  • Gayle Shann was working with her husband on their property 'Cantaur Park' when her glove became entangled in a drilling machine inflicting shocking injuries and nearly ripping her apart.
It would take half an hour for the nearest neighbour to arrive and a further two hours for the flying doctor to get there.
Luckily for Gayle that neighbour was a former nurse - but she was shocked by the extent of the injuries.
It's left Gayle physically dependent on her husband for almost every need. But he took it in his stride. "When we said our vows on our wedding day, we meant it."
Voted one of Australian Story's most popular episodes in 2003.

2020. They are still together, no kids, her arm is the same. She runs the books on the successful cattle ranch and does a lot with her feet. The accident happened in 2002 when she was 27, Mac 24. They look happy and still gorgeous!

As a disabled (paraplegic), former nurse, I can say that the view is DEF different when it's YOUR bottom in the bed, needing assistance for EVERYTHING you do. I'm happy with how my OWN bedside manner was as a practicing nurse and very grateful to the MANY nurses I've seen in the past 7 years as a patient. Nurses truly ARE the heart of healthcare!!!❤
ON THE OTHER HAND, my fiance left me when I became disabled. THANKFULLY. I, two years later, met my husband WHILE STILL DISABLED, and I saw in him a strength and character I've, unfortunately, have rarely seen- like in Mac Shann. If not for my husband, and my grown children and family, I'm not certain I would be here.
THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL GIFT OF "YOUR LOVE STORY"- MAC AND GAYLE SHANN!!💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

I truly wish you Michael everything your heart desires and so much more. I am also a very compassionate and accepting women , I can truly say that if the love of my life had a tragic accident , no matter what the outcome..I would 100% be like Gayle's husband and be there for better or for worst until death does us apart . I hope and pray that one day i will meet the love of my life and get married . I have always loved to see and make others happy and smile , that's always what makes me happy . Unfortunately i had a major head on car accident that put me in a coma and in the hospital and rehabilitation to learn how to walk and be independent for almost 11 months but i beat the odds of the doctors telling me that i would never be able to walk and be independent without some assistance . I have 18 pounds of titanium plates and screws in my body , both my legs have many screws and plates , my left leg from ankle to my knee (tibia ans fibula ) my right leg from my knee to hip (also both my knees were smashed) , my shoulder and collar bone has plate and screws . But i can truly say i seen my life flash before my eyes and had to be revived twice while on the operating table and put on life support and in a coma but today i can walk without assistance and i am independent for the most part . I could say to myself why did this happen to me and curl up in a ball and give up but i refuse to do that because i am alive and everything the doctors said i couldn't or wouldn't be able to do ...I CAN AND I DO IT. My only heartbreak is i had such a small family and my Dad was my only living family member that i had left living , he passed away last year, besides my daughter that has her own little family and busy life and even though we speak everyday and i have beautiful and amazing friends , I am so happy for the beautiful love that Gayle and Mac have for eachother . It would be a blessing to have such a loving and caring partner to share the good and the bad and grow old together. It is very loney without that love that i truly hunger for . I really hope that Gayle and Mac continue to have an amazing life , filled with love and beautiful memories together.

Beautiful lady and so strong. I'm so proud of your husband.....love her with all you have son. One day you will have children who can help. Do not give up your faith. I was paralyzed in right leg from a water skiing accident that torn all my muscles off my butt bone, stretched my sciatic nerve in my spine like a rubber band. 2 years I hurt, I fought, and wore a brace to be able to walk and continued my job 6 weeks after accident to care for my 3 kids alone. God never left my side. I slowly began feeling the nerves come alive. Little electrical signals zapping me. It took 2 years to regrow the sciatic nerve in my leg. Today I'm walking with no brace, my foot moves and I'm so blessed I didn't give up. Love from me to you....fight hard.

This story just confirms what I’ve always thought about Australians. They’re self-reliant and independent. They’re not afraid to take on tasks that would make others pale. They care for their neighbors. They honor their marriage commitments. And, on the whole, they’re fantastically good looking! All qualities that used to be abundant where I live in Texas, but sadly seem to be falling to the wayside. To the young couple and the others involved in this story, you have my deepest respect. Prayers for continued healing.

This was so inspiring. I have chronic pain and I know it’s nothing compared to what she deals with, but I always have such a rough time not complaining... she’s changed my whole perspective when she said that the moments where she focuses on it/grimaces that it just makes it so much worse. I usually hate when people say to ignore things because they never give any actual examples and it feels like they don’t understand what you’re going through. But after seeing her set such a beautiful example, I kind of understand. I really need to practice moving on with it as if it’s not there so that it won’t control my life. I can’t believe I haven’t realized how much my anxiety about the pain itself is just making it so much worse. Women are strong and we’ve got this, despite everything, even if we don’t have a perfect partner with us to help us through it all!

Adam Griffin cool as a cucumber. Robyn conducting battlefield triage. Cliff flying in and patching her up. The doctors who provided her care. Her husband for sticking by her no matter what. What an amazing bunch of people. Gives me faith in humanity.

There is a film called the ‘The Note Book’ my hubby & I were this film, not perfect but it was our perfect! Forty four years together this year but he died 🌹 My brave beautiful man died in 8 weeks, I’m crushed. This beautiful brave resilient gorgeous couple are ‘There Note Book’...............They are amazing & so in love & I applaud them, blessings to them & their family. In sickness & in health, if you cannot respect these vowels maybe marriage isn’t for everyone! But as he said his vowels meant everything to him, I truly wish them happiness ❤️

I'm so sorry your heart is broken Fleur. I can't begin to imagine how it must feel being without your beloved husband after forty-four years together. Yours sounds like a beautiful love story too. I know and love that movie 'The Note Book' and how special you and your husband had your very own 'Note Book.' Thank you for sharing your story Fleur. All the best to you...

I agree. Of the 14 comments here, this is the only one saying this. If it was the man injured, the comment ratio would be reversed, stating "How brave she is, how lucky this man is to have her" etc etc.
She's REALLY going to need him the day she does remember what happened.

I’ve had a difficult life health wise since I was 35. I married a wonderful man who has always treated me like a queen. 47 years of marriage in a few days. Young folks often don’t realize when they saw their marriage vows, the part about sickness, has a meaning lots of folks can’t deal with when the going gets rough. I admire this young man. I pray that his wife will be able to again do all the things she enjoys

What strength you both have. To be able to ride and do things with the horses is very healing. We call it equine therapy here, the horses can read you just like a book. We have horses, you have caused me great thought on balance and reigning with your legs. I will tell your story to my horse friends and make them think too. Somebody somewhere may have some ideas! I have seen a gal that has a special saddle that is high in the back so she can strap herself in. She does really well.
Keep up your positive attitude Gayle, you are sooo special and loved by so many people.
    God Bless You

Thank you God that you gave her the husband she really did need. If it wasn't for him she may not have survived or wanted to after her accident. I know what living with lots of pain is like & dealing with that in itself has difficulties & challenges. Challenges my own husband refused to acknowledge or support me in. Ignored it yet when he suffered a very small fraction of pain I was to be his carer & helper. But God gave me a wonderful son to help me.
It's not being able to be on a horse again that would have finished me but they can train a horse & teach her to ride again. My oldest son has cerebral palsy & is paralyzed except for one arm & hand. There's nothing he can't do . She's going to make it in spite of it all. She's still beautiful. Thank you God for giving her the husband she needed.

This is the most beautiful story I have ever heard. To give our life for another does not necessarily mean we die for them. We give our all, in so many ways, and sacrifices for the good of another. Our needs, our wants, are no longer the focus. Our strength comes from Him, and God is limitless.
