- This is a reupload of an older video, but it covers how I made music similar to portal 2. Apologies for the poor audio quality and presentation.
If you ever wanted to figure out how to get that unique portal sound, then this video is for you. In this video I discuss things like the instrumentation, and sound design of Portal 2.
Timeline:
0:00 - Intro
1:25 - Instrumentation
5:07 - Application
6:21 - Song Breakdown

i remember going through every single instrument in garageband to find something similar to portal 2 ost 💀
Honestly same though lol
SAME
Lots of them sound similar using a very low octave on my midi keyboard in GarageBand (use synth leads)
As someone who is composing for three Portal 2 mods at the moment, this was incredibly useful. Thanks for making this video.
Glad to hear it! best of luck on the soundtracks, I'd love to hear them when they're finished
Which ones, I will check them out

damn, valve really thought of everything, i had that as my headcanon because it was funny to imagine the aperture facility was procedurally generating music.
Can someone tell me where I can find the full Interview of him? 😅
Sounds very interesting! :D
The final song doesn't entirely give the feel of portal 2 soundtrack, yet it has it's vibe. It sounds like something that could be used in portal 3/portal 2 remake (something like black mesa)
Yes Calamity. That's how it feels.
Well edited video with too few views…
I also really like the portal 2 OST, and have failed to really find anything like it. Then again, i dont really know as much about modern music, so a decent amount of my more modern music come from OSTs. They make for a good listen when I’m doing something else, as longer and more complex music like a fugue would usually be too distracting for me with all those voices.
Thanks! some of the similar suggestions I've heard are artists like Aphex Twin, BT and Authechre, but they really don't come all that close, Portal 2 does have a strong IDM influence, but that's not all it is. The Portal 2 soundtrack just has a unique sound of it's own.
The only one's I've found came from people basically making Portal mods, like Harry101uk. Like the soundtracks for Mel, Tag, Tier 3, etc
awesome, the mood of the final song feels as if Kelly Bailey had written portal 2 soundtrack, and I like it even more
If I ever make my own game, I really want the music to be like portal 2's.
love this.Mike Moresby is a genius
BRO you are so underrated, this is top tier editing and explanation i couldnt find anywhere
that's a pretty good insight and deconstruction of the portal 2 OST style.
always loved the vibe and really wanted to try to take some stuff from that to my music.
have a good one
I Loved the Editing and your way of explaining stuff, keep up the good work!
This video is awesome and more people need to see this.
Worth noting that the electronic synth primarily used in P2 tracks is the Super Sync Lead preset from Native Instruments Pro 53, as revealed by Morasky in a Plogue interview.
How will I remake that preset into my synth so I cannot purchase the synth that it has?
@@l.c.habibi2339 You can find the Pro-53 plugin online for free if you know where to look
I think that the final song fits more as a credit music as it is more melodic than the randomness of most of the portal 2 music, still very cool though
extremely underrated! thx for the video, always wanted to make music like that)
No problem! Hope it helps!
Please make a full version of this song )
I think for your final song, the lead synth absolutely pulled it all together. It very perfectly encapsulated what is so great about the P2 soundtrack
IVEB EEN LOOKING FOR A VIDEO LIKE THJIS FOR WEEKS THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS
this video is incredible! loved the humor intertwined with the education! you’ve got a bright future!
Yoo, I really love the portal 2 soundtrack too and I'm constantly surprised how unique it sounds whenever I listen back through the soundtrack. It really sounds like its own genre. Thanks for the analysis, the ideas you presented give a good starting point for experimenting with stuff that sounds similar. Great video :)
It's great that such videos exist
Deserves way more attention, this video was awesome!
thanks a lot for making a video about the portal ost! it was a really nice watch.
Amazing work right there, in editing, explanation, demostration and of course the piece at the end!
I know it's not what you were going for, but your final product sounds like it was taken right out of the game Heat Signature (which also has a banger OST)
YT recommended this late to me but at a perfect time. I do tribute songs for the games i love, usually right after finishing them so i can get the feeling right. I finished portal 2 about a year and a half ago and had a project for it waiting to be finished, this video is really helpful and motivates me to finallt finish it. I really didn't know how to catch the same vibe portal 2 has but i'll try by using this vid as a guide. Thanks for reminding us what a beautiful OST this is, subbed!
I love portal 2's songs, great video!!
I understand more about sound design. I think that was the goal. Well done.
Nice explanation
Everything is in place, really
I’ve sampled it a lot in my music
underrated af
i expected a few mentions of NI Massive and FM8 presets used in the soundtrack
nice vid
I really enjoyed this video. The editing is fantastic the text too but please buy a mic for 30 dollars it would improve it much because u have the potential of being big. Keep on with these videos tho ❤
4:10 lmao
My favorite portal 2 song is frankenturrets
I can assure you this music is what it feels to be high (joke)
Where can I find that interview with the composer?
Edit: Found it I think, a link in the description might be nice though

theres an almost fishy amount of reverb are you in a cave DO YOU NEED HELP
Oh no, he's stuck in the Aperture facilities
@@RF-Ataraxiano because then we'd hear the *p i p e s*
Great video! Just one question; is the percussion in songs like ‘The Reunion’ also made with the strategies you mentioned in the video, the chopping it up? I really love the sound and it akways sounds very similar in all songs that use it. Another example of that percussion being used is the song ‘Woke up this morning’ by Alabama 3, the remix though. Thanks in advance.
