One thing I have never been able to get about Eurovision (I'm American) is why the Semi-Final and The Grand Final are exactly the same down to the camera shots and every single detail? Are they the same night? Are they the same audience? What's the point of exactly the same performance for different rounds? Also, according to this side-by-side, it's soooooo exact it's impressive! But it confuses me, like most other talent contests they change up at least little bit to try and get ahead in the votes. I'm not judging, I just don't know. Can someone explain how it works? I only just started paying attention to Eurovision last year and I always wondered "are the judges going to vote differently now on the same exact performance?"
I'm not a European and English is not my first language, so I will probably make some mistakes lol But I'm a Eurovision fan! Every year there are more than 40 countries competing. Five of them (Spain, the UK, Italy, Germany and France) always have a place in the finals because they are the biggest financial contributors to the contest. They also guarantee a spot in the finals for the previous year's winning country. The other countries must compete in 2 semifinals (10 spots each). They split it into 3 nights. Camera shots are basically the same becuase they use a program called Cuepilot, in other words, it's automated! (google it if interested, there's a video for this specific performance with cuepilot in action)!
@@ppj1115 there are 37 songs / country’s competing this year. There is a semi final that is on 2 separate days. The 3 voting for semi one and semi 2 was announced on the same videos of the lineup on Eurovision page for night one semi and night 2 semi. 10 will go through to the grand final from each semi final. The grand final will have 26 performances. 10 from each of the semifinal winners part 1 and 2 and the five that go through automatically and last years winner. @@LainaLane This is incredible. So amazing that you took time to help a complete stranger! I am very grateful that you did. I now understand things very clearly. Thank you!!
Basically, the reason there's a semi then grand final is because after the fall of the dictatorships in eastern Europe, Eurovision began allowing the eastern countries to join. Since a lot of them had similar cultures and languages, "voting blocks" began cropping up where countries like Poland and Ukraine often vote for each other, Latvia and Lithuania, etc. And because of this, western countries stopped winning so much and so they started to complain. This came to a head in 2004 when the big five (France, Germany, UK, Spain, and Italy) and the host country would automatically go to a Grand Final and then all other countries would compete in two semi finals where the top ten of each would go on to the final. The big five are pretty arbitrary with Ireland and Sweden winning 7 times (the most of any countries) each even though they're not part of the big five and Spain and Germany only winning twice despite Ukraine, Denmark, Israel, Norway, Netherlands, and Luxembourg having all won more than them. Basically, thanks to the western countries feeling like they didn't win enough, there's now a semi final and grand final. Also, not all of them are exactly the same. This year, Serbia's Sami Mi Se Spava is different from its semi final performance. Luke Black, the singer in it, thought he could do some things better. Other than that, they're mostly the same, though.
