  • MotoMan drives the most expensive ‪@kia‬ ever: The all-new Kia EV9 GT Line. He learns that it is stellar, kind of like the last ‘most expensive Kia’ was, the Kia Stinger GT, but unlike that one where he got the prediction of how the market will react to that Kia wrong, he may have a very different view of the near future of what the 2024 Kia EV9 really is . . . a luxury car.

I'd rather get bench seating than power seats on the 2nd row. There should always be an option for 7 or 8 seats on upper trims for SUVs. $80K is way too expensive for just 6 seats.

In the UK around 60% of new vehicles are fleet/lease. Companies can get a huge tax write off for buying electric vehicles ergo the manufacturers make expensive EVs because they make more profit and the buyers get a tax write off.

The biggest threat for the EV9 sits alongside it in the same dealership room, the Telluride. You'd really really, like really want an EV to choose it over the T.

There's only a large gap between the top Telluride and the top EV9 because the American market pretty much abandoned the 50-70k large sedan market, which is how the much the K900 went for. They also have the Mohave (Borrego) in that price range, which also isn't sold here.
That said, Kia seems pleased with early sales, so we'll see. They beat Volvo to market and Hyundai will be debuting the Ioniq 7 this year too, so this space will get crowded quickly

When Kia removed the LIDAR, the MSRP should’ve dropped by 3K across the board. I wouldn’t pay for additional light signatures, but I could possibly be enticed in making the purchase in the first place if they threw those in as a bonus. 😉 15:35

3 grand seems like a lot to ask. And I doubt we're talking 3 grand of cost to Kia. As for the digital stuff, I think it's hit or miss. I absolutely do not understand why someone not 22 years old would pay for the lighting patterns. But being able to "turbo" your car seems neat.

Their resale value has always plummeted like a boulder off a skyscraper. In October of 2019 before all this mess started, I looked at a 2015 S63 coupe with 22,000 miles. It was being retailed for $74,000. That was a $230,000 car new... So if it was being retailed at that price, imagine what was given for it on a trade..

What BMW or Mercedes EVs are similar in size and features and costs $78k? None, lol. I’ve owned 5 German luxury ICE vehicles in the past 15 years, all disposable unreliable expensive junk and endless money pit. I had a BMW X5 that I paid $72k in 2013, inflation adjusted more like $90k. It was the biggest car buying mistake i’ve ever made. Endless repairs and 3 recalls. Sold it after 25k miles. Because I had all the problems after 3 years, warranty didn’t cover it. I rather take a chance on this Kia over any German EVs or ICE cars.

People got wide eyed and surprised look on their face when they said a $40,000 Tesla was too expensive for an EV…now, everyone views Tesla as the affordable option. Incredible…once the stealerships get their hands in the markups, good luck getting this KIA for less than $85-90,000! Not paying that much for a Korean vehicle, let alone any vehicle.

  • @gregkramer5588

It does such a disservice tot he the EVs when talking price not to talk TCO/total cost of ownership. 12k miles per year,, Telluride say $1800 for gas and another $150 for oil changes. The EV9 Charging at home at $0.16 per kwh and say 2.8 miles per kwh = $685. So this is an easy $1k per year savings.
Good review of a very good vehicle IMO!

Hi Greg . . . Always appreciate your well thought out responses. Here you bring up a very good point. Yes, the just the cost of energy living in a place like Colorado where energy could be that cheap, sure an advantage. However, total cost of ownership would require factoring the cost of the vehicle - including depreciation - insurance, etc.. You would also need to take into account the cost of energy in places like California and New York - where the majority of these will be sold - energy is nowhere near US$0.16/kWh. It's more than double in places like LA. Even if you take the numbers you are using, once you bring in the cost of the vehicle, one would have to drive more than 100,000 miles per year for MANY years to make up that difference with the EV.

I have no problem with electric vehicles. I have a problem with the cost and the infrastructure to charge them. I'm sure there are people that have EVs that will say I don't know what I'm talking about. I've taken road trips and never had a problem blah blah blah. Fair enough. I don't discount that. But I also read frequent stories about people who did have problems. The first charger they stopped at was broken. The second charger they stopped at had seven people waiting before then, etc etc. I can't remember the last time I pulled into a broken gas station. For the time being, I'll stick with internal combustion.
