Shanice didn't need any help at all she can floor you acapella with no back up, she just didn't blow up like Mariah but she's every bit just as special as she is. I love them both deeply. Mariah and Shanice both loved Whitney Houston and you can tell they are inspired by her mostly in their vocals. Mariah was lucky enough to duet with her what a blessing. I'm proud to have grown up with all of the best to ever do it. 💯

Yes, you are correct. 'Vision of Love' was Mariah's first song and '(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance' was Shanice's, so I used "debut" to speak to their appearance as I wanted to use their ballads and not their uptempo as both ballads deal with heartbreak.

As I have pointed out: Tommy spent a huge budget to promote Mariah, why would he spend millions if it was left to the voice? He also engaged in Payola where the label would pay a radio station to play their artist music and sometimes to not play another. He also reduced the cost of her singles to attract more sales to push her up to the top of the charts. Another factor in Mariah's favor was the fact that, unlike Shanice, she was not burdened with the task of *crossing over.* Therefore, a white audience who loves black music but prefer it in a white body (Elvis Presley, for example) happily looked to Mariah. And mind you, she was first billed as a white artist singing black music.
If you look at all the top singers, they had a powerful man behind them, even Whitney had Clive Davis. Also, I do not know what you mean by her music choice is very bland. I am certain you do not own one of Shanice's albums.

Mariah may have sold the more records and attained "record-breaking" success (mainly due to the hype machine Tommy Mattola instituted in the very beginning), but Shanice was by far the superior vocalist, hands down. Mariah relied on a lot of theatrics, tricks, and mannerisms to come off as this gigantic "vocal beast" but Shanice had the soul, passion, and natural presence and ability to effortlessly BLOW (without the need of a ton of back-up singers). THAT's pure talent, and not something easily manipulated/bought with millions of dollars.

I am certain there are people who prefer Madonna's voice to Mariah's. So let's look at technicalities: Mariah's voice has a distinct timbre that restricts its flexibility. Shanice's voice is adaptable to most genres. Shanice has a naturally prettier tone. Mariah sings inwardly and breathy to make her tone beautiful but overtime that has now damaged the overall quality of her voice. To say Shanice is nowhere near vocally superior to Mariah is a joke because Mariah does not have a musical history as rich and diverse as Shanice. In fact, I would not even count Mariah as a real singer in the lane of Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Deniece Williams, Chaka Khan...These vocalists had to work their way to the top of their careers. Mariah was the first manufactured singer. She was curated in the studio. Her rise was not based on she going on the road to build a fanbase, it was bought and paid for by Tommy Mottola who spent millions to make sure her singles topped the charts. Her vocal limitations show in how she can only perform in a controlled setting. We all know Mariah quiets down when she is on stage with other singers and that's because she knows she is dependent on a safe space i.e. her own rehearsed music with her own band and backing singers. Great singing is not just about a beautiful voice, it is about being able to preserve your voice. A real singer is able to work in various settings. For example, between November and December, Shanice performed her music at the RnB Unwind concert, a few weeks later, she was performing newly learnt songs in a theater production, and then in December, she was performing with the Gay Men's Chorus LA for their Xmas show. That is an example of a real , talented singer.

shanice without a doubt is pitchy in many of her high notes and her tone does not have the quality that mariah has. truthfully her tone is not of high quality. tone wise she's not on the leval of whitney, ella fitgerald, or mariah. on the other hand mariah has superior tone, better technique, and she hits that high note but pitch is off at the beginning for a split second then she gets right on track and slays. being totally truthful and fair, all in all mariah destroyed shanice.
