- Shōgun reviewed by Samatha Nelson on FX/Hulu.
Shōgun is television at its best, using its budget to create a gorgeous, immersive world but never letting spectacle detract from its emphasis on complex character arcs. The performances are compelling, aided by writing that flows from crude humor to poetic drama in a way that brings depth to protagonists and even minor characters. The series seamlessly blends intrigue, humor, romance and action in a beautifully executed limited series that keeps delivering surprises until its perfect ending.

The scene where John draws the map and all is revealed, Ooff.. Very well directed.
My favorite scene so far!
Loved it.
Absolute banger of a show. The ending of episode 2 locked me in.
just the look of it, its a movie quality turned into a series.
The duration also about 1 hour, long enough compared to others show
the crazy thing is usually that only applies to the first episode because they want to impress you and keep you watching, but episode 2 was brilliant looking too, and the plot just got more interesting. I'm so happy this show exists.
@@jaycollins2036 the show really only gets better and better with each episode
I'm convinced Toranaga IS a samurai and this is just another day in his life. 😂
Tuesday is officially the most important night of the week now.
Don’t expect an action packed samurai battling opening to the show. It doesn’t need that anyway, the scenery, acting, script, and the intense feel of how everything slowly unravels makes this an epic watch
You won't get tremendous action with this show. This show is focusing on the politics of the time. But they did spend a small fortune on Japanese movement specialist to train the young Japanese actors to move and walk in right way when in their costumes. They worked hard to get look and feel right of the time as well.
@@Madame702and i’m here for it. About time movies and series started going back into drama and well written stories rather than mindless fighting in every episode.

Preliminary knowledge to make you enjoy this drama a little more ↓.
This drama depicts the aftermath of the most powerful samurai in Japanese history, the demon king Oda Nobunaga, who was betrayed and killed by his subordinates, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Taikoo), Nobunaga's most loyal retainer, who ruled Japan for a short period after Nobunaga's death.
Most of the samurai of this period were retainers of Nobunaga and Hideyoshi, former comrades fighting each other to become shogun, a position that neither Nobunaga nor Hideyoshi was able to achieve.
Whoever won this battle became the Shogun who brought about the 250 years of peace that caused Japan to flourish as we know it today.
Wrong...Oda Killed by Akechi...Toyotomi took revenge and take over the reign..
And Iasu Takugawa won other clans after death of Hideyoshi
These are fictitional characters based on the actual people who lived
Peace is a strange way to explain a brutal military dictatorship

Once in a while a trailer comes along and you can already tell without a doubt that it will be an amazing show.
This show lives up to the hype. An instant classic - and we’re just two episodes in.

The living legend himself. Bet he has some samurai genes in there somewhere from his family ancestors.
Blackthorn is not a pirate (2:30). He is a privateer. Very different. He has a Letter of Marque from Queen Elizabeth authorising him to attack ships belonging to England's enemies (at this time principally Spain). He's a type of naval mercenary, employed at a time when England was struggling and the Royal Navy was weak, but not a pirate.
a legalized pirate
@@jorgehenriq No. Pirates attacked any ship they thought would profit them regardless of its flag. Blackthorn was only authorised to attack Spanish and Portuguese ships. There is nothing in either book or show to suggest he ever did otherwise.
@@TheRealPotoroo If he is a privateer he is essentially a state-sanctioned pirate, from the perspective of anyone but England. You're just arguing semantics.
@@vladutzuliSemantics matter. He is NOT a pirate. Being a privateer was honorable. Being a pirate was and is not.

Literally just visited Japan to see that castle
Is it the real castle is same with the show?
@@AlFirousyes it is. it was restored but pretty much looks the same minus the highrise buildings in the background 😆
@@JK-rj7ig Actually no they're not the same castle, at all. The castle in 1600 was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the Taiko) and was in black lacquered wood. Tokugawa Ieyasu (the Shogun) destroyed that castle in 1615. It was later rebuilt in 1620 but in Tokugawa style which is all in white. That castle was also destroyed later. What you visited is the 1930 construction which isn't really architecturally authentic, as it combined both black Toyotomi as well as white Tokugawa elements.
Cant wait for episode 3
It has the Ring of Power visuals combined with earlier GoT's story and plots. 10/10 indeed.
WOW LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS... looking forward to gameplay footage~

1:15 brink of civil war? Homie that was near the end of the singoku judei, we been at civil war for bout a century by that point.
yeah this made me roll my eyes aw
jidai;)
Some history textbooks indicate the rise to power of the Taiko (Toyotomi Hideyoshi) as the end of Sengoku Jidai because the Taiko already has a strong lock on power. It was just unfortunate the Taiko had to die so early and the peace had to be broken.
@@alesh2275 true, but we’re talking less than a full generation by that point. It would make more sense to say something along the lines of: “threatening to plunge the country back into civil war” or “beak the fledgling peace”.
I’m looking forward to seeing this. Heard it’s the best political & military show since the first seasons on Game of Thrones.
Pacing felt too fast as opposed to what happens in the book. By the end of ep 2 Blackthornes already been to Osaka castle, imprisoned, freed and almost killed when we should still be at Anjiro
And he spent quite a bit of time in the jail learning to speak Japanese.
Have to watch it still, waiting for the entire show to be available. Did they already do the part on the boat with the duck? :P
