Why a Daredevil Game Would be Easy to Make

  • Daredevil is a character who has appeared in many different games that include Marvel characters but he's never gotten his own full fledged triple A game. The closest he got was a small game on the Game Boy Advance that drew heavily on the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie, but this game was hardly a full Daredevil game that really reached the heights of what Matt Murdock is capable of. #Marvel #Daredevil #MarvelVideoGame

Just imagine the creative liberties in rendering a world through “Matt’s Eyes”, the liberal use of colors, the effects, using sounds as sources of “light”. Imagine looking at a city with a complete dark sky, lighted by street noise and perpetually covered in fog at the distance. Remembering that at the end of the day it is Matt’s imagination that renders it, in a way it could be thought of more as in a Dream sequence. It could really make for a memorable game for its unique visual style. Otherwise, in the event of a need for normalcy you could just render realistically while on cutscenes.
You could use part of Insomniac’s Hell’s Kitchen, scaling it to a more modest movement speed of Daredevil, maybe getting some inspiration by Assassins Creed traversal.
Story-wise you could do as in the series, an event occurs, maybe in Spider-Man 2, or just the day of the outbreak/Prison Lockout which sends that corner of New York into disarray, throwing Matt into the forefront. Besides you could use more of the Lawyer part, building a case with “Nelson and Murdock”, collecting evidence, getting/protecting witnesses, going through speech trees at court, using the enhanced sense to interrogate...
Maybe you could spice up the combat as to not make it an Arkham clone. Maybe instead of a flashing button prompt you just see a “ghost” of an enemy’s further animation and you just have to get out of the way. Maybe the attacks are a bit more free flowing so you have to make sacrifices: Use fists to be faster staggering enemies, use both batons to sacrifice speed for greater damage and combine both into a staff for greater reach sacrificing both speed and damage in order to fight crowds. It could be like playing a game while seeing the hit-boxes in real time to avoid damage and dealing it.

I think an interesting mechanic for daredevils "sight" should be shown through different filters similar to snake's NVG or eyepatch in the metal gear series where you can flip through night vision, thermals, etc., considering daredevil would be using different senses for different clues and details depending on the situations. One where hes detecting sounds, heat, smells, heartbeats or maybe even a generic filter where they're all highlighted onto each other

When you think about it, having a radar sense would kind of be implemented automatically. Sure you could, and imo should, have a detective mode type of thing, but even just playing the game in a third-person view already gives you a similar advantage to seeing everywhere around you like Daredevil.
Games usually don't address this, but having a third-person camera gives you a huge advantage that your character usually shouldn't have. You can use it to see when an enemy is approaching from behind your character, you can look around corners without getting out of cover, and sometimes even look through walls. Most video game characters aren't really able to do all that, but Daredevil can, even in canon.

Would LOVE a Daredevil game. Just started to watch the Netflix series and I fricking love it, a game based around him could work so well I think. I think a game like Spider-Man would be great, set in Hell’s Kitchen and going up again the Hand and Kingpin (perhaps even with the Defenders at some point) and stuff and maybe having some attorney/detective-style gameplay like in LA Noire or Phoenix Wright at certain points. And yeah I agree a prologue with battlin’ jack and him being blinded and him training with Sticks or something would be great. This game would have so much potential and I would love it to take place in some kind of Marvel Gaming Universe.
And yeah, I think a third-person perspective where we see everything would be good but with like a sonar detective mode. Also getting the actors from the TV show should totally voice act the characters, ESPECIALLY Foggy and Matt. Their voices are great.

I recommend reading "The Devil is in the Details: Examining Matt Murdock and Daredevil." Page 150, which is in the middle of a chapter that talks about the contrast of Spider-Man and Daredevil as characters despite of their overlap. It essentially boils down to this: Matt Murdock is ALWAYS Daredevil psychologically; Spider-Man isn't. And that plays out very much in the game side of things in Spider-Man PS4: Peter Parker's sections do not at all function like Spider-Man portions where you need to rely much more on just being a normal guy than a Spider Guy to get out of situations. If you were to approach Daredevil's courtroom dramas, you would absolutely NEED to look at it from an LA Noire standpoint where the courtroom drama is meant to be the framework for going out as Daredevil and saving your clients from certain death. If you fail in the courtroom, then it makes getting to Kingpin THAT much harder because certain clients may hold connections that are required to advance or draw out supervillains. It would also add mechanics from other games where success or failure (Because Daredevil is defined by failure as much as success,) can determine both play difficulty AND the overall outcome of the game.
    10:20
Daredevil as a character might exist in the Marvel Universe, but he has always operated just on the fringes of it. Again, to paraphrase Devil is in the Details, Daredevil's stories work best when it's NOT dealing with the greater Marvel Universe out there but kept very much to the streets of Hell's Kitchen. He's a realistic character in a world where realism is shotgunned to the wind. That isn't to say he can't OPERATE in greater Marvel Universe stories, but every time they expand him into that world he always feels slightly off from them. As if he doesn't belong there. Because HIS world is so small, so personal, and so REAL that you add aliens, Hulks, demons, AI superrobots, and it becomes absurd (see Ann Nocenti's run on the character.) And while Game COMPANIES might see crossover potential as viable, game DEVELOPERS would likely just ask:
"Why are we doing all these resources and assets when we can just do that in a Spider-Man game?"
I'm a Daredevil fanboy above nearly all other things, but you want to talk realism: Developers would rather make 10 Spider-Man games than 1 Daredevil game. Because Spider-Man lends himself better to that "crossover" potential. Daredevil stalks the fringes of Spider-Man's world and is very narrow in scope in a crime fiction setting with pseudo (but not OVERT) mysticism when you bring in the Hand and Elektra.

      @AmariMarvelous Год назад

You made some great valid points that I can't disagree with pertaining to Dare Devil and his character and world.
I believe if there was to be a DD game, it shouldn't be open world but more open environments/open hub where they can put more attention and details mainly in Hell's Kitchen and certain areas in NYC and focus on more interior designs inside buildings where DD can enter most places and hideouts in a similar vein as Batman Arkham Asylum and fight on rooftops, alleyways.
With Matt Murdock being a lawyer, devs can focus on that aspect of him taking on court cases and that being a integral part in his storyline. Devs can take cues from Phoenix Wright or even the Netflix show and really go all out with it. I think the game should be rated M to fully explore the violence and crimes that DD goes up against or the very least push The T rating hard.
Although Batman and Spider-Man are two of my favorite superhero characters,I've always been intrigued by Dare Devil because he's like a blend of those two and his character is unique to me. The Netflix show really embodies his character and whoever works on a DD game should take cues from it as a sort of a template but inject their own originality into it.

@AmariMarvelous Arkham City is a better choice because it is still contained compared to other open worlds and that is what Hell's Kitchen should feel like: contained, borderline claustrophobic, and always slightly this side of shady. You can use the backdrop of the greater Marvel Universe (aliens attack) as the explanation why this version of the Kitchen is still so seedy, but yes you seem to be more on the same page with me rather than against me LOL

I would LOVE to play a Daredevil videogame with Batman: Arkham-ish elements to it! I think they should shamelessly take the Detective-Mode feature of Batman: Arkham and translate it into Radar-Sense and DD's other SuperSenses. It would basically be Detective-Mode, but Red instead of Blue, and it would look and feel like a combination of Radar, Sonar, and Infrared-Vision, except it's not technically vision, but it is for the benefit of the gamers. And when he's studying a crime scene or tracking someone down, he'd be using his sense of smell, and he can also feel vibrations and electrical currents and stuff when he touches a wall and all that. It could, and probably should take place in the Insomniac Spideyverse, have a cold-open similar to The Batman Movie by Matt Reeves, and it would take place in a similar period of DD's career.
And no, I don't care if the trolls say that they're just ripping off Batman, because quality Batman content translates very well into quality Daredevil content, so who cares where they got the idea from? By that logic, you could say Batman is just a ripoff of Sherlock Holmes and Zorro, y'know?
As for the plot, I'd have to think about it, but I'd love to see them adapt certain parts of Frank Millar's run, as well as a Spider-Man Team-Up!

A mechanic that could work into that is maybe you could have a sort of fear system like arkham, and when they are scared their hearts are beating faster hence you can always see/hear them. While I’d be totally fine with it if they did, they don’t even need anything as in-depth as LA Noire style missions (although I really do think they’d be a superb way to really set this game apart) per se, but you could have sections where you find your Daredevil targets _as_ Matt Murdock. I can also see weapon combat becoming something that sets the game apart action-wise. His billy club is so versatile that he could have a number of different fighting styles that could be cycled through as well. Like you said, it would print money. Daredevil and The Punisher need their own games, plain and simple. To miss the opportunities these characters provide would be genuinely stupid of Marvel.

6:20 First-person POV. Also, his power is called Radar sense, and a fun fact Stan Lee has said that Daredevil's radar sense is faster than Spider-Man's Spidey-sense.
Also, I do think it is important for them to show both the lawyer-by-day and vigilante-by-night part of the character and there are many ways you could do this. An idea (that they don't have to do but is something to consider) is that they could have it so that a case he takes leads him on the path of discovering a criminal conspiracy and/or defeating the main enemy of the game. You could show cutscenes of his time as a lawyer or get to interact with the courtroom side of things by choosing what Matt Murdock says in court. I also find the idea of having Wilson Fisk in it interesting, one idea is to make it a prequel to the Spider-Man PS4 game so Daredevil is trying to take down the Kingpin, but then you can't have Daredevil actually take down the Kingpin because he gets taken down at the beginning of that game. Another idea is to do the same things a series of side quests in the Miles Morales game showed and what Daredevil season 3 kind of did (because in that he was under house arrest and not in jail) where Kingpin is still influencing the events of what is going on outside even though he is in prison, or still have him as a looming threat and established his importance even though he may not be that influential in the game's story is another thing you can do, and finally maybe you can make it about the power vacuum that gets created now that Fisk is in prison and build of off how Spider-Man PS4 showed that.

If you study a target in First Person Mode, you get a buff to your damage because you're now targeting known weak points.

I came back to this video because I was thinking about it last night, It could be like an Arkham/Assassin's Creed with AC's parkour and "eagle vision" but in a grey and white vision. Once you activate this "eagle vision" type mode everything would get a sonar kind of vibrational movement around it and you could focus your curser (a little circle in the middle of the screen) on a crime or a waypoint, it would then mark it and show you how far away it is and you could hear the audio from what's going on depending on what you chose to focus on and mark. You could have safehouses like the courthouse for Lawyer side quests, Matt's apartment so you could say change your suit, check your progress, upgrade your skill tree and etc. I don't particularly know what company would be best to make this game but if it was an Rocksteady or Insomniac game I know it would be an amazing game to play.

Then in his later life he gets his life ruined by Fisk. But above all of it, I love how he's able to carry on. I know Spidey does that aswell, but I relate to Matt Murdock more. I really like that he's catholic. I'm an atheist myself, but I love how him being a catholic contrasts with him litterally being known as the Devil of hell's kitchen. I think he has some great villains in Bullseye, Fisk and sometimes Punisher and Elektra. My love originally came from the Netflix show but other comics like Man Without Fear, Daredevil: Yellow and Born Again just made me love him more. +he's just a cool character in the larger Marvel universe to me the same way Batman is to DC. @@TommFoolery Well I have had really weird but mixed feelings for Daredevil over the years. I love his character but even though he gets back up, I hate how his life is always ruined by Fisk and Fisk keeps prospering and getting away with his actions. He literally proves Punisher's point because Punisher wouldve ended Fisk in an instant and it would be for the better of everyone. And I find it idealistic that Daredevil gets back up. Its inspiring sure, but its not that easy to get back up and we don't have any characters like that. I also think Daredevil comics tend to get really repetitive (outside of Mark Waid's run) because its constantly Kingpin ruining his life, and Bullseye being there to assist. Sure Fisk is his best villlain and sells the best, but if Daredevil can't find any other villians to challenge him (without Fisk's involvement or assistance), then Daredevil has a pretty crappy rogues gallery then and I see no reason to read every single run following Zdarsky's if they can't do anything original. Im surprised you don't have a problem with Daredevil being catholic while you are being atheist. As a religious person, I found it cheap how Daredevil had faith again at the end because I found he could never truly argue against what he said in the first few episodes when he was talking to his mother. And I mean MSM and Entertainment seem to have a certain bias towards Atheism. University of British Columbia did a research study which concluded that Atheists are distrusted as much as criminals and offenders. Atheists are oppressed and ignored and nobody seems to acknowledge that. even politics seem to have a bias against. What do you think of that? I get that it is cool how DD's beliefs contrast him being the devil but how else are you still deeply intrigued with characters whose beliefs go against your own. I also did not like his attitude in season 3 because of how he treated Melvin Potter (Gladiator), I get why he was pissed and the situation he was in, but if he was in Melvin's position, he could have done the same thing as well. He even ignored what Melvin's girlfriend said about him even though it was true. If Melvin became Gladiator in season 4, I would maybe forgive that. And I read Punisher Welcome Back Frank by Garth Ennis, and I think that comic ruined Daredevil because Punisher had him beat and made his life a lie. And this also seemed to be evident in Daredevil End of Days. I am curious what you have to say about all of this. I would want to love Daredevil again.

    • @TommFoolery
      @TommFoolery 4 года назад

@@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 Hm, I dissagree with a lot of that but agree with a lot of it. I think it's more a case that his rouges are limited than bad. A good example you might want to check out is Daredevil Yellow. That has a good variety of characters. But I do agree that Kingpin gets overused. I don't read runs personally, on particular stories like born again, man without fear, guardian devil, those kinds of thing so while I lile the character, I can admit my knowledge is limited to select stories and the show (and the film, but let's just ignore that).
On the point that he could kill Kingpin and everyone would be better off like Punisher would, I think that's (to put it bluntly) a kinda dumb argument. Not because it logically isn't true, but 1) what kinda story would it be if he just killed Fisk? And 2) you can say this about nearly every hero and his nemesis. Batman could kill Joker. Spidey could kill Green Goblin, Superman could kill pretty much anyone. Would it be much easier to kill their enemies? God yes. But they don't make the easy choice. That's a part of what makes them heroes.
Also, when talking about Daredevil getting back up, you say "it's not that easy to get back up". That's the whole point. It isn't easy to get back up. But that's precisely why it's inspirational. At the end of the day, he's a hero. Punisher kills because he cracked under the pressure of a terrible life. Same with other ANTI-heroes such as Deadpool or Red Hood. But also the same applies to villains like Joker or Two-Face. The fact that these people cracked under pressure is what separates hero from anti-hero/villain. Or in this case, Daredevil from Punisher/Joker. I get that you may not like that, however you can't hold that against Daredevil alone, because the argument that you shouldn't be able to get back up can be applied to almost every other hero. Batman loosing Robins, Superman loosing his father and most obviously, Spider-man loosing absolutely anything. You name it, he's probably lost it. His aunt? Tick. His powers? Tick. His girlfriend? Tick, tick, tick. But they all get back up. So why is it specifically bad that Daredevil gets up too?
I can't particularly argue against him getting repetitive because as I've already said, I haven't consumed as much Daredevil media as you have, but I can definitely see how it could get repetitive.
With Daredevil being Catholic, I don't get why I'd have a problem with it. Personally, I've experienced any bais against me for being atheist. And with the character I believe that him having a religion makes his motivation unique compared to other heroes.
With Melvin, I haven't seen season 3 in a while, but doesn't Melvin lock Matt up, and then when he breaks free, Matt defends himself from Melvin and leaves him to be arrested? If so, I think that's pretty fair, even if Melvin was forced, seeing as Daredevil couldn't of helped him if he tried. Correct me if I'm remembering wrong.
Also haven't read and I know nothing about End Of Days. Just that it's pretty good so I'll have to check it out

A way I think they can do the perspective of the game to be like you are Daredevil is to have every point that you control Matt and other points where he is the central focus the game's display is rendered the way he see's the world while scenes with other characters and more generalized scenes are rendered "normally". Basically, Imagine this. The game opens up with the Kingpin talking to somebody in a visitation room in jail, everything looks like it does to someone who can see normally. The room is mostly grey and Fisk is in his orange prison jumpsuit. At this point it transitions to Matt and Foggy talking about some case when bam, Bullseye attacks. It shows him cause a bit of havoc and mayhem. It cuts to Matt and we're seeing things from his perspective and everything's all Daredevil-y. He tells Fogy to go get help then makes his way to a closet or empty room or something. It cuts back to Bullseye with everything looking normal and he does more classic villain stuff then Daredevil shows up, gives some vigilante hero lines then the perspective shifts from a type of "Third Person Omnicient" (Cinematic) to "Third Person Limited" (You are controlling Daredevil like you are Batman) and the screen fades from full rendering to how Matt sees the world. That way you get to see the Kitchen in all of it's "glory", as well as having Daredevil never "see" normally. You can have the "Daredevil Vision" on constantly but you aren't always in control or even in his perspective all the time so you don't need to have the effect constantly displayed.

I'd personally love to see a Black Panther videogame. Think about it, getting to explore a huge sprawling open world Wakanda, exploring the vibramium mine, the savanna, abandoned jungle temples. Getting to fight Man ape, Klaw, Killmonger and to add some more boss fights (Black Panther doesn't really have that many villains), Tigra, Kraven, Shanna and Namor.

you probably wont see this but if you do give it a thought, we know a daredevil game wont happen but if it were to happen and it did take place in the sony marvels spider-man universe from the ps4 title I believe it should be rated M for sure, I think the player should see actual things not like daredevils pov but say there is a stealth section or you want to see someones heartbeat in say maybe a lawyer or interrogation scene you could use "Fear Vision" or something. Basically its essentially just Detective vision but a bit different you can see their heartbeat but it doesnt give you a full heads up display just you hear the heartbeat and you see instead of a skeleton a outline of their body, ex say you're in a section where there is a room full of guys with guns you would cut the lights and turn on said "Fear Vision" and you could then essentially kick ass in the darkness but you can see because you see in basically sonar, here is another example say you are interrogating a criminal and you listen for his heartbeat and as a L.A Noire style type where you predict their answer based off their heartbeat say its calm and steady he's telling the truth but if its fast and erratic you can see he is obviously lying giving you information to make the mission easier

I would make the controls for combat similar to Nightwing from the Arkham games. I think for the open-world, the color grading would be cool if it was all black, gray, and white monochromatic and certain aspects pop in color when they are important or relevant to stand out like Schindler’s List. Make his abilities relevant to gameplay and stealth like the hearing being similar to the Last of Us. I would make a grounded super street-level story that is grimy.

Naughty Dog I think would be a good studio to tackle Daredevil not really Insomniac because Insomniac are at their best when putting darker elements in more light hearted stories to give the plot some stakes but ultimately being very light hearted such as Ratchet and Clank or Spider-Man not writing darker settings with some light hearted tones Naughty Dog are clearly better at that then Insomniac are.

I feel like a good mechanic would be to show us from third person, but you'd be able to toggle which senses to use. like for story telling purposes, they could make it so the average person can not experience something daredevil can. For example, lets just say there's an invisible gas that's killing people, you wouldn't be able to see this gas until you activate your other senses. you'd have to use super smell/taste to be able to detect where this gas is so you can avoid it. Then if you were going into a fight, you could activate hearing which would display a minimap on the top left of the screen displaying all enemy locations as well as showing whether someone is aiming a gun at you, you could activate touch so you can counterattack anybody nearby(this is because he can feel the vibrations in the ground and can predict what his enemies will do), you could activate taste to lock in on a certain entity (for example, an enemy escapes, but you hit him with a baton earlier. you could go to his blood and taste it so daredevil memorizes the scent and everything, therefore allowing him to track this person down no matter where they go). then you could also do mashups with senses like activating hearing and touch at the same time to determine the electricity is moving to and from in a building. this would allow you to shut the power so your enemies are blind. These are all just basic ideas but I do feel like they would work.

I can picture the gameplay being like Perception, where you play as a blind woman who uses sounds to navigate the environment, but like you said it would just be permanent detective mode but make the enemies radiate sound like how they breathe and how they move their feet, like imagine a fight scene being like the one from season 2 finale with Daredevil fighting the hand and he’s just focusing on their breathing to know where they are, but that sort of mechanic would work if Matt was using it in a stealth situation to find where are all the bad guys are in a room

I think they should do segments that are pitch black so normally the player couldn't see then activating daredevils radar sense. Some enemies could dull there heartbeat like in the tv show so there invisible except when they breath making the player focus on where they are and how many are around him

I would love a game of this character but...
*It needs an studio that understands, knows, and loves the character.*
*ROCKSTEADY knows BATMAN at the perfection.*
*INSONIAC GAMES knows SPIDER-MAN at the perfection.*

I think you could have a trade-off where you can turn on the whole detective mode thing where you have increased damage and awareness of everything, but you can see normally as well, with certain drawbacks.

i think the world on fire aspect would be dope depending on the difficulty. like that could be the "extreme" difficulty version of the game. and the sonar vision could be like batmans detective mode. love your vids btw!

Maybe something really cool is there's a case that one of the main character's are blamed for some crime they didn't do and you the player plays Matt Murdock as a lawyer and choose what to say and what evidence to use and there is the outcome of winning the case or lossing it and how that will change the story. This can be a cool little part of the game to explore the Lawyer side and crime fighting side

I would make a game where kingpin is part of a murder and you spend daytime doing court stuff and then at night you do all kinds of cool daredevil stuff where you investigate and interrogate thugs and criminals to find the info on how kingpin is involved in the murders then you fight him and bring him in with the evidence youve been collecting and the vision for the game will be like when he is hearing something it would be a reddish screen until you hear a noise when it would show something as a vague kinda silloute shows on the screen and thats how it would be seen

What I kinda like in the new AC games is that you get to investigate each one of the Templars in the order. Maybe for the legal cases you sometimes have to go undercover at night as Daredevil so that you get some info and figure out the truth behind someone lying in court and stuff.. these two aspects of his personality should be ideally intertwined and influence each other.
Also, like I say in many comments under your videos, I think this game really could benefit from the "templar order" system where instead you´d just have Fisk and a whole bunch of gangsters or actual villains in the ranks as you figure them out one by one, trying to get to the head of the beast..

    I'd play a Daredevil game...although I don't know much about the character-
I'd play it just to see what they would do...although I'd wait for at least the first wave of people played it to sort of see and get a feel for the game-

Mirrors Edge First Person Parkour Fighter Perspective with Vision that uses a combination of Daredevil’s other senses to see different things in different ways. Sound=Echolocation for environment and close to mid-range combat visuals, Smell&Taste=Chemical Vision for trailing enemies and seeing possible gas attacks and traps as well as character/suspect analysis, and Touch=Pressure Vision for direct contact with character and environment.
Then 3rd person Cutscenes and Court Case Segments in full colour and detail (apart from when you need to investigate someone during a Court Case Segment or a Cutscene).
    DONE!

The sonar vision should be something that you can toggle on and off. Prototype had similar mechanic. You can have levels where you need to track someone via there sweat or trail of blood, then you switch the view. assassins Creed had a cool eaves dropping function where you over heard conversations for missions. That would work perfectly for Daredevil.

  • @Dom_510

For the vision, it’s very simple. You just do it like the Arkham games. It’s normal and then you can toggle for a “detective” mode but instead it’s his sonar vision that highlights armed enemies etc.

There should be sections of the game set in a first person pov. Show how he sees the world in certain areas or at will. Allow us to see vibrations on the floor and other neat stuff that his senses can do

I feel like all mortal "superheroes" should have a video game, but I feel like a lot of characters that would fit that category, people simply are not interested in or don't want to take the risk. Plus with too many superhero games that are mortal oversaturation could be a problem as a lot of characters would be similar with a few differences. Maybe a few different villains too. But overall there needs to be quite a few differences. That said, Daredevil could be an exception because of his "sonar vision". Whether that would be entertaining though is debatable.

That said I still hope that one of these becomes a video game.
