ENDANGERED TURTLES LAY EGGS IN OUR BACKYARD!

  • Endangered turtles are laying eggs right in our backyard inside the expansive habitats we’ve built for them! It’s that time of year again which means sleepless nights and a lot of worry as we make sure we find the precious nests of eggs our hardworking mother turtles leave behind. Eggs left in the ground are a major target for predatory animals so it’s all up to us to find them and safely remove them for artificial incubation!

Northern wood turtles are very common here in west Virginia where I live. But to be fair I live in a area that is rather remote & protected land. They really like the rocky streams around here & what impressed me the most besides their awesome colors is they are really cold tolerant. I have seen them basking & moving around foraging for food in late January

I had a teachable moment with my son yesterday. There was a turtle in the middle of the road and he wanted to save it. I told him to simply move it to the side of the road but facing the direction it was traveling! He did and was really excited.

Congratulations on your new eggs! I can’t wait to see them hatch! what do you do with all of the babies? You said that these are both endangered turtles, so do you kind of swap the babies with other licensed facilities for breeding or do they ever get released into the wild to try and increase the population there?

Just curious about the wood turtle eggs... I noticed in the shot where you placed the last egg that one of the eggs has a dent (timestamp 16:16 - top row, 2nd from right). Is that normal and will that egg develop? I thought it might possibly be because it was laid on top of another egg and the pressure made that dent, but that's just a guess.
