The Police- Tour Live Set Practice from Chicago on 2/18/1984 at Universal Recording Corporation
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 окт 2015
- "The Police went into Universal Recording Corporation (studio A) in Chicago and recorded their live set.
Jeff Seitz remembers: "I recall that on a day off during the Synchronicity tour, we loaded in to a Chicago recording studio with the entire stage setup: risers, monitors and all. The idea was to capture the band's onstage performance in their prime, with minimal vocals, with the intent of adding them later. The date was 02/18/1984. Sting was not singing at performance level to save his voice. We were in the middle of the tour and had a show the night before and two back to backs coming up."
This recording is already in circulation - previously known as "Synchronicity rehearsals" - either from Scranton, PA or Lititz, PA (where The Police's sound company was located)"- Jeff Seitz, Stewart Copeland's assistant

Thanx a lot! 👍
One thing that makes this incredible is it's just the lads. No backup singers, horns... great!
Take me back to the early 80’s. I don’t want to come back present day. This just makes me tingle all over - can’t believe how great this is!
Wrapped almost brings a tear in some spots. The guitar cuts so deep. I feel like that's my childhood talking a bit through a crack in the door
I'd not listened to wrapped on this...it bloody amazing.
Good Lord is this good. No band has ever done this... before or since. The intricacy, intensity and musicianship is unmatched. Stewart is so crisp and punishing. Andy is just a beast and Sting is mutha of bass player. I love this.
Rush did
you said it
@@michaelpaul5801rush is the best, but the police were just different
Sting is definitely marking vocals. I think this really shows how incredible they were on their instruments but in particular, Andy and Stewart. Sting is killing it, very tight playing, but you realize how much of the Police was Stewart and Andy. At the time of this recording it was all about Sting, Sting was THE man and THE face of the Police. But the other two musicians were so unique and also playing their asses off.
Jason Sypher kind of makes me hate the fact that the synchronicity tour was essentially Sting’s tour with Andy and Stewart lying in the back seat. Glad they made amends in 07-08 to fix that dynamic that Sting had driven into.
The Police with out Stewart or Andy are not The Police, what made them this great was ALL THREE making and bringing their unique talent but especially their unique sounds!! You take away Andy or Stewart and you turn the increíble sounds they created together into BLAH!!!!!!!!
SV GITANA very true! You take away the heart of the machine and it stops. Andy and Stewart were a huge piece to the heart that filled the machine. When sting performs the songs on his own with his own selected backing band, it isn’t at all as powerful as it is when The Police would do it. Take the early 2000s for example, go listen to Roxanne or Message in a Bottle on stings rendition, then go to the 2007-2008 reunion shows, you can’t tell me there’s no magic and dynamic between the three of them. They know how to bring it and bring the best out of eachother. It’s phenomenal.
Their best assets were definitely each other.
so true
To think that I spent most of my teenage years air drumming to Stewart Copeland’s beat... and I am doing it now... at 52!!! and it is still such a workout!🤣
He is the engine. At 59 I’m doing it too 👍🏻
56. No drumming but I sing Stings "Moon over Bourbon Street" in an amateur jazzband. Still opens the mind for me.
Me too! I'm 56, never owned drums but used to copy Stewart's every beat by hitting cushions with two old rods from the back of a wooden chair! We were very poor but happy.
And you're right, it really is a workout. No wonder Stewart has always stayed super slim.
@@AndreasDelleske That's a beautiful song.
Best when it was just the trio. Summers is exceptional.
They were so amazing without all of the candy-ass production and background singers from that tour. You can actually hear each member at the very height of their superpowers playing balls-out rock n roll. Incredible find!
I'm a police guy but why people hated these guys is beyond me! These 3 played so well together and very intricately at that! Stewart Is my favorite drummer of all-time!! Summers was great at riffs and melodic flow, Sting a great and sometimes underrated or under appreciated bassist! Besides that a different style of songs than what was heard in their heyday.. just awesome stuff! Thanks for uploading
I have a love/hate thing with the comment section for this very reason. A lot of childish comments and hate for no reason. Some don't take them seriously because their popularity on MTV and Sting's face. Some pushed back because of their politics at the time. Some people regurgitate what others say instead of really listening and appreciating their work. Some don't get why Andy isn't masturbating on the guitar all over the play (I've actually had this conversation a few times). They don't appreciate the beauty of his sound. They're caught up on pitting the members against each other instead of being grateful for the 5 years we were given. Saying who's the real star. Like, come on. ALL OF THEM are stars. Superstar group. Many hate Sting because he felt that he had more to do with his music. That's what happens with a true artist. They don't stay in the same place. He's shy but he gets accused of being arrogant. I LOVE The Police but I refuse to be mad at him for this.
Sting is on fire playing the bass!!! The whole band are playing unbelievably well!
Just amazing. I especially love this version of King Of Pain, and how we
can hear the instruments very well. Thanks for uploading, Darren! Here

Thanks for these stamps, much appreciated!
So many hit songs
This was a very special band.
Next level stuff.
The Police were best and most original musical act of the late 70s and 1980s. Thanks for sharing.
that single stroke roll in One World is so fucking smooth like it's not real, dropped in on us from heaven
Saw this leg of the Synchronicity tour on on Feb 4 at the Syracuse Carrier Dome. Crazy bird costumes, incredible energy. Wonderful to hear this again.
A once in a lifetime thing. When these three talented musicians play together it is pure magic.
The grooves are so solid. Reminds me why I loved them so much then.
My favorite band to play along with on my drum kit. I love Copland's style and energy. Definitely a challenge to try and imitate. The Police had a special "synchronicity". Apart from the internal friction, the three of the band truly made up the musical trifecta of the 80's.
This the real Police ❤
a historic document of three geniuses! something for eternity! thanks a million!
What a bass player!!!!!!!!
Staggering that the tree of them could make such a great sound - makes you realise just how amazing Andy Summers is
Sting holds back on the vocals because it’s a rehearsal and what this does is show you how brilliant Andy and Stewart were on their instruments! What a showcase! Thanks for uploading this! I’m a big Andy Summers fan! I only wish I could play like him but its not possible, Thanks!🔥💥🎸😎
Danny B so so true, he’s honestly what got me into playing, but it simply is not possible to replicate him entirely. Such a skilled musician who brought so much life and energy into the group. Stewart too, utterly brilliant at his craft.
So tight and perfect, I
Love the way Sting play bass in here, with a Pick and a Spector Bass. Andy is the master of sounds and Stewart is a Machine.
Hear, hear! Sting + Spector = Great Combination
Not sure he wasn’t playing his jazz bass this early in the tour…
@@dags1965 This rehearsal recording took place before the 4th to last date of the THIRD and final NA leg of the world tour. Sting started playing the Spector on the 2nd date of the tour in St. Louis, MO on July 24th, 1983. He played that bass for the rest of the tour (106 out of 107 dates).
Thanks Thomas - it certainly sounds like the Spector ! I’m not often right and up I’m wrong again this time!!! Thank you!
Still AMAZING!!!
i don't mean to exagerate but andy summers is a monster!!!!!
He's the man!
arguably the most underrated guitarist in the world
dude if you played what this guy is playing they'd look at you like what are you playing are you sure you know what your doing...?! you need to understand that..he brought it out he was the first ..to add these chords no one else was doing it...maybe i'm wrong but i don't feel that that is an understatement at all...i'd never heard chords like this before summers nowhere.,..every other guy back then would have turned on the distortion and just hit an A major chord...i mean those voicings where pretty innovative. back then..and still are.
there's a lot of tricky bits in there...i mean a lot...take a song like don't stand no one else would have thought of doing what he is doing there...not even the edge he would have gone what the hell do i do here..?! ha..h.a..h..a
Andy Summers is the grandfather of that sound.
So many guitar players at that time copied him.
I would listen to this all the day.
If you listen only the first minute, you will get an impression about quality and punch of this band. It figures out everything. Awesome!
And this was just the rehearsal?!!! This is f@#$ing out of this world amazing!!
As a drummer myself, I always felt Stewart was on something to play like he did. The energy was off the charts.
lol i often wondered the same thing if he was coked up to high hell
There were rumors back around in the early 80s Sting & Stewart both danced w the devil known also as Co-Ca-AIN-a. Copeland def appeared either way to amped up or very drowsy in interviews during this tour.
Read Andy's book "One Train Later". There's a mention of "hoovering some Bolivian" before going onstage. Hey, that's what was done in those days. Still, no one ever came close to their brilliance.
coke. They've pretty much all admitted it.
Amazing musicians and there're still here thank God! Long live The Police!
Copeland doesn't miss a beat.one of the best!
No egos in this session, just three guys kickin’ it. Listen to De Doo at 23:37... listen to how that sounds, just like the Zenyatta album… Anyone who thought these guys were not a great concert band can complain to Sting, Who always wanted to rearrange their songs in concert. The Ghosts tour had so much of this rearranging that the fans pushed back. With this synchronicity tour, they sort of got back to where they were. This session is incredible because not only do we hear a really good bass player, but those fabulous bandmates are allowed to shine. Incredible talent and could’ve had three or four more incredible albums if Sting Would’ve been OK with sticking with it and letting his bandmates shine through. Oh well, I got over it a few years ago :-)
I agree 100% with everything in your excellent comment, especially regarding the "Synchronicity" tour being a return to where they were - albeit with backing singers taking on much of what Andy and Stewart did on vocals previously live. Thank for your insight.
Does not sound like album version att all lol
Too bad sting sucks now and his massive ego.
This is such a great find because of all the tour recordings from 83/84 they always had the backup singers, here its just the 3 of them, the way its supposed to be!
I think it's "supposed to be" whatever they decided it would be. Outside opinions are really irrelevant. Fanboys think they know best, geez.
@@Mr.Hardgroove "Fanboys" are what made The Police their money, and the reason why those fans were so loyal and loved their music so much is because they liked the band's sound WITHOUT backup singers. The Police were\are very talented musicians, but "fanboys" pay the bills. If people didn't buy their records/cds and don't buy concert tickets, then a musician is out of work and just sitting alone strumming a guitar and flipping hamburgers to make money.
War Horsemen There’s a reason you never heard any backup singers on their albums. Nigel Gray and Hugh Pagham knew what sounded best and it wasn’t the backup singers. Sting just brought them along because he always blew his voice out on tour and they helped thicken the vocals.
War Horsemen You assumed a lot from my comment there. All I meant by the way it’s supposed to be is they started out as a trio and notice when they reformed for the reunion it was again back to just the 3 of them.
I didn’t criticize or offer up any critiques of what they were with either the Horn section on the Ghost tour or the Synch tour w the female singers backing Sting. IMO and many others they were at their best live as a trio.
ct92404 “Flipping burgers and strumming a guitar” ouch..... very much relatable lmao
I’m obsessed with this 😭😭😭
Huge party's at my parents house listening The Police while I was a 4-5 years old kid.Still love to listen their music in my car today.
That sounds cool
The night after this was recorded I was there to see the Police in concert at the Rosemont Horizon west of Chicago. The Reflex opened for them.
Nice
Copelands master strokes on the drums is incredible especially the high hat, truly awesome 😎
OutlandishAsh ...best hi hat sound ever
At that time he disliked Sting. you know that?
Yes they were always at each others throats.
@@emg5031 Yeah and for the same reason I never liked them live, because Copeland rushes everything like he would rather be in a punk band. I love and respect his greatness, but he could use some educating in the groove dept. Maybe take a lesson from Vinnie Coliuta. In the end it is a matter of taste, and I love a groove like Sting with the great Jazz drummers later in his career.
Totally agree!! I have always said that Andy as well as Stewart MADE The Police, Sting is great but he alone didn’t make the group what they became, it was the UNIQUENESS and talent that each brought to the group that made The Police who they were.....not just the talent of Sting, he can take that and shove it up his stuck up ass as far as it will go in 🤷🏻♂️
Do bands get this good anymore? This was a f*cking PRACTICE.
Unbelievably tight, extraordinary
UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE!!!!
unmatched!
all-time-high
Wrapped Around Your Finger = celestrial music ❤❤ Every damn thing they did, actually 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is awesome, thank you!!!
Those three backing singers were the stuff of pure fantasy in those uniforms they used to wear!!
Wow. So, "One World (Not Three)" is my favorite Stewart Copeland song. Pretty much sums up everything I love about him as a drummer. To hear this raw version, along with the others, is so fucking awesome. Stewart Copeland is the reason I picked up a pair of drum sticks. Been playing for 30 years now and it's still a gift. Thanks so much for posting this.
try this: ruclips.net/video/zbddMaNEXyw/видео.html
shit yes drums on this one are great
I was always amazed that Stewart could hit his snare harder and louder with a traditional grip than most drummers could using match grip! So much power.
Stewart hits the snare so hard he broke the head while they were playing at their RNRHOF induction.
Stings Bass chops are on point 🎸 love doing air bass to this ❤
This is just fucking magic. Sync 1 is unbelievable. Why did they do the backing singers? Dont get me wrong they were alright but to hear the 3 of them like this on the Sync tour is out of this bloody world. Great again Darren... 😎
For "they" in this context read "Sting". I'm pretty sure that he was instrumental in bringing the singers in. To be fair, though, they really just did on voals what Andy and Stewart had done previously live. Thank God (and the fans) that Sting left the brass section out of proceedings on that final tour!
I saw this tour live and not close enough to notice the back up singers then, but 40th anniversary, listening to / watching as many shows as I can on you tube, the back up singers are indeed horrid. I had no idea this existed. This is pure gold here.
No backup singers and no foot synth (I think). Damn, The Police sound the best when it's just the three of them playing their own instruments.
ALSO, this is REALLY helpful as a guitar player who wants to learn the riffs to various Police songs. Thank you so much for the upload!!
They're playing along sequencer on the opener, 'Synchronicity I'.
Josh Shuman I love hearing Andy's guitar chords more out front especially on Wrapped Around Your Finger, the progression during the bridge..."devil & the deep blue sea, behind me..." such lovely notes he's playing there.
YES. Its cool but half the songs are missing stuff. This is the situation you get in to when you do too much overdubs in the studio.
No auto anything!
There is a foot synth as well but only for certain songs like “Synchronicity II”, “Message”, “Moon” and “Wrapped”
They often said that they didn’t rehearse much...BS...they rehearsed a lot and that’s why they were the best band in the 80’s.
Could listen to wrapped around your fingers for decades..
Thanks for the upload ..
rebelibya 34:15
All 3 of them absolutely 'monster' every track here. The reunion tour was a pale imitation of this here.
True....they were younger, too.
the reunion tour was phenomenal, listen to certifiable and rethink that
Fascinating stuff. Sting probably wasn't singing much here to preserve his voice for the tour. This makes an interesting contrast to the concert video released from the tour.
arrangements were the key. knew the voice would be there
This is really amazing!
Sting put the songs
Andy the finesse
Stewie the heart, he was a Police's engine......
GOD BLESS THEM!
This is priceless stuff. The timing ...
Its so good it needs an official release
Incredible musicians. Miss these guys
Michael Lomenzo Hey Michael thanks for watching the video. If your on Facebook would you mind joining a group called Sting and the Police Fan Group II? I run it
Darren Henderson done!
If there ever needed to be proof that the sum is greater than the parts, this is it right here!
I saw them in Atlantic City a few days before this!
Great album.😆😆😁I saw sting in concert some time ago.good show.thanks.
Their playing on don't stand so close is amazing
Just incredible to hear this and to be reminded yet again just how magical these 3 were together. Too bad that this was the very end of their run and that it couldn't have went on a little longer. Unfortunately Sting wanted a divorce.
This is priceless so amazing all three of them
All I can say is "Thank you for posting this!!!" It is truly amazing to hear the rehearsal...they are seriously all on fire here.
One little side note....I actually really enjoy how kind of subdued Sting is singing here. I know it's to save his voice, but the monotone way he sings "Synchronicity 1" here really has a sinister vibe going on. I kinda did it!! :-)
BluStrat22 hey Blue Strat, can you send me a request on Facebook? I have this Sting-Police group you’d be interested in joining
Darren Henderson hi Darren... just saw your reply!! Sorry... will send you a FB request!!! 😊
BluStrat22 Hey my ig is also @officialdarrenhenderson if you have ig!
This is some amazin stuff, The Police at their pinnacle of performance.
The only thing I can say, is The Police inspired me to learn how to play Guitar and later Keyboards and Bass.
I can do some tuned percussion, but the drums are sadly beyond me.
Thank's to them my life has been enriched so much. And after 38 years on practice I think I can pull off Every Breath on the Guitar.
Andy Summers is amazing…. Realy a great musician.
thank you, we can so much better hear and understand the guitar and bass parts
Wow! Some of the tightest playing I’ve ever heard from them. They were truly rockin’ here, breathing together as one tight unit. It’s wonderful to hear them without the backup singers and synths, etc. The Spector has its own sound, but I wish Sting had used a p bass on this record and tour, and dropped the chorus pedal. Then the bass tone wouldn’t sound so dated. His bass playing is really on display here since he is only marking the vocals. And I have zero criticisms of Andy and Stewart. Sick. Hearing just the trio here is that pure Police energy that excites us all. If only they could have kept their egos in check, gotten their sh*t together (Sting!) and stayed together, think of what they could have created together.
The problem's not with the bass, but the amp he was using at that time. I used to think the same thing but I've since heard a Spector like that sound really fuckin great
agree, other than I think his tone is really hip and compliments andy's tone perfectly
Eric Bailey I think it was a hip tone then. It just hasn’t aged well. That sort of tone is never used on a record now. The p bass tone is THE tone chosen by the best recording engineers all over the world, with a J bass tone #2. Those tones work on any recording, in any genre in decade after decade w/o sounding dated.
Agreed, mostly.. not an expert on tone lol. But yeah the overall summary I agree with
@@harrywatson5783 love bass! Something about a Jbass I love the sound of
wrapped around your finger exceptionnel

Sting avait tout un talent à la basse, comme tout le groupe d'ailleurs. 🤘
Oui, c'est vrai! 😊
Wow superb to hear this, especially Walking on the moon with Stewart’s drumming so clear. So tight they can afford to be loose!
These recordings put in evidence their instrumental competencies, and man... They really rock... Thanks a bunch for publishing!
as if i ever had any doubt as to their prodigious abilities !!? BRILL!!
Wrapped Around....cuts deep to the soul. Damn!
What a find... and the other commenters saying Sting jsut doig a guide vocal allowing Andy and Stewart to shine... so true. Brilliant!
When you try to sing along you understand that it is hard. And so you say to yourself sting is a fuckin’ genius. Gifted by God
Its just too goid to be true, fantastic stuff..Really big thanks for posting it,
Sting is a beast on the bass!
Amazing. Overwhelmed by beauty
This version of walking on the moon is crushing. no surprise the tape drops there, undoubtedly from being replayed so much
They were so far ahead of the game. Light years in fact. Other rock groups were frankly doing nursery rhymes compared to the The Police. Sting was drawing from a deeper well. I witnessed this when I attended the Synchronicity tour. Next level Rock.
This is cool! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Amazing! A jewel in every way! Thanks for sharing
You made my day man! Thanks you so much
que relojitos! impresionante!!!
WOOOOOWWWWWWOOOWWWW!!!!! Incredible material!!!!! This is pure gold!!! Thank you to upload this!!!
Really really really really killer. They should've canned the 3 chicas. And I've never heard them sound tighter.
Darren Henderson, one gigantic thank you for posting this. Wow!
Thank you Darren. Fantastic!
Highlights for me are "Message in a Bottle", "De Do Do Do", and the Syncronicities. The Police are peerless.
THIS IS VERY SPECIAL. THANKS FOR SHARING.
imagine this group had more of a team player as singer .... my thoughts back then and still. I remember when they aded the WhooWhooGirls to the group. For me that was the end of "The Police". I was never really happy about the singer. I have not seen any interviews, I just listened to the music and saw the Rock Palast concert in 1980. I was 17 then and 15 when I heard them the first time. It was amazing ... those drums and the interplay with the guitarist. Wow. Still gets me in my heart. - thanks for uploading. Really amazing.
Awesome 👏 sounds good 👌 everyone be safe &greetings from the Sonoran Desert 🌵HMO,Mexico
amazing!!!!!
That is really COOL// THANKS for sharing..
wow. thank you forever, what a gem
Wow, great upload, they are on fire! - really loving the improvisations on each track. Magic! - Thanks Darren.
Top of their game for sure. Thanks for posting.
this is wonderful. Stewart the machine
Absolutely phenomenal
Many thanks
