- As Stephanie stares down at her son she remembers her night at the lake with Massimo and realizes she must accept that Massimo, not Eric, is Ridge’s father. Eric worries that Massimo may become an issue for them, but Stephanie assures her husband she loves him and everything they have built together. Sally assumes Stephanie blames Massimo for Ridge’s accident after hearing that she threw Massimo out of the hospital, but Massimo believes something far more disturbing is going on. Sally and Massimo ponder what Stephanie could have meant when she said to the doctor that nobody can ever find out. Deacon tells Amber that because he truly cares about Bridget’s future he’s going to ask her for a divorce. Amber thinks Deacon is trying to get back at her for getting pregnant, but Deacon says it was Brooke who made him realize that he’s not doing right by Bridget. When Deacon informs Brooke they will never see each other after he breaks things off with Bridget, their passion explodes as they move to the sofa for a final farewell.

I just rewatched the episode where they announced the results of Bridget's paternity test and it proves conclusively that Massimo could NOT be Ridge's father and that this is just a retcon. When she was announcing the results, Dr Tracy Peters said that Ridge and Eric had similar genes and that they had to look closer to find a genetic marker that was present in one man and not the other. She said they tried to rule it out by looking for markers in Stephanie's sample (because if Bridget had Stephanie's traits, the she would have to be Ridge's daughter) but when they didn't find any, they had to look closer at Eric and Ridge's. She even said that Eric and Ridge had similar genes because they're father and son and that "Ridge has genes from both Stephanie and Eric."
Let me be clear: this is not about how paternity tests were actually conducted in real life back then or whether the show even understood the science. This is a soap and they can fudge Science just as much as they do Law. But they make a point of dressing up explanations in language that sounds "legal-ish" and "science-ish" to make it the world the characters inhabit seem more realistic. The reason Tracy went through that explanation was to make the test seem real to the viewers and the characters. And the reason she made those statements about Eric and Ridge having similar genes is because the show was operating from a basic truth that Eric was Ridge's biological father. The scene of Bridget's paternity test makes it clear. Ridge was Eric's biological son until 2001 when Brad rewrote it.

Thank you! I was thinking about that paternity test episode but couldn't find it. Also in addition to what you said, Brad Bell himself said in interviews that it was a rewrite. He said he came up with the idea later because he thought it would be a good storyline and it would give Ronn Moss and John McCook big scenes to play.
I want to like this post so hard that, like Brooke, I automatically get pregnant with its baby.
I also want to copy and paste it in every upcoming episode in the Massimo storyline.

As trifling as they are, Brooke and Deacon do have good chemistry together! But still wrong!
Just another reminder: yet again, we have Brooke getting it on with Deacon when *Deacon has not yet told Bridget he wants a divorce, and they are not even separated*. While almost everyone else in the family seems to be actively arranging or at least aware of Bridget’s alleged impending divorce, at this time, Bridget thinks she is happily married. Making this disgusting liaison inexcusable on *any* level.
This Stephanie retcon is just so awful on every level. I wrote somewhat extensively before about this so I won’t repeat everything here, but in a nutshell, this completely goes against everything that the character of Stephanie stood for on any level. There were other ways to have her take morally questionable actions without trying to make her Brooke’s equal (or worse). Stephanie was many things, but not a hypocrite. And thank you to @Nick for demonstrating with the receipts how, according to B&B’s own canon, this would have been literally impossible.

What's so maddening too is that Brad did all of this - ruined the history of the show and destroyed his father's story structure - only to eventually lose interest in the character and Massimo disappears after a few years. This happens often with Brad. He'll bring on new actors (usually poached from other soaps) and make them suddenly the most important character on the show but they don't last so their only permanent legacy is upending the show and ruining the main characters. This happens with James, Deacon, Massimo, and eventually Nick & Jackie.

And there are still some who claim that Stephanie knew from the start that Ridge wasn't Eric's son and that she just took advantage of the pregnancy to get Eric away from Beth. Very impressive to see that Stephanie had actually completely suppressed the idea that Massimo would have been a possibility. Apart from that, the story is once again pretty unbelievable, like Taylor's egg mix-up later on. You really don't have to understand the reasons for some of Bell's work

Yeah, B&B has always been kinda crazy. Brooke and Deacon seem to change their mind regularly. But yes, Bridget deserves better than these two and the way they care for Bridget.
