I think there needs to be another category for a movie like this, because I don’t think it’s fair to call it “shit” because it’s too competent and genuinely entertaining in a lot of parts. Maybe “So Close to Good” or “Almost There” or something.
Based on the style of the channel, a "Meh." rating would be great.

The old guy at the gas station is Richard Farnsworth. He was also the sheriff in Misery. Also Charon was played by Kevin Peter Hall aka the Predator and Harry from Harry and the Hendersons.
Patrick Bergin, who plays Beezle, was also a well known actor of that time and was in some big movies like Sleeping with the Enemy and Patriot Games.

Richard Farnsworth is awesome, I was just re-watching that super lame yet awesome remake of "The Getaway" with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger (as well as Michael Madsen and James Woods) and I had forgot he shows up at the end of that movie.
He was also one of the managers in The Natural. And if you don't blink you can recognize him as one of the Comancheros in The Outlaw Josey Wales.

This movie absolutely RULES!!! This was one of those movies where you wake up at like1:30am after falling asleep with HBO on and open one eye and this masterpieces is playing... this movie is right up there with Tank Girl and Boogie, the animated one...

C'mon Jason, Thank Girl is amazing, and sits on that line right in the middle between been a great movie and SBIG seal of approval

The old gas station man from this is fantastic as the lead in David Lynch's "The Straight Story". Also, the waitress in the scene with Jerry Stiller is his wife Anne Meara. And the hitchhiker is Lita Ford!

One of the best horror comedies of the 90's it feels both unintentionally and intentionally funny
I don't know about one of the best, but it was interesting.
This film is a cult classic and very entertaining. Like Split Second it comes sooo close to working. The Jerry Lewis you're thinking of is Jerry Lee Lewis the singer. The Jerry Lewis mentioned in the movie is one worked with Dean Martin and had telethon for years. He's in The King of Comedy with De Niro
Gilbert Gottfried as Hitler kinda got me.
This movie did not get a theatrical release, but went direct to video. At least in the U.S. Keep in mind this was the time when a lot of movies that would have gone into drive-ins ended up as DTV, and seeing a movie like this - good acting, decent production values, fun story - was completely blowing away any expectations one had after the umpteenth Full Moon release. I still love it to this day. It's just sad that it's remained such an obscure title. It always comes up in my list of favorite b-movies.
I love this flick. I saw this on Showtime in the 90s so I think it was a straight to cable release. BTW, I believe your talking about Jerry Lee Lewis that married his under age cousin not Jerry Lewis. 😂

Not bad, just good. A fun, creative and competently made movie with lots of great cameos, it's everything a "B movie" could aspire to be.

Little side note - the guy who plays the hell cop is C.J.Graham. He played Jason Vorheese in Friday 13th, part 6.

I saw this movie when it first came out…. What made it so good was the cameos, you have the dude that played Jason Voorhees, Predator and Lita Ford… The main dude in hell was also Famous for stalking Julia Roberts in sleeping with the enemy…
Patrick Bergen, he also played Robin Hood with Uma Thurman as maid Marion in a film that came out the same year as Prince of Thieves (Bergen's film being the better of the two).

Love your review of this nearly good ,nearly bad but not so bad its good movie . Interesting fact it was written by Brian Helgelend the guy who did La Confidential and other genuinely good movies . I think you guys are spot on this movie has a ton of good and creative elements but it doesnt really blend it all well.
The leads were poorly cast.
Chad Lowe was always the same, and Kristy Swanson never had a good role, while she was young. She was playing a 16 year old, the same year.

And she was like 19 when the movie was actually shot (1989) released 1991 because of delays so I fall to see the issue with her being a young virgin

Its been pointed out that the gas station owner is Richard Farnsworth. He is a Oscar nominated actor for The Grey Fox and has been in numerous westerns throughout his career including some with Clint Eastwood. Richard was my neighbor for a number of years and he was the real deal cowboy. He started in films as a stuntman working with and for Yakama Kanutt, who did most of John Waynes stunts.
Also, he's Professor Farnsworth from Futurama's great great great great great Grandfather. 🚀
C.J. Graham who played Jason from F13th Pt 6 played the demon cop. Great movie with fantastic imagery. You watch this once and you never forget it.

I remember watching this on local TV when I was a kid. They played it once and then never again. No other TV channel in my country played it either.

This movie cost 9 million dollars to make and had a worldwide gross of $26,000. That is a seemingly impossible failure to achieve, but it explains why nobody has ever heard of this movie.
I though that cop for a second was Maniac Cop. There is no way anybody thought otherwise!
I totally forgot this movie but suddenly have fond memories of it. Namely frying eggs on the sidewalk outside the diner.

this one had major distribution problems and thats likely why it fell thru the cracks. Though i remember it be on all the time on cinemax in the 90's so i watched it a LOT growing up. You guys seem to get it pretty well. It really is one of those weird end of decade start of decade kinds of films that feels weird and doesnt easily fit either decade. it was completed in 1989 but released in 1992 and it feels a bit lost in time as well. So yes this PRE-dates Buffy lol

Man, I used to watch this goofy flick all the time as a kid. As stupid as it is, I would never turn the channel. It's definitely a movie that makes you go WTF, but it is still entertaining because you just want to see what's going to happen next!
If you're ever in a diner and they have the donuts in a plexiglass case chained shut...just back away slowly. 😂
