- This is rare footage! Cars that were to tall to fit through the old tunnel were ferried across the river, and that is what the 4616 was doing. Taking cars down to the dock, at the beginning of the video. You need to hear this on a good sound system, or at least a good set of headphones, to get the full effect. As with all my vids. the sound is just as important as the picture! Thanks again for watching, commenting, rating, and subscribing! Bob...
Really enjoying these videos, your commentary is fantastic! Very interesting & you win the prize for the world's most soothing voice! 🏆🎙️ Caroline, UK.
Thank you for the kind words, and watching!
Awesome footage! It's pretty hard to find older videos of the area around the tunnel. Some very nice classic power seen as well!
I never made it back to see the new tunnel, but with you tube I don't have to! Lol. Bob...
I can't believe I haven't seen this video yet! Great action there! Glad you caught the action then before it was replaced just a couple years later.
Thank you sir!
This is a great video! Thank you for sharing.

I spent my childhood getting kicked out of there. It was about a 2 years before this video that I made my last trip there. My 2 friends and I were about 12 and we were going to spend the night under the bridge until we saw a man with red glowing eyes. I will NEVER FORGET. We used to jump on and off the trains. We always would run in and out of that tunnel. Wow looking back I'm surprised we weren't killed.
We were a little nervous about getting that close, but we drove from clear across the state to see the tunnel, and film a couple trains. Sounds like you had a scary experience there!
Great video Bob! What an interesting location. I remember seeing photos of this tunnel in the rail mags years ago. Looks like a major yard right up on the hill.
In 1995 they built a larger diameter tunnel to accommodate double stack intermodels and taller cars. Thanks for watching!
Great job with the classic footage from the old tunnel Bob!! Thanks for sharing!!
I never made it back to see the new one! Probably can't get that close any more being a boarder boundry. Thanks for watching and commenting! Bob...
bobozo389 Yeah, things aren't the way they once were that's for sure. Now if you get even remotely to close to anything you'll get a visit from the cops.
Ya gotta be carful! That's for sure. Bob...
Very cool, wish I could have made it up there to see. I remember all the GTW high cube boxcars with the tunnel warning stencil on them.
Thanks, this was just a couple of years before they built the new, taller tunnel to accommodate those cars, and double stack containers, as well.
Really nice video Bob and, I did put a good pair of headphones on. You're right, it is important to get the full experience. Sounds really great when that lashup of Canadian National EMD'S are coming out of that old tunnel!
- Balerio
Thanks Balerio! 2 years later they built a new larger tunnel, so I'm glad we got this shot of the old one. Bob...
Bob is this tunnel still in use?
Yes, the new larger tunnel accommodates taller railcars and double stack intermodals as well. Bob...
The old small tunnel is no longer in use, and has not been since 1994. Bob...
Many years ago the young school kids were taken thtu the old tunnel from the old depot as a field trip. Anyone else remember?
I remember!
Great to see Grand Trunk!
Yes, I very much miss the Grand Trunk! Thanks for commenting!
The 15 or so CN standard cab GP40s were usually used as "tunnel rats". All gone from the roster now since they weren't dash 2s
Yeah, those were the good old days! Thanks for your comment!
Went there about a month ago everything is the same and there was the PH&D historical society right down the tracks from that tunnel
Cool! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I wonder what the condition of the old tunnel is now in 2022.
As of 2015, it was still there, they just removed the track leading up to it on both sides, after they opened the new one.
Be great if someone was allowed to go through it and make a video. I wonder if it is now flooded at the midpoint. @@bobozo389
Emd power bad ass
Bad ass almost describes it, it's just a little more than that!
