I suppose that young people too never think that it could happen to them. I was the same, growing up with an alcoholic mother and grandmother, I thought I would never let that happen to me. I was a hard worker, capable and functional and then it all fell apart. Still worked hard, was capable and functional only now I was working to fund my addiction and capably and functionally hiding it from everyone. Or so I thought. I wouldn’t wish addiction on anyone.

Hopefully the jail kept a close eye on him. And you are so right. Someone with that level of alcohol addiction could easily go into DTs. It's so sad to watch. He said he had 16 years of sobriety and then life threw in a wrench. My late husband and I volunteered with alcoholics and addicts for over 20 years. I feel for the defendant but you could tell this case also had a deep effect on Judge Simpson.

I’ve been that bad with the bottle. Once you’re shaking you’re dying, just not necessarily to death. It is absolute agony. The only thing that helps is more booze. Just not too much. Unfortunately self control is almost nonexistent. I was shaking every morning for 3 years before I could finally stop. And I swear to you with everything in me, I wanted to stop every waking moment of the day. (I’m sober now ❤)

It’s scary how dangerous alcohol is when drinking, but even quitting can be deadly. And yet it’s legal but other less dangerous substances aren’t. Alcohol can permanently alter your life with organ failure and other issues so even if you get sober you’re still affected daily. The impact it has is insane but it’s sold on almost every corner in cities and normalized in society. Wine Mom is trendy and people wear it proudly on tshirts and crap. Like that is insane to me.
I say that as an opiate addict with 15+ years clean. I haven’t touched anything, including alcohol. It’s just as dangerous as illegal substances.

  • @BirthXSleep

As someone who is recently sober, I know what he’s going through. The withdrawals from alcohol is no joke. I tried to quit cold turkey and literally felt as though I was dying. DTs, night terrors, insomnia, pins and needles, and constant itching so I went on another bender that lasted months and knew once I stopped I’d have to deal with it again. Best decision I ever made was getting sober. 169 days and counting

Congrats. I hope to one day be able to say the same. I'm just over 18 years sober and almost 6 years clean from opiates.
I chose to quit drinking the day I learned I was going to be a dad. It was the best decision I ever made other than raising my now 17 year old when his mother wasn't around. It was a struggle but I got lucky as my wife has helped me raise both our boys even tho she isn't my oldest sons biological mother she is her Mon. Without her I couldn't of gotten off opiates and I would've ended up on fentanyl with how difficult it is to get pain pills off the streets even at insane prices the fentanyl is cheap and in abundance and I definitely wouldn't be alive today just like my wife's deceased best friend and her friends mother both passed away from a fentanyl OD. Her youngest daughter who is 13 was the one who found her in the bathroom at 3am. My drinking problem made me a horrible husband to my ex-wife/highschool sweet heart and luckily she married a good man who fathered 3 girls with her. It took me a very long time to realize how much the alcohol and then pills made me into a horrible husband.

You'd be surprised, depending on which jail they just let you DT with nothing. Only recently did Macomb county jail start doing a librium protocol for alcohol and benzo withdrawal, not enough to make you high but just enough that you don't have seizures or cardiac arrest. Before this they were paying a few wrongful death settlements each year from people dying from DTs. But also, in southeast Michigan they have a program called hope not handcuffs. If you have a non violent warrant you can go to any police or sheriff station and say "I want hope not handcuffs" then the police make a call and a HNH angel shows up to take you to treatment. Many facilities will fast track people to get into detox immediately (usually the facility I work at)

Oh God bless you JUDGE SIMPSON! I have never seen such a thing, you helped this man to live, and have hope. Many years ago my identical twin sister died of alcoholism while living with our mother. She flew to visit us (my husband and I), and told me what was happening. I sent her home the next day, as I had no way to take care of her, in her situation. It was not a year before she collapsed and died. I regret that I did not find a way for her to live and recover. Now I see how hard you worked to give this man a chance at his life, and I am so glad you did.
I will suffer the loss of my twin for as long as I live. I do not know why she became an alcoholic, and I cannot abide even a sip of it (alcohol, nor do I use drugs unless I must use a prescription for medicine from my doctors). I have a younger sister, and an older sister, neither are alcoholics or drug users. Thank you for reaching out to this man, and giving him a way to live, and get better, and not die.

I'm praying for this man, and all my brothers and sisters who live with addiction.
Having watched Judge Simpson for some time now, I knew I liked him. The way he empathized with this man was really touching.
I feel for this man. I bet he told people over and over again in meetings during his 16 years of sobriety that we don't look down on people who have written another chapter in their story of addiction. That the doors would always be open and that we would not judge them. All of that goes right out the window when we are the ones who fell off of the wagon. We are understanding of others, but we beat ourselves up so hard, and we are beyond embarrassed. How easy we accept others picking up another white chip, but we fear that we will be ostracized. Funny how that works.
I wish I could be there or at least let him know that if he wants sobriety, we are hear to listen and go on that journey together.

In the throes of full blown alcohol addiction, one needs to drink just to appear normal (shaking hands, agitation, etc. Notice he's not slurring in the 1st appearance, and he's at a .10). He needs a full medical assessment in addition to a substance assessment, and then, as an inpatient, both real-time medical monitoring/therapy (big meds), and individual and group therapy. I'd bet he'd be surprised at what alcohol has done to his body already, low calorie white claw or not. Thank god it's not straight whiskey or vodka that he's pounding down, but addiction is addiction.
Lost his job, his marriage, his kids ... Welcome to rock bottom. But Judge Simpson is so compassionate, so experienced with people like this, that I can't help but pull for Mr. Keenan. He's at a pivot point; make it or break it time. I hope his love for his kids is stronger than his need for booze. I think, to varying degrees, we've all had to make choices like this at some point in our lives.

With that being said, finding help in Oregon was difficult.Medicare requires a hospital setting and only one hospital in the state, 3 years ago, would take me. By the time I found a hospital 4 + hours away, I depleted most my magnesium and b's. And no ability to stay upright. Addiction and mental health are a low bar in this country and the bars getting lowe but fluffed with non-profit addiction programs. Overwhelmed counselors, too high of a caseload, and too easy or boring to certify! Profit over quality, a trumpism rot for life. I'm not so cavalier to say they didn't help, they did! Long story, but I left, felt I could do as well on my own. Live in Coquille, Or., hospital gave me a bus ticket as far as Roseberg, arriving at midnight, checked into a motel and continued DT's for 2 days. I survive weeks on my own. Thanks Judge S.

I am really angry reading this because someone failed you miserably. None of this makes any sense. There are many places here in Portland where I live that offer detox and rehab. I know, I’m a 16 year clean heroin junkie. Been through the rehab system plenty of times and also have family working in recovery. Hooper and Providence to name two do medical alcohol detox-and Hooper specifically. I’m also on Medicare and what Medicare doesn’t cover Oregon Health Plan does- fully covers treatment. It took me four tries of intense INPATIENT rehab- I was in a 2 year inpatient rehab and it was fully covered. It took that for me to recover. And my methadone was covered too. Now I’m completely clean. But to hear you had such problems here in Oregon pains me. I hope you are doing well now.

At first I was just drinking, and I can relate to the part where he talks about waking up in the middle of the night and having to drink to steady himself.
I tried AA and outpatient, and didn’t do very well because I kept relapsing. Eventually though I was ready and just quit everything on my own. Either way, that’s the one thing that you really NEED in order to get/stay sober: a genuine personal willingness to actually do it.

I was still drinking after my second jail term. I came home one night, and my five year old son came up to me and asked if I had brought the ice cream. I told him, ''Get away from me, you little s.o.b.'' I went in to the bathroom, looked in the mirror and said, ''Hi, mom.'' The decision by the judge to keep the defendant in jail was the most sensible and fair one, however it must have been very difficult for the judge to make. It clearly shows how hard it is to be in the judges chair. This level of wisdom does not grow on trees but is rather the result of a long life of decency and humanity.
