Dave Palumbo addresses the 1997 Olympia, which was won by Dorian Yates (his 6th and final Olympia title). That said, many, including Dave think there was another competitor on that stage that may have been worthy of the Sandow.

El Assassino, I saw the 1983 Mr. Olympia when I was a young teen and Sammir Bannout won when it should of been clearly Bertil Fox in my opinion. Bertil was built beyond belief in my opinion and it was not even close. Judges did not see it that way though. Bertil Fox finished 5th which was a crime. Nobody in the audience or at home could believe it. I also thought Mr. Olympia 1998 contest -Flexx Wheeler was better than Ronnie Coleman and should of won. But finished second. All the best.
Nikipedia Strength and Power fans need to consider all his vintage topics come from old Flex and MD articles. Don't compare Dave to him. Dave actually knew these guys. Trained with them. Did drugs with them. Saw them personally on stage. Even guest possed with many of them, including Ronnie Coleman. Dave has forgotten more about bodybuilding than Nikipedia will ever know.
Very true. I really like Nick...I think he's a cool kid. But yes, he tends to split off stats and such like a kid reading a Weider rag. His research is sloppy at best. Then again, in this day and age, that seems part for the course.
That's an interesting perspective on Nick's. I do enjoy Dave because he has a ton of knowledge, no question. Nick's strength and power is there so I can get my bodybuilding news and I did enjoy his bodybuilding history videos

RIP NASSER .. First IFBB PRO I met in 1999 in Lafayette Louisiana with Monica Brant. Gave me extra autographed pics for free and chatted with me for an hour knowing in 2 weeks it was my first competition, Greater Gulf States.. Such class from both athletes to show they cared about the passion I had, and I won novice Heavyweight! Thank you Dave for sharing. Extremely nice, incredible people that created an awesome memory for me to live with.
As much I admire and respect Dorian, I think Dave is spot on here, Nasser deserved that Olympia
I loved this video l. Nasser was robbed and I think he died of a broken heart. The IFBB should make him a honorary Mr. Olympia and admit they made a mistake. Political fuckers.

Even if Dorian didn't have any injuries and was at his biggest Nasser in my opinion looked way better, more asthetic midsection,bigger fuller chest and overall bigger and better developed arms. Easily the winner, asthetic mass monster.

Nasser was amazing. He was the first guy that was able to put extreme mass and shape together for a freaky, yet pleasing physique to the eye. Haney kind of did it...but I wouldn't consider Lee to be a mass monster.
It is always great to hear Nasser talk. Nasser and Lee Priest are my two favorite bodybuilders. The fun thing about having those two as your favorites is that they aren't only entertaining on the stage...but off of the stage, they are pure insanity. Insanity in a good way.

Nasser was my idol in bodybuilding when I was 16 and just started. Thank you so much Dave for sharing memories about him.
Yates back still looked far better than anyone's that year but that was the only body part.
Nasser was better that year because Yates suffered injuries and those showed.

Well unfortunately since this video was made the HD footage from the prejudging and posing routines have been uploaded, and now you can can clearly see why Dorian won, infact the only person who was robbed in 97 was Kevin Levrone.
Nasser should've won Mr Olympia in 96 and 97.96 Olympia was his best look ever but got disqualified for diuretics

Nasser - the guy that spent over 100,000 a year on "supplements" and died as a result at the age of 47....Yates was the first mass monster and El Sonbatty was the first mass user.....
yep dorian was the first mass monster,and bought a new physique to bodybuilding. dorian yates changed bodybuilding and when it came to his diets,poses and training. he did it all him self,never had a coach or a nutritionist. he studied and read lots of books,basicly did it all him self,and theres his true blood and guts video which was hardcore with heavy duty poundages. many top pro bodybuilders would watch dorian's blood and guts video before hitting the gym... it surely was the best hard core video of all time. dorian yates high intensity training at it's best.....

Dorian had one injury ravaged arm. Nasser had a crap back. Which one counts for more? Plus if people are gonna nit pick, there have been Olympia winners with bodyparts missing completely. Namely Ronnie and Dexter with no calves, Franco who was basically just a chest and back, Arnold who had no hamstrings etc etc etc.

There's no WAY Yates would ever admit to losing that Olympia to Nassar. His ego is much too big for that.
I do tend to agree that Nasser was better overall. I think the difference from their back shots was hardly close;, however, if you examine more pics and video, Dorian's back was actually bigger than ever. My best buddy was at the show and said something similar -- that is, words to the effect that Dorian was off but his back was beyond crazy.
I wonder if Nasser was marked down for loading his arms up with oil? I think it's painfully obvious, especially in his biceps. The whole shape of them changed from previous years, especially from up to and including 1995 (and before someone says otherwise, Nasser initially supersized in '95, so it ain't as if he gained so much weight from then to '97 to warrant that kind of huge arm growth).I
I also disagree with Dave inasmuch as I think Nasser looked a good bit better in '96, the year he flunked the diuretics test. He was good in '97 and perhaps a little bigger, but the aforementioned oil use and relative lack of sharpness he had in '96 ... well. You get the idea.
I think this was amazing of Dave to do. A very classy and respectful moment. The smile in his face reminiscing over the events shows he was genuinely feeling it in his heart and had no hard feelings and learned to like Nasser for who he was.
I know the reason why nasser didn't win! he had noticible synthol in the biceps I reckon he got marked down for that. Yeah dorians arms were shitty but they didn't have oil in them.

And they always show some 360p blurred photos with no quality. Let's look for hd pics of Dorian from that Olympia and it's obvious that Yates still was granite hard and noone could touch his conditioning even in his worst year. And had the best back ever. I do not even mention Nasser's obvious synthol. Hardly any controvesry in the placing.

I agree with your assessment Dave. He dominated Dorian in 1997. Nasser also looked amazing in 1996 against a very depleted Dorian who was nowhere as full, dry and grainy as he had been in previous years.

It's not better, it's desperate! Theres never been a Mr olympia winner with obvious signs of Synthol use, judges would rather a bicep torn than faked and rightly so.

I'm going to tell you the reason why Nasser didn't won in 97, BIG detail that Dave did not mention, despite other facts the main one was that the judges realized that Nasser was using SEO's (could be Synthol) on his arms (can clearly be seen in front double biceps), shoulders, etc. On the other side Dorian physique was authentic, clean of SEO's, same exact thing happened to Flex on the Olympia that Ronnie won in 98. One thing is to use steroids, GH, etc to boost your own muscle to grow and other thing is cheating by using oils or implants where you are using external substances to increase muscle size which are not muscle. When comes to professional bodybuilding that's cheating.

It should be remembered that Dorian was famous for having a dry, grainy look on stage which no one in his era could consistently replicate. Almost every pro at the time stated that you had to see him in real life to appreciate it because photography never did his physique any justice, despite some of the really good pics of him in circulation. As such, it's difficult to judge the comparisons between the two in this video but it would appear Nasser had the edge. I reckon he dialled in perfectly for this show whilst Dorian came in sub-par as a competitor riddled with injury in his mid 30s thinking about retirement.
Nasser wasn't good at posing. Especially the mandatory posing. Dorian presented himself and is posing much better.

As everyone who's knowledgeable is aware, you've GOT to be there with a judge's view to really be sure, pictures, videos etc only tell you X%. It may well have been Nasser's day in reality. That said though, pretty much every multi Olympia winner has been given a gift OR 2......

Another comparision based on 360p photo shots. Show Dorian in full hd from that year and one thing becomes obvious. Nasser was baloon like compared to granite muscles od Yates.
Nah! The only person who was robbed in 97 was Shawn Ray. No torn bodyparts, no Synthol in his arms, and better symmetry and conditioning than both of them. Plus in Dorians defense at least he didn't try to cover his torn biceps by faking them with oil, if I was a judge I would frown heavily on faking muscle too, so maybe thsts why Nasser didn't do as well as you guys think he should have done.
I used to believe the Nasser hype, but Nasser never had an Olympian quality back. Dorian was never known for his arms, so I think detrimental effect the tears had were overstated. I watched a comparison of the two physiques in 97’’ and I’d still give the Sandow to Dorian at his worse.

The Mr.Olympia committee doesn't place the titles on guys that were 99lbs weaklings . In other words if you take crate loads of steroids and become a mass monster it doesn't guarantee a Mr.Olympia title. You got to win a lot of shows for a least 5 years if you're a nobody. You got to prove your legit for 5 years. Otherwise your just another guy taking crate loads of steroids.
Nassers quad sweep was better and fuller, both guys had subpar arms. Nasser had a better midsection, but turn around, and it’s lights out; dorians back was unmatched
Nassar and shawn Ray were robbed, Dorian would have been lucky to get 4th or 5the spot with this physique. The colour of his skin his all his weaknesses, what a load of crock shit.
