You are not mistaken about Carey Bell. He used them in live recordings. I looked for link but I know it's out there. Great video !!

I know your playing is good so this has nothing to do with that. The pedal though sounds harsh and basically terrible to my ears

I don't know what to say... Maybe is the microphone of the camera. To my ears this effect pedal is very good...

I do know that in person and after getting uploaded onto youtube changes the tone a Lot. I did have an EH pitchfork which is pretty similar. yet it just wasnt my cup of tea. Bottom line is how you feel about any pedal :)
