The brightness of color also indicates to them which babies need the food the most when they come to feed them. Cuckoos and other nest parasite birds will lay their eggs in the nests of birds like this and when the cuckoo chick hatches it pushes all the real babies out of the nest, so the weirder their real children look, the harder it is for a cuckoo to imitate and fool the parents into raising a stranger.
