Fantastic video. In fact, you introduce to the most common failures of the VVT phaser. Invaluable information. This is the most complete information I've found on internet about how VVT works and most important, the most common fails and why, from the beginning to the end. As student, you've got the point of view for transmitting knowledge, so I advance you'll have a nice professional career. Thanks.

This is excellent. Thank you for an easy to understand explanation of VVT. I did not have a clue. Now I understand the operation. Good job.

Good job explaining the system. Direct and to the point. Not a lot of BS like some videos.

Great job! The only one ever to mention the spring role, actually I dissembled my VCT sprocket and didn't know which direction to tension the spring.

Other than metal clogging the OCV screens, poor oil maintenance building up sludge will do the same thing, sometimes the screens break apart and clog up the oil return side galley and prevent oil flow also. The locking pin hole can get worn out and beveled not allowing the pin to actually lock into place. To visually monitor a slipping problem and not being able to lock down, depending on the valve cover design it may also be noticed that the chain is driving the gear at a constant rate while the cam is lagging behind until the guts of the VVT are forced along with the inner guts being pushed by the outer housing, it's nice to watch this action in slow motion on a video recording. The added pressure of the valve springs is forcing the camshaft to lag behind during a lifting action and more force is needed to push the cam along later in time. Another very nice presentation.

I have a 2007 corolla. it started running rough, dying out with low idle. no codes showed. by chance, I removed the VVT solenoid and cleaned with brake cleaner. reinstalled, and running smooth again.

I have 2012 suabru forester with FB25 engine.
    Over 300000 km on it.
The engine sometimes stalls after HWY speed . And then its crank and no start but after 1 hour its start again no issues . Not fault code no check engine light.
I have that happened to me couple of times. I held a starting fluid . Try that once didnt work. I can confirm that I have ignition spark . It sounds like no engine compression . So my main suspect is my VVT phaser . Is Im on the right path for finding the problem ? Thank you for the amazing informative video
